The Greek calendar, read properly
Greece runs on a calendar worth knowing. Orthodox Easter opens the year with candlelit processions and long family tables. May and June bring warm sea and empty terraces; July and August are the full season, with the meltemi in the Aegean and the busiest fortnight around mid-August, when villas, berths and the best tables are decided months ahead. September is for many the finest month of all - the water at its warmest, the crowds gone - and winter belongs to Athens, its museums and its mild Riviera light.
