Greenland is three coasts, two seasons and no road between any of them.

The west, from Nuuk up to Ilulissat and Disko Bay, is flown from Copenhagen, about four hours to Nuuk, and new runways at Nuuk in 2024 and at Qaqortoq and Ilulissat in 2026 have changed the arithmetic. The east, with Tasiilaq and Scoresby Sund, is reached from Iceland. The far north-east opens to expedition ships for a few weeks, when the ice allows.

Algoz is a protection house that runs Greenland luxury expeditions through our Swiss travel partner house and the expedition operators and yachts that sail these waters. One contact, one written proposal, under NDA from the first message. Send the months and the party.

  • One contact, in your language, from the first message to the last flight home
  • The yacht, ship or lodge matched honestly to the party and the month
  • Flights, runways and helicopters planned around the weather, with spare days
  • Lodges, tables and Icefjord boats held before the season fills
  • Permits and visits ashore handled by the published rules
  • An unarmed protection officer where the brief needs one
Straight Answers

Planning a Greenland luxury expedition.

What it is

One brief for a country with no roads

The vessel, the lodges, the flights, the helicopters and the permits, held as one journey by one contact. One grounded helicopter can undo a week, and the plan assumes it will happen.

Cost

What it costs

Every element is quoted as its own line, one figure per line, confirmed before you pay. We publish no figure for Greenland, because a per-person "from" price says nothing about your party, your month or your vessel.

Lead time

How far ahead to book

Months ahead, not weeks: the 2027 lodge seasons and voyage calendars are already published, and peak weeks go first.

The vessel

Yacht, ship or lodge?

An ice-class yacht for a family or an owner's party. A Polar Class expedition ship for the far north-east, where a private vessel needs its own permit and a great deal of range. Lodges and the hotels of Ilulissat for those who would rather sleep ashore. We say which fits before you commit.

Coverage

Where we arrange

Ilulissat and Disko Bay, Nuuk and its fjord, Kangerlussuaq and the edge of the ice sheet, Maniitsoq, Tasiilaq and Kulusuk, Scoresby Sund and Ittoqqortoormiit, the Northeast Greenland National Park, and South Greenland through Qaqortoq.

Protection

Is an officer available?

Yes, unarmed: a protective presence with no police powers, which in Greenland is mostly logistics, privacy and the person who notices first. See how close protection works.

What We Arrange

A Greenland expedition, line by line.

Sea

Yachts and Expedition Cabins

A sole-use ice-class yacht, or the best suite on a Polar Class ship. The vessels built for this water are few, and we say plainly which are free for your dates.

Stay

Lodges and Hotels

Hotel Arctic and Hotel Icefiord at Ilulissat, the summer lodges at Ilimanaq and Eqi, Igloo Lodge in winter, Hotel Hans Egede in Nuuk and camps of no more than ten guests. Named as what exists, chosen for the brief.

Air

Flights and Helicopters

Scheduled seats where they are the sensible answer, private aviation where the runway allows, and helicopters where no runway exists. Air Greenland charters helicopters for tourism.

Ashore

Permits and Visits

Permission from the Government of Greenland for the National Park, the vessel's permit for restricted waters, the special rules of the Icefjord, and visits to settlements run by the published visitor rules, briefed before you land.

Contingency

Medicine and Evacuation

Insurance that covers helicopter rescue and medical evacuation, satellite communication away from the towns, spare days around every transfer and a plan for the morning the fog does not lift.

Protect

A Protection Officer

Vetted, briefed with the crew and carrying no weapon. For a recognised family, a principal with a name, or an owner who wants one person whose only task is the party.

Ilulissat and the Icefjord

Ilulissat Icefjord joined the UNESCO list in 2004: about 40 kilometres of ice running from the ice sheet to Disko Bay, well north of the Arctic Circle. Sermeq Kujalleq, the glacier behind it, has the highest flow of any glacier draining the Greenland ice sheet, moves tens of metres a day and feeds around a tenth of its icebergs. The boardwalk from the Icefjord Centre, by Dorte Mandrup, leads into Sermermiut, settled for almost 4,000 years. Hotel Arctic is four-star, open all year and front row to the Icefjord; Hotel Icefiord has 36 rooms over Disko Bay. Ilimanaq Lodge, about 15 kilometres away by boat, and Glacier Lodge Eqi, about 80, run from mid-June to early September. The new 2,200-metre runway opened on 29 October 2026.

Disko Bay by expedition yacht

Disko Bay is about 150 kilometres by 100, the largest open bay in West Greenland, with icebergs grounded off Ilulissat, and Qasigiannguit, Aasiaat and Disko Island around its shores. Bowhead and humpback whales arrive from spring, and June to September is the best window by boat. The yachts for this water are few: Hanse Explorer, 47.76 metres and ice-class, takes twelve guests; Cloudbreak, at 72 metres, has an ice-reinforced hull. They are named as the kind of vessel, not a promise of availability. On a sole-use charter your party sets the pace, the table and the priorities, inside the permit, the ice and the weather, with a helicopter where the yacht can carry one or one can be chartered.

Yacht charter
03 —

Nuuk, the fjord and the gateway

Greenland's capital, a few kilometres further north than Reykjavik: about 20,000 people at the mouth of Nuup Kangerlua, with Katuaq, the National Museum and its Qilakitsoq mummies, and Hotel Hans Egede with the Sarfalik table. Deep in the fjord, Camp Kiattua takes no more than ten guests from June to October, in heated accommodation with proper beds and private bathrooms. The rebuilt 2,200-metre runway opened on 28 November 2024: Air Greenland flies Copenhagen in about four hours, Icelandair comes from Keflavik, and United flies Newark in season. Kangerlussuaq, with a 2,810-metre runway and the only road to the ice sheet, remains the long field and the diversion. For private aviation, runway length and surface decide the aircraft and the stop, confirmed with the operator for the dates.

Private jet charter

East Greenland: Tasiilaq, Kulusuk and Scoresby Sund

Kulusuk is about two hours from Iceland by airline, and a helicopter crosses to Tasiilaq, 1,830 people on Ammassalik Island and the largest town on the east coast, with ice caves, glacier walks and spring ski terrain behind it. Further north, Scoresby Sund is one of the largest fjord systems on earth: some 38,000 square kilometres, with branches running 340 to 350 kilometres inland. Ittoqqortoormiit, 329 people and the only permanent settlement in the region, is reached from Iceland by Norlandair to Nerlerit Inaat and a helicopter of about 15 minutes. Ships come principally in the second half of August into mid-September, and the oak schooner Hildur is offered for private charter on these waters. Kulusuk and Nerlerit Inaat are short gravel strips, which decides the aircraft.

Private travel

The Northeast Greenland National Park

At 972,000 square kilometres, the largest national park in the world, with no permanent population. Musk oxen, walrus and polar bears along a coast that opens to ships from late July in ice-permitting years. You need permission from the Government of Greenland: a voyage operator holds it for its guests, and a private yacht must hold its own. For most parties the honest answer is a Polar Class expedition ship and the best suite aboard, not a yacht at the edge of its range. Ashore, bear defence sits with the expedition staff and guests never handle firearms. Our officer carries no weapon and has no police powers, and that is what a protective presence means here.

Winter Greenland: sled dogs, aurora and heli-skiing

The sun returns to Ilulissat on 13 January after about six weeks of polar night. Dog sledding runs there from January to April, in the sled-dog districts north of the Arctic Circle and on the east coast, and it can reach minus 30 on the sled. The northern lights run from late August to April; Igloo Lodge near Ilulissat, a true igloo stay without electricity or running water, and the Aurora Lodge cabins of Hotel Icefiord are built for them. Heli-skiing is a spring matter, broadly April and May, at Maniitsoq and around Tasiilaq, weeks confirmed by the operator. The rules ashore are short. Ask before photographing a person, and hesitation means no. Never approach, pet or feed a sled dog. Keep away from private windows. Cultural remains are protected by law, so stay well clear.

What a luxury concierge costs
Greenland by Season

The calendar the voyages are booked around.

January and February

The light returns

Polar night ends at Ilulissat on 13 January. Aurora and dog sledding begin, and Igloo Lodge opens at the end of January, once the snow is deep enough. Expect minus 24 to minus 5 degrees in January.

March and April

The sled and the last aurora

Dog sledding at its best and the last of the aurora, with East Greenland strong. Arctic Sounds fills Sisimiut in late March, and April brings the Arctic Circle Race at Sisimiut and the National Dogsled Race at Qeqertarsuaq. The heli-ski weeks begin.

May

Skiing to the sea

Heli-skiing around Maniitsoq and the Ammassalik area, with descents that end at iceberg-filled seas. The weeks belong to the operator and the snow, and are confirmed each season.

June and July

The midnight sun

At Ilulissat the sun does not set from late May into July. Ilimanaq and Eqi open in mid-June, National Day falls on 21 June, the whales are back and the Nuuk Five Peaks runs in July. Bring a mosquito net.

August and September

The east opens

Northeast Greenland opens from late July in ice-permitting years; Scoresby Sund is principally the second half of August into mid-September. Aurora returns in late August, whales gather off Disko Island in September and the lodges close early that month.

October to December

The quiet months

The Suialaa Arts Festival in Nuuk in October, the Polar Circle Marathon on 30 and 31 October 2027 by its organiser's calendar, then polar night in the north and New Year in Ilulissat. Few voyages, and a different country.

The Engagement

How a Greenland luxury expedition is arranged.

Step One

Enquiry

You write once, in any of our languages, with the months, the party and what you want to see. Held under NDA from the first message.

Step Two

The Brief

Who travels, their ages and health, how much cold and rough water they will accept, and whether a name changes the security picture.

Step Three

Proposal

The vessel, the lodges, the flights, the helicopters and the permits, each quoted as its own line, one figure per line, confirmed before you pay. Where a cabin or a yacht does not exist for your dates, we say so.

Step Four

The Voyage

Arranged through our Swiss travel partner house and the operators and yachts that run the voyages. Transfers, baggage limits, spare days and the plan for a closed sky are written down before you leave.

Step Five

On Board

Your one contact stays reachable from the first flight to the last. The captain and the expedition leader decide what the ice and the weather allow, and nobody on our side argues with them.

Step Six

After

The flights home, the kit shipped, the invoice reconciled to the proposal. What you saw and who you were stays under the NDA.

Excellence, Discreetly Delivered

“In Greenland the ice has the last word. Everything before that word is our work.”

Algoz Group
What It Costs

What a private Greenland expedition costs.

There is no honest single figure. A private voyage is built from the vessel, the weeks, the flights and helicopters, the lodges, the guides and the permits, and each is quoted as its own line, one figure per line, confirmed before you pay, and nothing is discovered on the ice.

Close protection carries no published figure here: the officer is quoted to the brief, with travel and the officer's berth as separate lines. An expedition is booked months ahead, not weeks. We ask for at least seven days for anything, under 48 hours carries an urgency fee and is not guaranteed, and peak weeks book out far earlier. See what a luxury concierge costs and what a bodyguard costs.

Good to Know

Greenland Luxury Expeditions: Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Greenland luxury expedition cost?

There is no honest single figure, and we do not publish one. The vessel, the weeks, the flights and helicopters, the lodges, the guides and the permits are each quoted as its own line, one figure per line, confirmed before you pay.

When is the best time to visit Greenland for icebergs?

Summer is the simple answer. At Ilulissat the sun does not set from late May into July, and June to September is the best window by boat. The icebergs do not stop: Sermeq Kujalleq sends tens of billions of tonnes of ice through the fjord every year.

Can you see the northern lights in Greenland and when?

Yes, from late August to April, never under the midnight sun. South Greenland and Nuuk are good from late August into September, Ilulissat from January to April alongside the dogs, and Tasiilaq and Kulusuk in March and April. We plan around the moon and promise nothing: the aurora is weather, and anyone who guarantees it is selling.

How do you get to Ilulissat from Europe or the United States?

Air Greenland flies Copenhagen to Ilulissat on the new runway, open since 29 October 2026, weekly at the time of writing, and Icelandair flies Keflavik to Ilulissat in season. From the United States, United flies Newark to Nuuk from June to September, and a domestic flight continues north. SAS dropped Copenhagen to Nuuk in 2026, so older advice is out of date. We confirm the schedule for your dates in the proposal.

Is Greenland safe for high-profile travellers?

In the ordinary sense, yes. Canada's travel advice, updated in May 2026, says to take normal security precautions and reports a low crime rate. The real risk is remoteness: no roads between towns, weather that stops flights, and emergency services that may not reach isolated places. Since 2025 Greenland has been in the international news and Nuuk has drawn foreign press, so a recognised name is assessed against the climate of the day, and a small town notices everything.

Can I charter a private yacht in Greenland?

Yes, though the suitable vessels are few and the season is short. Ice-class yachts such as Hanse Explorer and ice-reinforced yachts such as Cloudbreak are offered for Greenland, with availability confirmed for your dates. You choose the anchorages and the hours, and the captain decides what the ice permits.

Do I need a visa for Greenland if I have a Schengen visa?

Yes, if your nationality needs a visa at all. Greenland is outside Schengen and the EU, so a visa for Denmark or any Schengen state is not valid there. Nordic, UK, US, Canadian, Australian, Japanese, UAE, Brazilian, Mexican and Swiss citizens are visa-free. Citizens of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Russia, China and India generally apply separately through the Danish immigration authorities, and a residence permit from Denmark or another Schengen country may change the answer. Each passport and permit is confirmed in the brief.

How far ahead do you need to book a Greenland expedition?

Far ahead. We ask for at least seven days for anything, and under 48 hours carries an urgency fee and is not guaranteed, but an expedition is booked months ahead, not weeks, because the season is short and the vessels and lodge rooms are few. Peak weeks book out far earlier, and the 2027 calendars are already published.

Can you heli-ski in Greenland?

Yes, in spring, broadly April and May, with the weeks confirmed by the operator each season. The terrain is around Maniitsoq in the west and the Ammassalik area around Tasiilaq in the east, and descents can end at iceberg-filled seas. Air Greenland charters helicopters for tourism, including heli-skiing.

When can you go dog sledding in Greenland?

Only in the sled-dog districts: north of the Arctic Circle on the west coast, and across East Greenland. At Ilulissat it runs from January to April, and February to April are best at Sisimiut and Kangerlussuaq. It can reach minus 30 on the sled, and mushers may not speak English. The dogs are working animals, so children and adults alike keep their distance.

Can a private yacht enter Scoresby Sund and the Northeast Greenland National Park?

Yes, with permission and the right vessel. The National Park requires permission from the Government of Greenland: organised voyages carry the operator's permit and a chartered vessel needs its own. Northeast Greenland opens from late July in ice-permitting years, and Scoresby Sund is principally the second half of August into mid-September. For many parties a Polar Class expedition ship is the honest answer, and we will tell you when it is.

Is there a hospital in Greenland and how does evacuation work?

There is a national hospital in Nuuk, Queen Ingrid's, with 130 beds, and smaller hospitals in the towns. Serious cases are discussed with Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen and evacuated there, or to Reykjavik in rare cases when it is closer, by air ambulance or helicopter, weather permitting. Your insurance must cover helicopter rescue and medical evacuation, because evacuation may otherwise be at your own expense. Bring all regular medication.

Can children come on a Greenland expedition?

Yes, and the plan is then built around them. We weigh age, seasickness, the cold and the distance from a hospital, and we say plainly when a voyage is too remote for a small child. Operators may set their own minimum ages, which we confirm for the vessel. Children are briefed on the dogs, the water and the polar bear rules before they go ashore.

Are bodyguards allowed in Greenland and can they be armed?

Protection in Greenland is unarmed, and we never offer armed cover there. A visiting officer holds no police powers and carries no weapon; policing is a Danish state function run from Nuuk. On expedition landings the armed bear guard is the operator's staff, not ours. Greenland has its own rules on work, so each officer's footing is settled in the brief, not assumed. The officer is quoted to the brief, with travel and the officer's berth as separate lines.

Can my assistant or family office book Greenland through Algoz?

Yes. An assistant or family office can hold the brief and receive the proposal line by line, and we track passports, visas, insurance and baggage limits against the itinerary. Everything is under NDA from the first message.

Why book Greenland through Algoz rather than a cruise line?

A cruise line sells its own ships, and if one of them suits you, book it: we will say so. Algoz starts from the party, not the fleet, with flights, helicopters and permits on one proposal and one contact, and privacy and an unarmed officer on the same brief. Where we cannot deliver to our own standard in a given month, we say so rather than accepting the work and learning on your expedition.
