Can you hire a bodyguard in Mexico?

Yes, through Mexican security companies authorised under the Federal Private Security Law. Algoz plans the detail, selects the officer and the driver from providers tested on real engagements, and answers for the stay through one contact. A foreign officer cannot work or carry here, and we do not pretend otherwise.

Mexico is a map, not a mood: the risk changes by state, by highway and by hour. Send the cities and the dates for a written proposal, with no obligation.

  • Officers from authorised Mexican companies, registered, vetted and under NDA
  • A security driver and a vetted vehicle for every movement, never a taxi hailed on the street
  • Arrivals met inside the terminal or at the FBO, from Toluca and Cancún to Los Cabos
  • Every road leg read against the advisories, and replaced by a flight where that is wiser
  • Unarmed and low profile as standard; armed cover only through a licensed Mexican company
  • One contact in English or Spanish, from the capital to the coasts and onward
Straight Answers

Hiring a bodyguard in Mexico: the questions people ask first.

Legality

Is it legal to hire a bodyguard in Mexico?

Yes, as a licensed activity under the Federal Private Security Law: federal authorisation for work across states, the state registry for work inside one. The provider must be Mexican. A foreign officer cannot work a detail or carry a weapon here.

Cost

What a bodyguard costs in Mexico

From USD 750 per day for one officer on twelve-hour cover. Everything else is quoted as its own line, one figure per line, confirmed before you pay.

Speed

How much notice we need

We ask for at least seven days. Under 48 hours carries an urgency fee and is not guaranteed. Grand Prix week and Christmas on the coasts book out far earlier.

Weapons

Armed or unarmed

Armed protection exists in Mexico only through Mexican security companies holding a collective firearms licence from the defence ministry. It needs a minimum 30-day lead time for authorisation, may be refused, and for most visits a low-profile, well-driven detail is the better answer.

Coverage

Where we cover

The capital and the business cities, both coasts and the colonial interior, listed by destination below. Onward to the United States and South America under one brief.

Language

Who your officer is

Vetted Mexican officers, registered under Mexican authorisation, working in Spanish and English, with female officers and further languages on request. Every one signs an NDA before your name is shared.

What We Provide

Bodyguard services in Mexico.

Officers

Authorised Mexican officers

Officers from registered companies who read as an assistant rather than a guard: at the arrival, at the table, at the hotel door, and absent where they are not needed.

Driving

Security drivers

The most valuable purchase in Mexico: a trained driver who knows the alternates, the side entrance, the Hoy No Circula plate days and when not to stop. See executive transportation.

Vehicles

Armoured or soft-skin

Armoured saloons and SUVs from registered providers, specified to the route rather than by habit, or a soft-skin car when discretion matters more.

Aviation

Airports and FBOs

The meet inside the terminal or on the apron, the luggage counted, the car on the kerb. See private jet charter.

Families

Families and villas

Female officers where the family prefers them, a plan for the children, the villa in Pedregal or Punta Mita walked before you arrive.

Events

Grand Prix, art week, festivals

Advance work at the Autódromo, Centro Banamex and the festival grounds, the car held where it can reach you. See event security.

Three Mexicos: the capital, the coasts and the colonial interior

A private visitor meets three countries, and each sets a different brief. The first is the capital and the business cities: Polanco, Reforma, Santa Fe and Lomas in Mexico City, San Pedro Garza García in Monterrey, one of the wealthiest municipalities in Mexico, and Andares in Zapopan outside Guadalajara. There the protection is the car and the route. The second is the coasts, from the Cancún Hotel Zone, Mayakoba and Tulum to the Los Cabos corridor and Punta Mita, where the work is the arrival and the evening. The third is the colonial interior of San Miguel de Allende, Mérida and Oaxaca, where it is festivals, crowds and the road in.

Arriving: Mexico City, Toluca and the coastal gateways

Mexico City International admits private flights only by authorisation. Business jets use Toluca, about 30 km west of Santa Fe at roughly 2,600 m, with Universal Aviation, Jetex and ICCS on the field, or the general aviation building at Felipe Ángeles, north of the city. Cancún’s FBO sits south of the passenger terminals, with every bag inspected at customs and parking tight from December to April. Tulum’s FBO serves general aviation only, from 07h00 to 19h00. Los Cabos has its own general aviation terminal, Puerto Vallarta the Aerotron FBO, Monterrey the Del Norte airport. Wherever you land, the officer is inside, the vetted car is on the kerb, and the first route has an alternate.

Between cities and beyond the border

Most itineraries cover several cities, and we plan them as one brief. Mexico City to Monterrey or Guadalajara is a flight. Cancún to Mérida is about 300 km on the 180D toll road in daylight, or the Tren Maya, completed in December 2024. Guadalajara to Puerto Vallarta is about 310 km, nearly four hours by autopista, and often replaced by a flight, and San Miguel de Allende is 80 minutes from Querétaro airport. Beyond Mexico, the same contact continues to Miami, Los Angeles, Bogotá and São Paulo, and a yacht off Los Cabos gets an officer on the tender and at the quay.

The risk picture, state by state and leg by leg

The current US State Department advisory places Mexico City, Quintana Roo, Baja California Sur, Nuevo León and Oaxaca at Level 2, Yucatán and Campeche at Level 1, Jalisco and Guanajuato at Level 3, and six states at Level 4, which we route around. The British FCDO advises against all but essential travel to listed states and municipalities, and Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, San Miguel de Allende and Monterrey are not on its list. For a visitor the real risks are movement risks: express kidnapping, a hailed taxi, a visible watch, a predictable routine. The map can change in a day. On 22 February 2026 a security operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco, was followed by roadblocks in about a dozen states and cancelled flights. So every road leg is assessed, and sometimes the answer is a flight or a day’s delay.

The calendar: art week to the Day of the Dead

The Mexican year has fixed peaks, and the officers who know them are reserved early. Zona Maco runs from 3 to 7 February 2027 at Centro Banamex, and Tecate Pa’l Norte fills Monterrey from 26 to 28 March. Oaxaca holds the Guelaguetza on the two Mondays after 16 July. In Cabo San Lucas, Bisbee’s Black & Blue runs from 26 to 30 October 2027. The Mexico City Grand Prix follows from 29 to 31 October, then the Day of the Dead on 1 and 2 November, with its Grand Parade traditionally along Reforma to the Zócalo. FIL Guadalajara, the largest Spanish-language publishing fair in the world, closes the year.

How a Mexican detail is actually run

It starts with the diary, never with a headcount. We read the dates, the venues, the profile and the states, then propose the smallest team that covers the brief, and often that is a security driver alone. The hotel is briefed before the officer is visible, and a taxi, if one is ever needed, is a sitio from an authorised rank. Every officer is registered, signs an NDA and is briefed to the Algoz standard. If the brief does not need an officer, we say so.

What a bodyguard costs
Mexico by Season

When protection in Mexico earns its day.

3 to 7 February 2027

Zona Maco and art week

Collectors fill Polanco and Centro Banamex for the fair and its openings, and the evenings run late.

26 to 28 March 2027

Pa’l Norte in Monterrey

Monterrey’s major music festival, venue to be confirmed, historically Parque Fundidora. The car held off the crowd, the exit planned first.

July and August

Guelaguetza and the summer peak

The Guelaguetza in Oaxaca, the East Cape Offshore from 3 to 7 August 2027, and the second high season on the coasts.

Late October to 2 November

The busiest fortnight

The Los Cabos Offshore from 19 to 23 October 2027, Bisbee’s, the Grand Prix and the Day of the Dead. These weeks book out far earlier.

15 May to 30 November

Hurricanes and rain

The Pacific season opens on 15 May, the Atlantic on 1 June; both close on 30 November. Flights, coast roads and the capital’s underpasses change the plan.

How It Works

The brief, the map, the car, the stay.

Step 01

The brief, under NDA

Dates, cities, profile, hotels or villas, events and how you arrive, held under NDA from the first message.

Step 02

The map

Every state and road leg read against the US, British and Canadian advisories.

Step 03

The provider

An authorised Mexican company for each state, its registration checked. You see the officer’s profile before deployment.

Step 04

The car and the arrival

The driver, the vehicle, the meet at the terminal or the FBO, and the first route with its alternate.

Step 05

The stay

Present where the risk sits: the arrival, the evening, the toll road between cities. Invisible everywhere else.

Step 06

One contact

One coordinator for officers, drivers, flights and the concierge side, in English or Spanish, until you leave Mexico.

Excellence, Discreetly Delivered

“In Mexico the protection is mostly in the car and the route. We read the country state by state and hour by hour, never by its reputation.”

What protection in Mexico costs.

Close protection in Mexico starts from USD 750 per day for one officer on twelve-hour cover, the published base for the country. A security driver, an armoured vehicle, flights, hotels and any yacht are each quoted as its own line, one figure per line, confirmed before you pay. Multi-officer details sit above the base and are quoted to the brief, with the final rate shaped by the profile and the cities.

Armed cover sits above the base, needs a minimum 30-day lead time for authorisation, may be refused and is rarely the better answer. Further reading: what a bodyguard costs, our close protection pricing guide and how a security driver works.

Mexican Legal Framework

Why protection in Mexico must be licensed.

Private security in Mexico is governed by the Federal Private Security Law of 2006. A company working in two or more states needs a one-year federal authorisation from the Secretaría de Seguridad y Protección Ciudadana; inside one state, the state authorises it. The provider must be Mexican and every officer registered. In September 2026 the regulator publicly reprimanded a Mexico City company for using unregistered staff.

Weapons fall under the Federal Firearms and Explosives Law: a company may be armed only under a collective licence from the Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional, on the security ministry’s opinion of how many weapons and of what type. A foreign bodyguard cannot work or carry here, and Algoz coordinates only inside this framework. See how our close protection works and bodyguard laws by country.

When to Hire

The moments that call for protection in Mexico.

Business travel is the quietest category: board visits and negotiations in Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara, where the value is the driver and the route. Family holidays on the coasts, festival weeks and relocations each set their own brief.

Late October is the peak, when Bisbee’s, the Grand Prix and the Day of the Dead fall within one fortnight. For a short stay between one hotel and one office, a security driver alone is often the honest answer.

Good to Know

Bodyguard in Mexico: frequently asked questions

How much does a bodyguard cost in Mexico?

From USD 750 per day for one officer on twelve-hour cover, the published base for Mexico. A security driver, an armoured vehicle, flights and hotels are each quoted as its own line, one figure per line, confirmed before you pay. Armed cover and larger details sit above the base and are quoted to the brief.

Is it legal to hire a bodyguard in Mexico, and can I bring my own officer from abroad?

Yes, through authorised Mexican companies. The Federal Private Security Law requires federal authorisation for work in two or more states and state authorisation inside one; the provider must be Mexican and its officers registered. A foreign officer cannot work a detail or carry a weapon in Mexico. Your own head of security can travel as part of your party, while licensed Mexican officers do the protective work.

Can my bodyguard be armed in Mexico?

Only through a Mexican security company holding a collective firearms licence from the Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional, granted on the security ministry's opinion of how many weapons and of what type. It needs a minimum 30-day lead time for authorisation and may be refused. For most visits a low-profile, well-driven detail is the better answer.

How much notice do you need to arrange a bodyguard in Mexico?

We ask for at least seven days to match the officers, check each provider and plan the routes. Shorter notice is looked at case by case; under 48 hours carries an urgency fee and is not guaranteed. Grand Prix week, the Day of the Dead and Christmas on the coasts book out far earlier.

Is Mexico safe for a private visitor, and which states do you route around?

For most visitors, in the places they actually go, yes, with discipline. The current US advisory puts six states at Level 4: Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas and Zacatecas. We route around those, and where we cannot deliver to our own standard, we decline.

Do I need an armoured car in Mexico, or is a security driver enough?

Often a vetted security driver in a soft-skin car is the proportionate answer, and we will say so. Armour makes sense for a recognisable principal, long road legs, repeated routines and residents. It is specified to the brief and quoted as its own line, because an armoured car driven badly protects nobody.

What is express kidnapping, and how do you prevent it?

A short abduction by a small opportunistic group in a large city, to force cash withdrawals or card payments. It often begins with an unvetted car or a taxi hailed on the street, so prevention is a vetted driver and vehicle for every movement, varied routines and no improvised transport at night. Virtual kidnapping, an extortion call claiming a relative has been taken, is defeated by a briefed family.

Can you meet us at the airport, including the private aviation terminals at Toluca, Cancún and Los Cabos?

Yes. Mexico City International admits private flights only by authorisation, so business jets use Toluca or Felipe Ángeles. Cancún has an FBO south of the passenger terminals, Tulum an FBO for general aviation only and Los Cabos its own general aviation terminal. The officer meets you inside and the vetted car waits on the kerb.

Should we drive or fly between Mexican cities?

Usually fly. Canada describes road safety as poor and advises against travelling after dark; the FCDO advises toll roads and warns of unofficial roadblocks in remote areas. Where a drive makes sense, such as Cancún to Mérida, it runs on the toll roads, in daylight, with a security driver, and every leg is checked close to the day.

Do you cover Cancún, Tulum and the Riviera Maya, and is it safe after dark?

Yes, from the Hotel Zone and Mayakoba to Tulum. The FCDO advises particular caution after dark in downtown Cancún, Tulum and Playa del Carmen, and reports that several shootings since 2021 have affected tourists, though gangs have not targeted them. So the evening in town has the driver waiting and an officer beside you, never a street taxi at two in the morning.

Do you cover Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara and Monterrey?

Yes. Los Cabos is calm for most visitors, though the FCDO notes drug-related crime there. Puerto Vallarta and Punta Mita are judged on their own merits rather than by Jalisco's Level 3 rating. Guadalajara and Monterrey are business briefs, run from Andares and San Pedro Garza García.

Do you cover San Miguel de Allende, Mérida and Oaxaca?

Yes. San Miguel de Allende is 80 minutes from Querétaro airport. Guanajuato is Level 3 in the US advisory, but the town is not among the municipalities the FCDO advises against. Yucatán is one of only two Level 1 states, and Mérida is widely reported as one of Mexico's safest cities. Oaxaca peaks with the Guelaguetza and the Day of the Dead.

When is the best time to visit Mexico with protection, and which weeks book out early?

The coasts peak from December to April and in July and August; hurricane season runs from 15 May on the Pacific and 1 June on the Atlantic to 30 November. The busiest fortnight runs from Bisbee's Black & Blue, 26 to 30 October 2027, through the Grand Prix, 29 to 31 October 2027, to the Day of the Dead on 1 and 2 November.

Do you provide female officers, English-speaking officers and protection for families with children in Mexico?

Yes. Officers and drivers for international principals work in Spanish and English, with other languages on notice. Female officers can be requested, subject to availability, for families, for women travelling alone and for anyone who prefers them, and a family plan covers the airport, the beach club and the evening.

Why use Algoz rather than contracting a Mexican security company directly?

Because from abroad there is no reliable way to tell a properly authorised, well-run firm from one that only claims to be. Algoz has done that filtering on real engagements, matches an authorised provider to each state, places every officer under NDA and supervises the detail, with one accountable contact.

I am an executive assistant or family office booking for a principal in Mexico. How does it work?

You brief once and keep one contact. You receive a written proposal and one number for changes; the officer and driver profiles, the vehicle and the routes follow once the engagement is confirmed and under NDA. Nothing about the principal is shared with a provider beyond what the work requires.

A Trusted Single Point of Contact

Close protection, handled by one accountable team in Mexico.

Principals and the people who plan for them - executive assistants, personal assistants, chiefs of staff, family offices and the agencies and producers who book on a client’s behalf - brief Algoz once and we coordinate the rest. We speak the operational language of security leads and the discretion language of private offices, so nothing is lost in translation between the two.

Every detail in Mexico is delivered by accredited, locally licensed close protection officers (male and female), armoured transport where the threat picture warrants it, and 24/7 operations - coordinated and quality-controlled by Algoz under NDA. UHNWI and HNWI principals, royal and family offices, executives, celebrities and public figures rely on Algoz as a credible, trustworthy first call.
