Bodyguard in Tulum & the Riviera Maya
Hiring a bodyguard in Tulum, answered.
You can hire a bodyguard in Tulum and the Riviera Maya through authorised Mexican companies, and that is the only lawful route. On this coast protection is mostly the car, the villa and the timing of the evening, not a visible guard.
Algoz is a protection house that also runs the concierge side, so the villa, the chef, the yacht, the tables and the officer answer to one contact. Send your dates and you receive a written proposal and a final rate, with no obligation.
- Vetted Mexican officers under federal or state authorisation, NDA-bound
- Tulum International or Cancún met inside the terminal, vetted vehicle on Highway 307
- A residence assessment of the villa before the family lands
- Beach club and downtown evenings timed, the door and the exit planned first
- Playa del Carmen, Mayakoba, Akumal, Bacalar and Holbox under one brief
- The concierge side arranged by the same team, quoted as its own line
What people ask before enquiring.
Is it legal?
Yes, through authorised Mexican companies, under the Federal Private Security Law and Quintana Roo’s state authorisation. A foreign officer cannot work a detail or carry a weapon in Mexico.
What it costs
From USD 750 per day for one officer on twelve-hour cover. A security driver, the vehicle, villa work and yacht days are each quoted as their own line, one figure per line, confirmed before you pay.
How fast
We ask for at least seven days. Shorter notice is looked at case by case; under 48 hours carries an urgency fee and is not guaranteed. The Zamna season books out far earlier.
Armed or unarmed
Armed protection exists in Mexico only through Mexican companies holding a collective firearms licence from the defence ministry. It needs a minimum 30-day lead, may be refused and is never promised. For most visits a low-profile, well-driven detail is the better answer.
Where we cover
The Tulum beach road, the Pueblo, Aldea Zama, La Veleta, Playa del Carmen, Mayakoba, Puerto Aventuras, Akumal, Xpu-Ha, Bacalar and Holbox, then Mexico City, Los Cabos and the rest of Mexico.
Who you get
Vetted officers with police, military or federal service backgrounds, working in Spanish and English, with female officers for family movement and further languages on request.
Executive protection and close protection on this coast.
Authorised Mexican officers
Registered through an authorised company, record-checked, NDA-bound and briefed to the Algoz standard. At the beach club they read as a friend of the house.
Security drivers
Usually the first purchase here: a trained driver in a vetted vehicle, soft-skin or armoured to the brief, who knows when not to stop. See executive transportation.
Residence assessment
The perimeter, the cameras, the staff and vendors, the road in, and the question most guests never ask: who employs the guard at the gate.
Beach clubs and the Pueblo
An officer who arrives first and leaves with you before the room empties, with the car held where it can actually leave.
Festivals, weddings, golf
Zamna and Day Zero in the jungle, weddings at Mayakoba, tournament weeks at El Camaleón and event security, each with advance work at the venue.
Yachts and islands
An officer aboard for a day from Puerto Aventuras, the tender and the quay planned with the captain.
The beach road, Aldea Zama and La Veleta: where you stay
Tulum is six places, and a protection plan begins by saying which one you are in. The Zona Hotelera runs along the sea on the Boca Paila road. The Pueblo sits inland on Highway 307, and its centre after dark is what the travel advisories mean. Aldea Zama and La Veleta hold most of the rental villas and condominiums, while the larger staffed estates sit on the coast, such as Soliman Bay. Sian Ka’an lies south, and the Parque del Jaguar entry gates the ruins and the national park beaches. Most villa listings promise round-the-clock security. Read closely, that is a street guard employed by someone else, an electric fence and a QR code. A gate guard is not a protection officer. Our residence assessment covers the perimeter, the guard’s employer, staff and vendors, the road in and the drive to a hospital, and it is finished before the family lands.
Villas and property rentalArrivals: Tulum International, Cancún and the private terminals
Tulum International opened on 1 December 2023, about 40 minutes by road from the town, longer to the beach road. Its Executive Aviation Terminal has its own customs, landing permits take about two business days and general aviation runs from 07h00 to 19h00, with overtime by prior arrangement. No scheduled route comes from Europe. Long-haul Europe lands at Cancún, an airport that operates around the clock with a full-service private terminal. The town of Tulum lies about 125 km south, roughly two hours on Highway 307, and that road is above all a driving problem: speed, rain, night and heavy vehicles. A crash on Highway 307 between Tulum and Playa del Carmen in February 2024 killed six people. The sequence never changes: officer inside the terminal, luggage counted, vetted vehicle and driver waiting. Uber reached Tulum in October 2026 and within about a week a taxi driver had assaulted an app driver, so we use neither street hails nor apps. See private jet charter.
Executive transportationThe Quintana Roo security picture, honestly
The public record is specific, so we will be too. A shooting at a festival party in Playa del Carmen in January 2017. Two visitors killed in crossfire at a bar in central Tulum in October 2021. A visitor shot dead over his watch in April 2023. A bystander killed by a stray bullet at a beach club in February 2024. Armed attacks at two electronic music events in January 2026. Several of these trace to disputes over drug retail, and one was a robbery. The UK Foreign Office tells visitors to “be very cautious after dark” in downtown Cancún, Tulum and Playa del Carmen. A National Guard tourist battalion has served the coast since December 2021. Most days on the beach and at the villa pass without incident, though one of the January 2026 attacks came in daylight, at a cenote. The exposure is the car, the door of the club at two in the morning and the predictable routine. If your week is a hotel and a beach, you may not need an officer at all, and we will say so.
Bodyguard and close protectionHow a Tulum detail is actually run
It starts with the diary, never with a headcount. We read the dates, the villa, the events and how you arrive, then propose the smallest team that genuinely covers the brief. Often that begins with a security driver, because on this coast the road is the job. A yacht day from Puerto Aventuras is planned with the captain, a wedding with the venue, a cenote or Cobá day as logistics. Medicine belongs in the plan. Tulum has clinics and small private units, serious cases transfer to Playa del Carmen or Cancún, and Hospiten Riviera Maya is named in the file. A private ambulance number is held from the first day, because a 911 call may send any provider.
How close protection worksBeyond Tulum: Playa del Carmen, Mayakoba, Akumal, Bacalar and Holbox
Playa del Carmen is a pedestrian crowd problem: Quinta Avenida after dark, with the vehicle held on a street that can actually be left. Mayakoba, just north, is a private enclave of four hotels, Rosewood, Banyan Tree, Fairmont and Alila, where the protective work is liaison with hotel security. Puerto Aventuras has the marina and the yacht days to Cozumel. Akumal’s turtle bay is a regulated marine refuge. Bacalar is about 211 km south of Tulum, roughly three hours by road. Holbox is car-free: golf carts, a crossing of 20 to 30 minutes from Chiquilá, whale sharks from June to September, and an island that has been evacuated for hurricanes, so the plan always includes the way off. Mérida and Chichén Itzá lie outside the state, which makes the work multi-state and requires a provider with federal authorisation. One brief carries on to Mexico City, Los Cabos and Miami.
Yacht charterThe calendar: from the Zamna season to hurricane season
Zamna Tulum’s tenth-anniversary season runs from 31 December 2026 to 10 January 2027, and Day Zero returns that January in the jungle outside Tulum. Those nights are late, remote and crowded, and the officers who know the venues are committed far earlier. Sargassum peaks from May to September: hotels with daily clearing differ sharply from public beaches, and the cenotes are the unaffected alternative. Hurricane Beryl came ashore near Tulum on 5 July 2024, and Tulum airport stayed shut until midday on 7 July. The lesson for June to November is a second airport and a second route, held from the start. Late November and early December bring the quieter weeks.
Travel and destination managementTulum and the Riviera Maya by season.
Zamna and Day Zero
Jungle venues and very late nights. Officers in rotation, the exit walked in daylight, and booking far earlier than usual.
Latin America Amateur Championship
The championship comes to El Camaleón at Mayakoba. Enclave liaison and clean hotel-to-course movement.
High season and Semana Santa
Long-haul flights from London, Madrid, Paris and Frankfurt land at Cancún. Highway 307 runs slower at Christmas and Easter.
LPGA Riviera Maya Open
The tournament returns to El Camaleón, and Mayakoba fills up as the sargassum begins.
Sargassum, whale sharks, rain
Sargassum at its heaviest, Tulum’s southern hotel zone worst hit, the cenotes clear, and Holbox has its whale sharks.
Hurricane season
Beryl shut Tulum airport for almost three days in July 2024. Every plan in these months names a second airport.
The brief, the officer, the arrival, the villa, the stay.
The brief, under NDA
Dates, profile, villa or hotel, the Zamna nights and whether you land at Tulum or Cancún, held under NDA.
The officer
Matched through an authorised Mexican company, in your language. You see the profile before anyone is deployed.
The arrival
Met at Tulum or Cancún, bags checked off, the car and the route already fixed. Highway 307 timed.
The villa
Assessed before you land, gate guard included.
The stay
Present where the risk sits: the car, the door, the evening. Invisible at the pool.
One contact
One coordinator for the officer, the driver, the Puerto Aventuras boat and the concierge side.
“On this coast the best detail looks like a friend of the house and a very good driver. Nobody remembers it, which is the point.”
What protection in Tulum and the Riviera Maya costs.
Close protection here starts from USD 750 per day for one officer on twelve-hour cover. A security driver, a soft-skin or armoured vehicle, the villa residence assessment, yacht days and event work are each quoted as their own line, one figure per line, confirmed before you pay. Multi-officer details sit above the base and are quoted to the brief.
Armed authorisation needs a minimum 30-day lead time and may be refused. You receive a written figure with no obligation, and where one security driver is the honest answer, that is the proposal you get. See what a bodyguard costs.
Why protection in the Riviera Maya must be licensed.
Private security is governed by the Federal Private Security Law. The Secretaría de Seguridad y Protección Ciudadana authorises work across states, and work confined to Quintana Roo falls under the state’s own regulations and its Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana. The provider must be an authorised Mexican company. That rules out bringing your own officer from abroad.
In 2020 a state police officer working as a private bodyguard shot two gunmen dead at a Tulum beach party. The state prosecutor said two police officers were illegally providing bodyguard services and opened an investigation. An unregistered guard has no authorisation and no company answerable for the work. See how our close protection works and bodyguard laws by country.
The moments that call for protection in Tulum.
Festival nights in the Zamna season. A villa week with children or a recognisable face. A wedding at Mayakoba or on the beach road. A yacht day. A late arrival into Cancún with a long drive south in the dark. Business visits to Playa del Carmen and Cancún.
A quiet couple at a hotel on the beach road in February may need a security driver for arrivals and evenings and nothing else. We would rather say so at the enquiry than sell you a detail you do not need.
Send the dates. We reply with the officer, the car and a figure.
Tell us the dates, the villa or hotel, the events and how you arrive. You receive a clear proposal and a final rate, confidential from the first message, with no obligation.
