Can you hire a bodyguard in Oaxaca?

Yes, through authorised Mexican security companies. A foreign officer cannot simply fly in and work a detail, and cannot carry a firearm. The United States rates Oaxaca at Level 2. We do not call it safe or dangerous: we plan first around blockades, taxis, opportunistic theft, the sea and the weather. So the protection is in the diary and the route, not in a visible guard.

Algoz is a protection house that also runs the concierge side, so the officer, the car and the tables are one plan. Send the dates for a written proposal, with no obligation.

  • Officers from authorised Mexican companies, vetted and under NDA before your name is shared
  • A security driver and a vetted vehicle for every movement, never a taxi hailed off the street
  • Road closures checked the night before, the alternate chosen and the day moved if needed
  • Arrivals met at Oaxaca, Huatulco or Puerto Escondido, luggage counted, first route planned
  • The amphitheatre exit, the cemetery gate and the palenque walked before you arrive
  • One contact in English or Spanish, across the state and onward
Straight Answers

Hiring a bodyguard in Oaxaca: the questions people ask first.

Legality

Is it legal?

Yes, through a Mexican company. Work across states needs federal authorisation under the Federal Private Security Law; a company working only inside Oaxaca answers to the state’s own private security rules. An officer who travels with you from abroad has no right to work the detail or to carry a weapon.

Cost

What it costs

From USD 750 per day for one officer on twelve-hour cover. A security driver and a vehicle are each quoted as its own line, one figure per line, confirmed before you pay. Coast legs and festival weeks sit above the base.

Speed

How much notice we need

We ask for at least seven days. Shorter notice is looked at case by case; under 48 hours carries an urgency fee and is not guaranteed. The Guelaguetza and the Day of the Dead book out far earlier.

Weapons

Armed or unarmed

Unarmed and low profile as standard. Armed protection exists only through Mexican companies holding a collective firearms licence from the defence ministry. It needs a minimum 30-day lead, may be refused, and for most visits a low-profile, well-driven detail is the better answer.

Coverage

Where we cover

Centro, Jalatlaco and Xochimilco; Monte Albán, Tule, Teotitlán, Tlacolula, Mitla, Matatlán and Hierve el Agua; Puerto Escondido, Huatulco, Zipolite and Mazunte. Then Mexico City, Los Cabos and the Riviera Maya under the same brief.

Language

Who you get

Vetted Mexican officers with police, military or federal service backgrounds, working in Spanish and English, with female officers on request, where available. A local liaison for village visits is arranged where available.

Centro, Jalatlaco and Xochimilco: the city on foot

The Historic Centre shares a 1987 UNESCO inscription with Monte Albán. The day runs along the pedestrian Macedonio Alcalá, from the Zócalo up to Santo Domingo, inaugurated in 1608, whose former convent holds the Tomb 7 treasure and the ethnobotanical garden. Levadura de Olla and Los Danzantes each hold a Michelin star. Jalatlaco and Xochimilco were villages before the city absorbed them, and Jalatlaco now sits on Mexico’s Barrios Mágicos list. Otro Oaxaca stands opposite Santo Domingo, the Quinta Real a few blocks from the centre. On foot the officer walks with you, not behind you, and the car is held where it can actually leave. The point is that you buy the rug, drink the mezcal and sit on the terrace without thinking about any of it.

Arriving: Xoxocotlán, Huatulco, Puerto Escondido and the new road

Xoxocotlán International, OAX, lies about 7 km south of the city, with direct flights from Dallas, Houston and Los Angeles, a general aviation apron and heliports. Huatulco, HUX, has a 3,000-metre runway, a general aviation terminal and the Tangolunda hotel zone about 19 km away. Puerto Escondido, PXM, keeps official hours of 07h00 to 19h00, with direct flights from Houston and Dallas. The officer waits at the terminal exit, because a private officer does not bypass immigration or screening. The luggage is counted, the vetted car is waiting, and the airport road is checked that morning. The new highway to the coast opened in 2024 and cut a drive of about seven hours to under three. We drive it in daylight and read the weather first.

Beyond the city: Monte Albán, the valley, mezcal country and the coast

Monte Albán stands about 9 km west and is best at opening. East of the city lie the Tule tree at about 9 km, the weavers of Teotitlán del Valle at 31 km, Tlacolula’s Sunday market at about 30 km and Mitla at about 44 km. Most of Mexico’s mezcal comes from this state, and Santiago Matatlán calls itself its world capital: a private tasting at a palenque, with the vehicle held. Hierve el Agua is about 70 km out and the road to it has been blocked more than once, so we confirm the site is open before each brief. The coast is a second programme: Zicatela, Carrizalillo, Hotel Escondido and Hotel Terrestre around Puerto Escondido, with the Casa Wabi foundation on the same shore, then Huatulco’s nine bays and the marina at Chahue. Highway 200 is assessed leg by leg. Add a private flight or a yacht where the road does not justify itself.

The risk picture, honestly: roads, taxis, the sea and the ground

Canada advises a high degree of caution across Mexico and does not list Oaxaca among the states to avoid. The British FCDO records protests blocking vehicle access to Oaxaca airport and warns of express kidnapping and of unlicensed taxi drivers robbing passengers. Protest here is political life with a long memory: the teachers’ strike of 2006 grew into a conflict that left at least 17 dead. Foreign nationals may not take part in political activity in Mexico, so a detail routes around it, with respect. The coast adds rip currents at Zicatela and a strong undertow at Zipolite, where you swim by the flag system. The ground moves: a magnitude 7.4 earthquake off the coast between Huatulco and Salina Cruz killed ten people in 2020. The Pacific brings hurricanes. If a blockade closes the airport road, no detail opens it. What we do is check the night before and again at first light, and move the day if we need to.

The calendar: Guelaguetza, Day of the Dead and the quiet months

The Guelaguetza falls on the two Mondays after 16 July, in an open-air amphitheatre built into Cerro del Fortín and rebuilt between 2008 and 2010. Tickets are scarce. The entrance and the exit are walked in advance. The Day of the Dead runs from 31 October to 2 November, and at Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán, about 5 km from the city, families keep vigil from dusk until dawn on the nights of 31 October and 1 November. A cemetery at midnight is a crowd and darkness problem, so the parking and the walk are planned first. Noche de Rábanos fills the main square on 23 December. The valley is dry from about November to April, and March to May is the hottest stretch. The Pacific hurricane season runs from mid-May to the end of November, and in that window the coast plan includes the way out.

How a Oaxaca detail is actually run

It starts with the diary, never with a headcount. Under NDA we read the dates, the venues, the profile and the roads, then propose the smallest team that covers the brief: often a security driver alone in the city, one officer with a driver for the valley and the coast. For a quiet week in the Centro, a vetted driver is often the honest answer. Each morning the closures are checked and the alternates chosen. Venues are walked before you arrive: the palenque, the cemetery gate, the entrance actually used at the amphitheatre. Altitude is planned for older principals, at 1,555 metres in the city and about 1,940 at Monte Albán. A medical route and an evacuation option are held before the day starts.

What a bodyguard costs in Oaxaca.

Close protection in Oaxaca starts from USD 750 per day for one officer on twelve-hour cover. A security driver, an armoured or soft-skin vehicle, flights and hotels are each quoted as its own line, one figure per line, confirmed before you pay. Multi-officer details, coast legs and festival weeks sit above the base and are quoted to the brief.

Armed cover sits above the base, needs a minimum 30-day lead time for authorisation and may be refused. Further reading: what a bodyguard costs and bodyguard laws by country.

Mexican Legal Framework

Why protection in Oaxaca must be licensed.

Private security in Mexico is governed by the Federal Private Security Law. A company working in two or more states needs authorisation from the federal Secretaría de Seguridad y Protección Ciudadana; a company working only inside Oaxaca answers to the state’s own private security rules. Protecting a person is its own modality, seguridad privada a personas. The provider must be Mexican, and under the federal law each officer is entered in the national registry and carries the regulator’s card on duty.

Firearms fall under the Federal Firearms and Explosives Law, administered by the defence ministry, and a company may be armed only under a collective licence. Neither the work nor the weapon is open to a visiting foreign officer. Algoz coordinates only inside this framework: see how our close protection works, add executive transportation, or plan a multi-city itinerary.

When to Hire

The moments that call for protection in Oaxaca.

The Guelaguetza and the Day of the Dead come first, when crowds, darkness and scarce rooms meet. Then the arrival, the coast transfer and the palenque day with valuables in the car.

Families in a rented house, collectors buying textiles and art and business visits to the Isthmus make up the rest. If your week is one hotel in the Centro and no late nights, a vetted driver may be all you need, and we will say so.

Good to Know

Bodyguard in Oaxaca: frequently asked questions

How much does a bodyguard in Oaxaca cost?

From USD 750 per day for one officer on twelve-hour cover. A security driver, an armoured or soft-skin vehicle, flights and hotels are each quoted as its own line, one figure per line, confirmed before you pay. Multi-officer details, coast legs and festival weeks sit above the base.

Is it legal to hire a bodyguard in Oaxaca, and who licenses the officer?

Yes, through an authorised Mexican company. A company working in two or more states needs federal authorisation under the Federal Private Security Law; one working only inside Oaxaca answers to the state's own private security rules. The provider must be Mexican. A visitor without a work permit may not be paid for work in Mexico, which rules out a bodyguard you bring from home, armed or unarmed.

Can my bodyguard be armed in Oaxaca?

Only through a Mexican company holding a collective firearms licence from the defence ministry, and one held for another state cannot be assumed to cover Oaxaca. Armed authorisation needs a minimum 30-day lead time, may be refused and costs more. It is almost never the right answer here, and we will not sell it because it sounds reassuring. Bringing a firearm or ammunition into Mexico without prior written authorisation is a federal offence that carries prison.

How much notice do you need for a protection detail in Oaxaca?

We ask for at least seven days. Shorter notice is looked at case by case; under 48 hours carries an urgency fee and is not guaranteed. For the Guelaguetza and the Day of the Dead, ask far earlier, because officers, drivers and rooms go first.

Is Oaxaca safe for a high-profile or wealthy visitor?

We give no verdict, because the honest answer is specific. Canada advises a high degree of caution across Mexico and does not list Oaxaca among the states to avoid. What we plan around first is blockades, taxis, opportunistic theft, the sea and the weather. Canada also warns of express kidnapping, with victims often taken from the street or a taxi, which is why every movement runs in a vetted car.

What happens if a blockade closes the airport road or the highway during my stay?

No detail opens a closed road. What we do is check the night before and again at first light, choose the alternate and move the day, sometimes with a flight instead of a road. Protests have blocked vehicle access to Oaxaca airport, and closures can come in any month.

Can you meet us at Oaxaca airport, or at Huatulco and Puerto Escondido, including a private jet?

Yes. Immigration and screening stay yours to clear; the officer meets you on the far side. Oaxaca has a general aviation apron and heliports, and Huatulco a general aviation terminal. Puerto Escondido keeps official hours of 07h00 to 19h00, so a late arrival is planned around them.

How do you get from Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido, and is the new highway a safe choice?

By road in under three hours on the highway opened in 2024, or by air. We give no verdict on any road. We drive it in daylight, read the weather and any closures that morning, and hold an alternate. In hurricane season the answer is sometimes to fly.

Can the same detail cover Monte Albán, Mitla, Hierve el Agua and the palenques of Matatlán?

Yes, in one day or across several. The vehicle is held at each stop, and the road to Hierve el Agua, which has been blocked more than once, is checked before you leave, along with whether the site is open.

When is the Guelaguetza, do you cover it, and how early should we book?

It falls on the two Mondays after 16 July, and the state publishes each year's dates; the 2027 dates had not been published when this page was written. We cover it. Tickets are scarce and officers, drivers and rooms go far earlier than the week itself, so ask as soon as the trip is decided.

Can you protect a family during Day of the Dead in Oaxaca, including the Xoxocotlán cemetery at night?

Yes. Families keep vigil at Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán from dusk until dawn on the nights of 31 October and 1 November. In the dark and the crowd, the parking, the walk and the way back are settled first. It is also someone else's family at a grave: the officer is discreet, and we will tell you what not to photograph.

Can one team cover Oaxaca City and the coast, including Puerto Escondido, Huatulco, Zipolite and Mazunte?

Yes, under one brief and one contact, with the coast planned as a second programme. Zicatela is unsuitable for swimming because of rip currents, and at Zipolite the undertow is strong, so you swim by the flag system. From mid-May to the end of November the coast plan includes the way out.

Do I need a security driver or an armoured car in Oaxaca?

A security driver, usually yes. An armoured car, not always, and we say so plainly. Armour makes sense for a recognisable principal, longer road legs or repeated routines. It is quoted as its own line, because an armoured car driven badly protects nobody.

Do your officers speak English, and are female officers available in Oaxaca?

Officers and security drivers work in Spanish and English. Female officers can be requested for family movement, for women travelling alone and for anyone who prefers them. Availability is limited, so ask early; if none is free for your dates, we say so before you commit.

Why use Algoz rather than hiring a Mexican security company directly?

Because from abroad there is no reliable way to tell a properly authorised, well-run firm from one that only claims to be. Algoz selects the provider, checks its authorisation for every state your route crosses, places every officer under NDA and supervises the detail, with one contact throughout.

I am an assistant or family office booking for a principal in Oaxaca. How does it work?

You brief once and keep one contact. You receive a written proposal and one number for changes; the officer and driver profiles and the routes follow once the engagement is confirmed. Nothing about the principal is shared beyond what the work requires.

A Trusted Single Point of Contact

Principals and the people who plan for them - executive assistants, personal assistants, chiefs of staff, family offices and the agencies and producers who book on a client’s behalf - brief Algoz once and we coordinate the rest. Every detail in Oaxaca is delivered by accredited, locally licensed close protection officers (male and female), armoured transport where the threat picture warrants it, and 24/7 operations - coordinated and quality-controlled by Algoz under NDA. UHNWI and HNWI principals, royal and family offices, executives, celebrities and public figures rely on Algoz as a credible, trustworthy first call.
