Hiring a bodyguard in San Miguel de Allende, answered.

You can hire a bodyguard in San Miguel de Allende through Mexican companies authorised to protect people. Algoz arranges everything inside that framework: a vetted officer or security driver at the airport, a residence looked at before you arrive, and one contact under NDA for the whole stay.

Canada and the UK draw their lines at Highway 45D, south of the town, and that does not clear it. The exposure is the road, so the protection is mostly in the driving. Send your dates for a written proposal with no obligation. For a quiet week in Centro a security driver alone is often the honest answer, and we say so.

  • Vetted Mexican officers, former police, military or federal service, under NDA
  • Querétaro first: met inside the terminal or on the private side, not at the kerb
  • Toll roads wherever one exists, the toll-free final leg in daylight where the schedule allows
  • Centro on foot: the officer ahead in the street, the car held where it can leave
  • The rented casona or hacienda walked first, household and event staff vetted
  • One contact from proposal to departure, with Day of the Dead reserved well ahead
Straight Answers

What people ask before enquiring.

Legality

Is it legal?

Yes, through authorised companies. The Federal Private Security Law lists the protection of people as its first modality (article 15-I), and every officer must be trained and on the national register (article 28). A bodyguard on a visitor permit has no right to paid work here.

Cost

What it costs

From USD 750 per day for one officer on twelve-hour cover. Each further item, from a security driver to an armoured vehicle, is quoted as its own line.

Speed

How fast

We ask for at least seven days. Shorter notice is looked at case by case; under 48 hours carries an urgency fee and is not guaranteed. Day of the Dead and wedding weekends book out far earlier.

Weapons

Armed or unarmed

Armed protection exists in Mexico only through Mexican companies holding a collective firearms licence from the defence ministry. It needs a minimum 30-day lead, may be refused, and for most San Miguel visits a low-profile, well-driven unarmed detail is the better answer. A foreign officer cannot work a detail or carry a weapon in Mexico.

Coverage

Where we cover

Centro and the colonias, Highway 51 towards Dolores Hidalgo, the golf communities, Querétaro and Juriquilla, Guanajuato city and León. Then Mexico City, Guadalajara and the rest of Mexico.

Language

Who you get

Vetted Mexican officers with former police, military or federal service, in Spanish and English, with female officers on request. Mexican law bars serving police and soldiers from private security work.

What We Arrange

Bodyguard services in San Miguel de Allende.

Officers

Authorised Mexican officers

Vetted officers of authorised Mexican companies, on the national register, NDA-bound and briefed to the Algoz standard. They read as an assistant or a friend of the family.

Drivers

Security drivers

The first purchase here, and often the only one. A trained driver who knows the toll-free roads, the alternates and when not to stop. See executive transportation.

Arrivals

Terminals and private aviation

Met inside the terminal or on the private side, luggage counted, a vetted car waiting. Querétaro by default.

Residence

Casonas and haciendas

The street door, the roof terrace and the staff entrance walked before you arrive, and household staff vetted through the Mexican partner.

Events

Weddings and festivals

Guest movement, the church door, the vendors and the late walk back. A protected wedding does not look protected. It looks like a family enjoying a very good day.

Concierge

Concierge and security

Tables, private access and hotels arranged by the same house that protects you, because the reservation and the route are the same decision.

Centro, the Jardín & the streets where you will actually be

The historic core is 43 hectares at about 1,900 metres, inscribed by UNESCO in 2008, with the neo-Gothic Parroquia over the Jardín Principal. Hotels open straight onto the street: Rosewood on Nemesio Diez, Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada on Hospicio, Matilda on Aldama, Dos Casas on Quebrada, and a Waldorf Astoria still under construction on El Cardo. A large foreign community, mostly American and Canadian retirees, lives behind plain doors. By some reports Centro has about 5,000 parking spaces for the 100,000 or more visitors of a holiday, and a second car often cannot hold position. So this is walking work: the officer ahead in the street, the car held where it can leave, the altitude taken seriously for older principals.

Arriving: Querétaro first, the Bajío airport with care

Querétaro Intercontinental is the default answer, about an hour to ninety minutes away by Highway 57D and the 35 km connector of Highway 111, with US routes to Dallas, Houston, Atlanta and Chicago and two private operators, Airbusiness FBO and RWS. The Bajío airport at Silao has the larger US network and lies about ninety minutes out, but Silao is a municipality the UK names in its advice against all but essential travel, and the UK says travelling against its advice can invalidate insurance. British travellers should check their policy first. From Mexico City it is three and a half to four hours by road, or a short flight to Querétaro. We drive toll roads wherever one exists, with the toll-free final legs from 57D in daylight where the schedule allows, and an alternate held for every leg.

Guanajuato, honestly: the corridor, the line & the road

Guanajuato was first in Mexico by homicide count every year from 2018 to 2024. The killing is concentrated in the corridor along Highway 45D, in León, Irapuato, Salamanca and Celaya, and grows out of a cartel fight over the pipelines feeding the Salamanca refinery. Federal figures for January to August 2026 show a 43 per cent fall on the same months of 2025, though how some of the statistics are categorised has been questioned. Canada warns against non-essential travel south of and including highways 43D and 45D. The UK advises against all but essential travel south-west of 45D, naming Celaya, Irapuato, Salamanca and Silao. Neither Canada nor the UK names the town, which is not the same as clearing it. When the Jalisco cartel’s leader was killed on 22 February 2026, the mayor reportedly ordered a curfew from 15h00, the road to Celaya was reported closed and one local reporter saw no police or roadblocks in town, while burning-vehicle blockades were reported elsewhere in the state. Extortion does reach the town’s businesses. A detail that drives badly to Celaya is worse than no detail.

How a San Miguel detail is actually run

It starts with the diary, never with a headcount. We read the dates, the venues, the profile and the roads, then propose the smallest team that covers the brief, which is often a security driver alone. A rented casona or hacienda is walked first, and household and event staff are vetted through the Mexican partner. We liaise with the hotel and the municipal Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana where the brief needs it. Hospital MAC is on Camino a Alcocer, and we confirm capability and the transfer route to Querétaro in the plan. One contact stays from proposal to departure.

Beyond the town: Querétaro, Guanajuato, León & the estates

Querétaro has a UNESCO centre, the Juriquilla district and an aerospace cluster, Bombardier among it. Guanajuato city sits at 2,045 metres about 100 km away, with road tunnels under the centre and the Teatro Juárez. León, about 165 km out, brings the leather fairs at Poliforum. Highway 51 runs towards Dolores Hidalgo past Rancho Los Labradores at km 65.5, and the golf communities of Malanquín, Las Ventanas and Zirándaro sit on the same brief. Atotonilco is about 14 km north, and Cañada de la Virgen is guided groups only. The movement between these places is the exposure, so each leg is planned and some are replaced by a flight. León and the Bajío plants lie along the 45D corridor, and those days are assessed before we agree to them.

The calendar: weddings, the Alborada, Cervantino & Day of the Dead

Weddings run through the year: Belmond has venues for 12 to 150 guests and Rosewood takes buyouts. The Saturday before Holy Week the Señor de la Columna is carried in from Atotonilco, and Good Friday brings the Procession of Silence. The feast of San Miguel Arcángel, on 29 September, is kept on the last weekend of the month with the pre-dawn Alborada. Cervantino fills Guanajuato city each October, its 54th edition in 2026 with France as guest. In 2026 the Day of the Dead weekend drew more than 200,000 visitors, by the municipality’s own estimate. Each is a crowd problem with a known shape, reserved well ahead.

How It Works

The brief, the read, the officer, the road, the stay.

Step 01

The brief, under NDA

Dates, profile, residence, venues, how you arrive and where you go next, under NDA before a name is shared.

Step 02

The read

We read the diary and the roads, then tell you honestly whether you need an officer, a driver or both.

Step 03

The officer

Vetted, registered, male or female, matched to the profile. You see the profile before anyone is deployed.

Step 04

The road

Soft-skin or armoured to the brief, each leg from Querétaro and along Highway 111 planned, an alternate agreed.

Step 05

The stay

Present where the exposure sits: the Querétaro terminal, the casona door, the evening walk through Centro. Invisible everywhere else.

Step 06

One contact

One coordinator for the officer, the driver and the concierge side, through to the next city.

What protection in San Miguel de Allende costs.

Close protection in San Miguel de Allende is from USD 750 per day for one officer on twelve-hour cover. A security driver, a vehicle, an armoured vehicle where specified and a second officer are each quoted as their own line, one figure per line, confirmed before you pay.

Armed requirements and multi-vehicle teams sit above the base and are quoted to the brief. Armed authorisation needs a minimum 30-day lead time and may be refused. Further reading: what a bodyguard costs, our full close protection pricing guide and how a security driver works.

Mexican Legal Framework

Why protection in San Miguel must be licensed.

Private security in Mexico is governed by the Federal Private Security Law. A company working in two or more states is authorised at federal level, today by the Secretaría de Seguridad y Protección Ciudadana; one working only inside Guanajuato answers to the state’s rules. Every officer must be trained and on the national register (article 28), and an unregistered guard is outside the law the licensed sector works under.

A company may be armed only under a collective licence from the defence ministry. A visiting officer has no right to paid activity on a visitor permit (Migration Law, article 52), is not on the register and cannot be licensed to carry (firearms law, article 27). Algoz coordinates only inside this framework. See how our close protection works and bodyguard laws by country.

When to Hire

The moments that call for protection in San Miguel.

The wedding week is the obvious one: family, jewellery, late nights and the callejoneada. Day of the Dead, the Alborada and Cervantino nights in Guanajuato city are the crowd peaks.

The quieter category is larger: executives working Querétaro and the Bajío from a San Miguel base, families in a casona for a season, second-home owners who want the household vetted. Arrivals and road legs are when even a short stay benefits from a security driver.

Good to Know

Bodyguard in San Miguel de Allende: frequently asked questions

How much does a bodyguard in San Miguel de Allende cost?

From USD 750 per day for one officer on twelve-hour cover, confirmed on enquiry with no obligation. A security driver, a vehicle, an armoured vehicle and a second officer are each quoted as their own line, one figure per line, confirmed before you pay.

Is it legal to hire a bodyguard in San Miguel de Allende, and who is allowed to provide one?

Yes, through authorised Mexican companies. A company working in two or more states is authorised at federal level, and one working only inside Guanajuato answers to the state's rules. Every officer must be an adult with no criminal record, trained for the work and on the national register.

Can my bodyguard be armed in San Miguel de Allende?

Only through a Mexican company holding a collective firearms licence from the defence ministry. It needs a minimum 30-day lead time, may be refused, and for most San Miguel visits a low-profile, well-driven unarmed detail is the better answer. It is possible in law and rarely right in practice here.

Can I bring my own bodyguard from abroad to Mexico?

Not to work. An officer travelling with you from abroad cannot work a detail or carry a weapon in Mexico: a visitor permit gives no right to paid activity, and a visiting officer is not on the national register. The practical answer is a Mexican detail, briefed by your own security lead before you land.

How quickly can you put a bodyguard in place in San Miguel de Allende?

We ask for at least seven days, which is what vetting the brief, assigning the right officer and completing the advance work takes. Shorter notice is looked at case by case. Under 48 hours carries an urgency fee and is not guaranteed.

Is San Miguel de Allende safe, given what is said about Guanajuato?

There is no honest one-word answer. Canada and the UK draw their lines at Highway 45D, and the UK names other towns. Neither names San Miguel, but that clears nothing. Extortion does reach local businesses. What you can manage is the road, the hour and the routine.

How does the violence in Celaya, Irapuato and Salamanca affect a visit to San Miguel?

Mostly through the road. The violence is concentrated along Highway 45D. On 22 February 2026 the road to Celaya was reported closed and burning-vehicle blockades were reported elsewhere in the state, while one local reporter saw no police or roadblocks in town. We hold an alternate for every leg.

Which airport should I use for San Miguel de Allende, Querétaro or León, and can you meet a private jet?

Querétaro is our default: about an hour to ninety minutes by road, with two private operators, Airbusiness FBO and RWS. The Bajío airport at Silao has more US routes, but Silao is a municipality the UK names in its advice, so British travellers should check their insurance. We meet you inside the terminal or on the private side.

Is it safe to drive from Mexico City to San Miguel de Allende?

It is a road to plan rather than assume: about three and a half to four hours on Highway 57D, then Highway 111, which has no toll alternative. We drive the toll-free final legs in daylight where the schedule allows. A short flight to Querétaro often replaces most of the distance. The Mexico City to Querétaro train is still being built.

Do I need an armoured car in San Miguel de Allende?

Usually not, and we say so plainly. In Centro an armoured SUV is conspicuous, and a soft-skin car with a vetted security driver is often the proportionate answer. Higher profiles, repeated routines or days along the 45D corridor can justify one. It is quoted as its own line, because an armoured vehicle driven badly protects nobody.

Can you protect a wedding week in San Miguel de Allende?

Yes. Weddings run through the year here, and the work is guest arrivals from Querétaro, the church door, the walk through the streets and the late return. We are a security house that plans weddings, not a planner that hires guards.

Do you cover Day of the Dead, the Alborada and the Cervantino in Guanajuato city?

Yes. Day of the Dead fills Centro over the holiday weekend. The Alborada falls before dawn on the last weekend of September, and Cervantino runs each October in Guanajuato city, about 100 km away. Officers and vehicles are reserved well ahead.

Can you assess our rented casona or hacienda and vet the household staff?

Yes, and for a long stay it is often worth more than a visible officer. We walk the street door, the roof terrace and the staff entrance, look at who holds keys, and vet household and event staff through the Mexican partner. That applies to expatriate families and second-home owners as much as to visitors.

Do you cover Querétaro, Juriquilla, Guanajuato city, León and the Bajío plants from a San Miguel base?

Yes, leg by leg. Guanajuato city is about 100 km away and León about 165 km. The plants at Silao, Salamanca, Celaya and Irapuato sit in municipalities the UK names in its advice, so those days are assessed first. Some are better flown or moved to a different base, and we say so.

Do you have female officers and English-speaking officers in San Miguel de Allende?

Yes. Female officers are available for family movement, for women travelling alone and for principals who prefer it. Officers and security drivers assigned to international principals work in Spanish and English, and further languages can be arranged with notice.

I am an assistant or family office booking for a principal. How does it work and why Algoz rather than a local firm?

You brief once and keep one contact, with a written proposal, the officer and driver profiles and a single number for changes. From the outside it is hard to separate an authorised firm from one that merely claims to be, so Algoz does that filtering. If nobody genuinely fits, we say so.
