Hiring a bodyguard in Merida, answered.

You can hire a bodyguard in Merida, through authorised Mexican security companies. Yucatan is one of the calmer states in Mexico, and the dated figures are below. For most visits the work is heat, distance and the car. A principal’s own threat picture changes the plan, and we read that first.

Algoz is a protection house that also runs the concierge side, so the hacienda, the driver and the officer are one plan. Send the dates for a written proposal, from USD 750 per day for one officer on twelve-hour cover.

  • Officers from authorised Mexican companies, vetted and under NDA
  • Arrivals met at Merida International, its private terminal or Teya station
  • Paseo de Montejo and the Centro walked at the hours the heat allows
  • Haciendas read as working estates: staff, vendors, the rural approach
  • Chichen Itza at the opening of the gates, long roads driven in daylight
  • One contact in English or Spanish, from enquiry to departure
Straight Answers

Hiring a bodyguard in Merida: the questions people ask first.

Legality

Is it legal to hire a bodyguard in Merida?

Yes, through authorised Mexican companies only. Yucatan has its own private security law: a company needs the state’s authorisation and registration, renewed yearly, whatever federal authorisation it also holds. A foreign officer cannot work a detail or carry a firearm here.

Cost

What a bodyguard costs in Merida

From USD 750 per day for one officer on twelve-hour cover. A security driver and a vehicle are each quoted as its own line, one figure per line, confirmed before you pay.

Speed

How much notice we need

We ask for at least seven days, which is what matching the officer and walking the venues takes. Shorter notice is looked at case by case; under 48 hours carries an urgency fee and is not guaranteed.

Weapons

Armed or unarmed

Armed protection exists in Mexico only through Mexican companies holding a collective firearms licence from the defence ministry. It needs a minimum 30-day lead time for authorisation and may be refused. For most Yucatan visits a low-profile, well-driven detail is the better answer.

Coverage

Where we cover

Paseo de Montejo, the Centro and the north; the haciendas; Chichen Itza, Uxmal and the Puuc route; Progreso, Celestun, Sisal and Rio Lagartos; Izamal and Valladolid. Then Cancun, the Riviera Maya and Mexico City under the same brief.

Language

Who your officer is

Vetted Mexican officers, working in Spanish, with English-speaking and female officers on request, subject to availability.

What We Provide

Bodyguard services in Merida and Yucatan.

Officers

Authorised Mexican officers

Vetted by the house and under NDA before your name is shared. Present at the pavement and the long day out, absent at the table.

Driving

Security drivers

Yucatan is flat, straight and long, so the driver matters most: the hour to leave, the toll road over the old road, the water in the car. See executive transportation.

Aviation

Airport and private aviation

The meet at Merida International or its general aviation terminal, the luggage counted, the pre-booked vehicle waiting as the airport allows. See private jet charter.

Estates

Haciendas and residences

A working estate has its own staff, vendors and rural approach, and we read those as a plan before you arrive. See villas and property rental.

Days Out

The ruins and the coast

The day built around the gates, the shade and the drive home in daylight. A boat on the Gulf is quoted as its own line. See yacht charter.

Occasions

Weddings and families

A protected wedding at an estate, a family stay, female officers where available. See destination weddings and female travel protection.

Paseo de Montejo, the Centro and the north

Paseo de Montejo began as a French-inspired boulevard of henequen-boom mansions, the Casas Gemelas and the Palacio Canton among them, and now runs more than six kilometres north from Santa Ana, with the Monumento a la Patria on its line. Rosas & Xocolate and the Fiesta Americana stand on it. South of it the Centro turns on the Plaza Grande, the Cathedral of San Ildefonso and Calle 60, best walked early or after dark when the heat drops. The Teatro Peon Contreras remains closed after a fire, so no evening should be planned around it. The affluent districts lie to the north, around Altabrisa and Temozon Norte, with Hacienda Xcanatun further out. The protective work is modest and exact: the pavement transition, the shade, the water, the timing, and the officer inside the restaurant rather than at the door.

Arriving: Merida International, the private terminal and the Tren Maya

Merida International sits under five kilometres south-west of the centre, an ASUR airport that handled 3,939,692 passengers in 2025, with a general aviation terminal for executive aircraft. Direct flights reach Miami, Houston, Dallas, Orlando, Toronto and Calgary, several of them seasonal. None reach Europe, so a European principal connects through a US hub, Mexico City or Cancun, and we treat the connection as one movement. The authorised airport taxis are the official recommendation; ours is a planned transfer rather than a taxi queue, with the officer in the hall, the luggage counted, the vehicle waiting at arrivals as the airport allows. The Tren Maya stops at Teya, in Kanasin municipality outside the city, not in the Centro, so a vehicle is held at the station. A Cancun arrival becomes a long half day, Highway 180 to Kantunil and then the 180D toll road, in daylight and assessed leg by leg.

Beyond the city: the haciendas, the ruins and the coast

The henequen boom left haciendas across the peninsula, some restored, many in ruins. Chable Yucatan in Chochola, 45 to 50 minutes from the airport, and Hacienda Temozon Sur in Abala municipality, south of Merida, are among the estates that host families and weddings. Uxmal lies about 80 kilometres south, with Kabah, Sayil and Labna on the Puuc route. Chichen Itza is 115 kilometres east and opens at eight: driving from Merida, which is closer than Cancun or the Riviera Maya, you arrive at the opening of the gates. It drew 2.1 million visitors in 2025, nobody climbs El Castillo, and INAH keeps visitors 15 metres from it. Any special access is subject to INAH permission, never promised. Progreso is about 30 minutes north, its pier running 6.5 kilometres into the Gulf. Celestun is 95 kilometres west, Sisal 53, Izamal 72, Valladolid 170 and Rio Lagartos 230, about two and a half hours by road. Each is a daylight drive home. Onward to Cancun, Mexico City or Miami, the brief stays the same.

The risk picture, honestly: heat, distance and routine

Yucatan is the state usually cited as the safest in Mexico, and the figures carry dates. The United States rates Yucatán at Level 1, one of two Mexican states at that level. In the 2020 state table its homicide rate was 2.25 per 100,000, the lowest of 32 states. INEGI’s ENVIPE 2026 found 35.5% of residents calling their state unsafe, second lowest after Coahuila at 27.8%. Neither the FCDO nor Canada issues a regional warning for Yucatan, while Canada’s national caution for Mexico still applies. So we quote statistics, not slogans. What actually hurts people here is duller: afternoons often above 38°C before the rains, long flat roads driven at night, hurricanes between June and November. Canada warns of card fraud in street-hailed taxis, express kidnapping in large urban areas and calls to hotel rooms from people posing as relatives in distress or as officials. A principal with a personal threat profile is a different brief, and we plan for that profile, not for the state average. An armoured car is rarely the proportionate answer here, and we say so at the enquiry.

The calendar: Merida Fest, Carnival, the equinox and Hanal Pixan

January brings Merida Fest around the city’s anniversary on the sixth; the 2026 edition filled the Plaza Grande, the Cathedral and the Remate of Paseo de Montejo. February brings Carnival, at the carnival grounds south of the city, with a street parade in the centre. Around the spring equinox in March, Chichen Itza fills for the serpent shadow: more than 8,400 people came on the Friday in 2026. The shadow falls in the late afternoon and ticket sales stop at 16h00, so a protected visit is inside before then. In July and August Merida moves to the coast at Progreso. From late October into early November the Festival de las Animas takes the Centro, and its Paseo de las Animas procession from the General Cemetery has drawn more than 50,000 people and closes streets.

How a Merida detail is actually run

It starts with the diary, never with a headcount. We read the dates, the venues and the profile, and size the detail to that diary. Every officer signs an NDA and is briefed to the Algoz standard. Venues are walked before you arrive wherever access allows. An estate is read as a working place: who is on the staff list, which vendors are due, when the drive is busiest. Medical planning is a matter of knowing the route. Star Medica in Altabrisa and Faro del Mayab in Temozon Norte serve the north, Clinica de Merida sits nearer the centre, and the nearest of them is settled against each day’s movements before anyone needs it.

How close protection works
Yucatan by Season

When protection in Yucatan earns its day.

November to April

The dry months

The easiest months to move through Yucatan. Flamingos gather at Celestun from December to March.

January and February

Merida Fest and Carnival

Concerts around the anniversary on 6 January, then Carnival south of the city. We confirm 2027 dates when the organisers publish them.

March

The equinox at Chichen Itza

Thousands on one afternoon for the serpent shadow, and ticket sales stop at 16h00. A planned arrival, or a different day altogether.

April to June

The heat

Average highs of 36 to 37°C in April and May. The ruins come first and the afternoon belongs to the hotel.

June to November

Rains and hurricanes

Rain from June to October, the Atlantic and Gulf hurricane season to the end of November. The detail carries the storm plan and the way out.

Late October to early November

Hanal Pixan

Closed streets in the Centro and large crowds after dark. A route on foot, planned from its end.

How It Works

The brief, the provider, the car, the day.

Step 01

The brief, under NDA

Dates, profile, hotel or estate, the days out and how you arrive, under NDA from the first message.

Step 02

The provider

An authorised Mexican company chosen for the brief. You see the officer’s profile before deployment.

Step 03

The car and the arrival

The driver, the vehicle, the meet at the airport or at Teya, and the first route with its alternate.

Step 04

The venues

The hotel’s team briefed, the estate read as a working place, the ruins timed to the gates.

Step 05

The day

Present where the risk sits: the pavement, the crowd, the long road. Out of your way everywhere else.

Step 06

One contact

One coordinator for officers, drivers and the concierge side, until you leave Mexico.

Excellence, Discreetly Delivered

“In Yucatan the detail is mostly shade, water, timing and the car. Done properly, nobody remembers it.”

What a bodyguard costs in Merida.

Close protection in Merida starts from USD 750 per day for one officer on twelve-hour cover. A security driver, a vehicle, flights and hotels are each quoted as its own line, one figure per line, confirmed before you pay. Larger details are quoted to the brief.

Armed cover sits above the base and is quoted to the brief. It needs a minimum 30-day lead time for authorisation, may be refused and is rarely the better answer here. See what a bodyguard costs and how a security driver works.

Mexican Legal Framework

Why protection in Yucatan must be licensed.

Private security in Mexico rests on the Federal Private Security Law of 2006 and, here, on Yucatan’s own Law for the Provision of Private Security Services. Whatever federal authorisation a company holds from the Secretaría de Seguridad y Protección Ciudadana, it may not work in Yucatan without authorisation and registration from the state Secretaría de Seguridad Pública, renewed every year. Firearms fall under the Federal Firearms and Explosives Law, administered by the defence ministry: a security company may be armed only under a collective licence, after a favourable opinion from the state.

A foreign bodyguard cannot lawfully work a detail or carry a weapon here: Yucatan’s law requires every director, administrator and officer of a security company to be Mexican. Bringing a weapon into Mexico without written authorisation is a criminal offence punishable by imprisonment. Engaging unregistered individuals leaves a principal without liability cover. See how our close protection works, bodyguard laws by country and travel and destination management.

When to Hire

The moments that call for protection in Yucatan.

A hacienda wedding or family stay, with many vendors and a rural road home. A day at Chichen Itza or on the Puuc route in the heat. A Progreso cruise call. A long stay in the north of the city. The Festival de las Animas, Carnival and the equinox, when the crowd is the problem.

Business visits with onward legs to Cancun or Mexico City are the quieter category. For one hotel and a dinner on Montejo, a security driver alone may be the honest answer, and we will say so.

Good to Know

Bodyguard in Merida: frequently asked questions

How much does a bodyguard in Merida cost?

From USD 750 per day for one officer on twelve-hour cover, the published base for Mexico. Security drivers, vehicles, flights and hotels sit on separate lines of the proposal, each confirmed before you pay. Armed cover and larger details are quoted to the brief.

Is it legal to hire a bodyguard in Merida and Yucatan?

Yes, through authorised Mexican companies, under the Federal Private Security Law of 2006 and Yucatan's own private security law, which requires authorisation and registration from the state public security ministry, renewed every year. A foreign officer cannot lawfully work a detail or carry a weapon in Mexico. Ask any provider for its state registration number.

Is Merida safe, and is Yucatan really the safest state in Mexico?

By the dated measures, yes: the lowest homicide rate of 32 states in the 2020 table, and the second lowest share, after Coahuila, of residents calling their state unsafe in INEGI's ENVIPE 2026. The FCDO and Canada list no regional warning for it, though Canada's caution for Mexico as a whole covers it. Hailed taxis, card fraud and night roads remain real, and a personal threat profile is a separate brief.

Do I actually need a bodyguard in Merida, or is a security driver enough?

Perhaps not, and we will say so at the enquiry. For one hotel and a few dinners, a security driver alone may be the proportionate answer. An officer earns the day when the profile is recognisable, the crowd is large, or the itinerary runs out to the ruins and the estates.

Can my bodyguard be armed in Merida?

Only through a Mexican company holding a collective firearms licence from the defence ministry. It needs a minimum 30-day lead time for authorisation, may be refused and is quoted above the base. A foreign officer can neither work a detail nor carry a weapon in Mexico. A low-profile, well-driven detail remains the better answer for most visits here.

How quickly can you put a bodyguard in place in Merida?

We ask for at least seven days. Shorter notice is looked at case by case. Under 48 hours carries an urgency fee and is not guaranteed.

Can you meet us at Merida International Airport, including the general aviation terminal?

Yes. Merida International (MID) has a general aviation terminal for executive aircraft. The officer meets you in the hall, the luggage is counted and the vehicle waits at arrivals as the airport allows. Official advice favours the authorised airport taxis; we plan a transfer instead, so nobody stands in the queue.

Does the Tren Maya stop in Merida, and can you meet it?

Yes, at Teya station, in Kanasin municipality outside the city and not in the Centro. A vehicle is held at the station and the officer meets the train. The line also stops at Izamal, Chichen Itza and Valladolid, so it can carry a day out as well. Confirm the timetable when booking.

How far is Chichen Itza from Merida, and can you protect a visit there and at Uxmal?

Yes. Chichen Itza is 115 kilometres from Merida and opens daily from 08h00 to 17h00, with last entry at 16h00. The detail drives from Merida to arrive at the opening of the gates, ahead of the heat. Entry takes two tickets, federal and state. INAH alone decides any special access, and we never promise it. Uxmal, about 80 kilometres south, pairs with the Puuc route, and the drive home is done in daylight.

Can you cover a wedding or a family stay at a hacienda such as Chable Yucatan or Hacienda Temozon Sur?

Yes. Those two are named as venues that exist, not as partners or clients. An estate is a working place with its own staff, vendors and rural approach, so guest movement, suppliers and the last car home are planned in advance with the venue.

Do you cover Progreso, Celestun, Sisal and the Rio Lagartos flamingos?

Yes, as day movements with the drive home in daylight. Progreso is about 30 minutes north, Celestun 95 kilometres west with flamingos concentrated from December to March, and Sisal 53 kilometres out. Rio Lagartos is 230 kilometres, about two and a half hours via Tizimin, and operators there keep 500 metres from the nesting areas.

Is it safe to drive from Merida to Cancun, and should we go at night?

By day, and on the 180D toll road from Kantunil, yes. The FCDO advises toll roads and daylight where possible, and Canada advises against travelling after dark. The drive is a long half day, so we plan a daylight departure, fuel, water and the nearest hospital along the way. At night the answer is no, unless the brief genuinely requires it.

When is hurricane season in Yucatan, and when is the best time to visit Merida?

Hurricane season runs from early June to the end of November, and the rains from June to October. The dry months, about November to April, are the easiest to move around in. Afternoons before the rains are often above 38°C, so the day starts early. When a storm watch is posted, the detail already holds the way out.

Do you provide female close protection officers, and do your officers in Merida speak English?

Female officers can be requested, subject to availability, for families, women travelling alone and anyone who prefers them. English-speaking officers are also on request, and one coordinator works with you in English or Spanish throughout.

Why use Algoz rather than hiring a Mexican security company directly?

Because an authorisation tells you who is permitted, not who is good. The house chooses the provider for the brief, checks the authorisation, places every officer under NDA and supervises the detail against one standard, with one accountable contact. If nobody in the state fits the brief, we say so rather than sending a compromise.

I am an executive assistant booking for a principal in Merida. How does that work?

You brief once and keep one contact. You receive a written proposal and a single number for changes, with the officer and driver profiles once you confirm. The provider learns only what the work requires.
