Can you hire a bodyguard in Puerto Vallarta?

Yes, through Mexican security companies authorised under the Federal Private Security Law. One bay holds two states, Jalisco and Nayarit, on one clock since 2010. So the detail is mostly the driver, the route and the gate, not a guard at your shoulder.

Algoz is a protection house that also runs the concierge side, so the officer, the car and the villa are one plan. Send the dates for a written proposal, with no obligation. The base is public: from USD 750 per day for one officer on twelve-hour cover.

  • Officers from authorised Mexican companies, vetted and under NDA before your name is shared
  • A security driver and a vetted vehicle for every movement, never a street taxi or an app
  • PVR arrivals met at the terminal exit or the FBO door, luggage counted, first route planned
  • The Punta Mita gate briefed and the villa walked before you arrive
  • The pier, the panga and the tender treated as routes, with the officer aboard
  • One contact in English or Spanish, from the Zona Romántica to Sayulita and onward
Straight Answers

Hiring a bodyguard in Puerto Vallarta: the questions people ask first.

Legality

Is it legal?

Yes, through a Mexican company authorised under the Federal Private Security Law. A detail that crosses the Ameca river works in two states, and that needs federal authorisation.

Cost

What it costs

From USD 750 per day for one officer on twelve-hour cover. Drivers, vehicles and boats are priced line by line below.

Speed

How much notice we need

We ask for at least seven days. Shorter notice is looked at case by case; under 48 hours carries an urgency fee and is not guaranteed.

Weapons

Armed or unarmed

Armed protection exists in Mexico only through Mexican companies holding a collective firearms licence from the defence ministry. It needs a minimum 30-day lead time for authorisation and may be refused, and we will not pretend otherwise. For most visits a low-profile, well-driven detail is the better answer.

Coverage

Where we cover

Marina Vallarta to Conchas Chinas, then Nuevo Nayarit, Bucerías, La Cruz, Punta Mita, Sayulita and San Pancho, the south shore by boat, and onward to Guadalajara, Los Cabos and Mexico City.

Language

Who you get

Vetted officers with police, military or federal service backgrounds, with English-speaking and female officers on request, confirmed before deployment.

What We Provide

Bodyguard services in Puerto Vallarta and Punta Mita.

Officers

Authorised officers

Officers from registered Mexican companies who read as an assistant, not a guard, and are absent where they are not needed.

Driving

Security drivers

The most useful purchase on this bay: a trained driver who knows the coast road, the new autopista and the right gate. See what a security driver costs.

Aviation

PVR and the FBOs

The meet at the terminal exit or the FBO door, with the car waiting.

Villas

Villas and resorts

Punta Mita estates, the hillside houses of Conchas Chinas and the resort suites: staff, vendors and the beach side nobody locks.

Water

Yachts and pangas

An officer on the tender and at the quay, at Marina Vallarta, Paradise Village or La Cruz, coordinated with the captain.

Events

Weddings and festivals

Punta Mita resorts, villa estates and Las Caletas by boat, with the guest list, the vendors and the exit planned first. See destination weddings.

Two states, one bay: from the Zona Romántica to Punta Mita

The bay changes at the Ameca river. South of it, in Jalisco, lie Marina Vallarta and the Hotel Zone by the airport, Centro and the Malecón, the Zona Romántica around Los Muertos pier, the city’s gay-friendly district and its most walkable evening, and the villas of Conchas Chinas. North of it, in Nayarit, come Nuevo Nayarit, still widely called Nuevo Vallarta, then Bucerías, La Cruz and the gates of Punta Mita: about 1,500 acres of gated communities, with the Four Seasons and the St. Regis inside. Litibú, Sayulita and San Pancho lie further up the coast. In the south the work is the pavement and the doorway. In the north it is the road, the gate and the villa staff.

Villas and private residences

PVR, the FBO and the first forty-five minutes

Commercial flights land at Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International, PVR, where a new terminal is under construction. Private aircraft use the general aviation terminal and its two FBOs, Aerotron and Affinity Aviation (formerly Universal Aviation), the latter with immigration and customs inside. The officer waits at the terminal exit or the FBO door, because a private officer does not bypass immigration or screening. The luggage is counted, the vetted car is waiting, and the run north through Bucerías to Punta Mita takes about 45 minutes, with the gate briefed on your name and vehicle. The first transfer is never a street taxi or an app, and it always has an alternate.

The risk picture, honestly: two states and one February

In its advisory of 29 May 2026 the United States rates Jalisco at Level 3 and Nayarit at Level 2, and says conditions can vary from state to state and even within a state. The British FCDO’s advise-against list names inland Jalisco municipalities, not Puerto Vallarta. It also warns of assaults on travellers in Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta, in some cases involving hotel employees, taxi drivers and security personnel, which is the plain argument for vetting. The day everyone asks about is 22 February 2026. A federal operation in Tapalpa killed the leader of the Jalisco New Generation cartel. More than ten vehicles burned in Puerto Vallarta, transport stopped, hotels kept guests inside and flights were diverted or cancelled. No new roadblocks were reported after midnight on 23 February, most international carriers returned from the 24th, and the US lifted its shelter advice that day while keeping a night curfew on its own staff until late on the 25th. In INEGI’s ENSU survey, adults in the city who feel unsafe went from 32.0% in December 2025 to 59.9% in March 2026, 65.4% in June and 53.6% in September, against 58.1% nationally. Perception has eased and has not returned to where it was. So every plan carries an alternate for every route and a hold plan at the hotel or villa.

How a Puerto Vallarta detail is run: the driver first, the officer second

It starts with the diary, never with a headcount. Under NDA we read the dates, the villa, the boats and the evenings, then propose the smallest team that covers the brief. If a security driver alone covers it, we say so: see executive transportation. The villa is walked before arrival: the staff, the vendors, the beach side. The table is chosen with the exit in mind and the boat is held at the pier. The medical plan is written in advance: CMQ runs three hospitals around the bay, in the city centre, at CMQ Premiere and in Bucerías, and complex cases may need transfer to Guadalajara or by air. You keep one contact for the whole stay.

How close protection works

Beyond the bay: Sayulita, San Pancho, Yelapa and the Marietas

Every day trip is its own protection problem. Sayulita is narrow lanes and a surf crowd, so the car is held where it can leave; San Pancho is the quieter end of the same road. Yelapa has no road a visiting car would use: you arrive by water, from Boca de Tomatlán or Los Muertos pier, and the officer is on the boat. Las Caletas is reached only on its operator’s boats. On the Islas Marietas, landings are restricted and run through permitted operators. Yachts berth at Marina Vallarta, Paradise Village and Marina Riviera Nayarit at La Cruz, which takes vessels to 400 ft. Guadalajara is officially about two and a half hours by the new autopista, closer to four in real traffic, and the British advise-against list touches inland municipalities along the way. So road legs are checked close to the day and may be replaced by a flight. The same brief continues to Mexico City or Miami.

The calendar: whales in December, Pride in May, Catrinas at the end of October

The year here is a booking map. Humpbacks reach the bay from November and the whale-watching season runs from December to March, across the Christmas peak at the Punta Mita resorts. Vallarta Pride comes in May, centred on the Zona Romántica, and its organisers reported more than 40,000 visitors in 2026. The rains run from mid-June to mid-October and the Pacific hurricane season from 15 May to 30 November, with the worst local landfalls in October. Lidia came ashore just south of the city on 10 October 2023 as a Category 4, and the airport closed. From late October to 2 November the Day of the Dead fills the Malecón with monumental Catrinas. For the peak weeks, ask earlier.

Step 03

The provider

An authorised Mexican company, its authorisation checked for work across both states. You see the officer’s profile before deployment.

The car and the arrival

The driver, the vehicle, the meet at PVR or the FBO, the first route and its alternate.

Step 05

The villa and the gate

The gate briefed, the staff and vendors understood, the beach side walked, the hold plan agreed.

Step 06

One contact

One coordinator for officers, drivers, boats and the concierge side, in English or Spanish, until you leave.

Excellence, Discreetly Delivered

“On this bay the gate is a filter, not a plan. The plan is the driver, the route and the hour you leave.”

What a bodyguard costs in Puerto Vallarta.

Close protection on the bay starts from USD 750 per day for one officer on twelve-hour cover. A security driver, an armoured or soft-skin vehicle, a boat and a tender are each quoted as its own line, one figure per line, confirmed before you pay. Multi-officer details sit above the base and are quoted to the brief.

Armed cover sits above the base, needs a minimum 30-day lead time for authorisation and may be refused. Further reading: what a bodyguard costs and bodyguard rates in US dollars.

Mexican Legal Framework

Why protection on the bay must be licensed.

Private security in Mexico is governed by the Federal Private Security Law of 2006. Protecting a person is a licensed modality (article 15-I), the provider must be Mexican (article 25-I), and work in two or more states needs prior federal authorisation (article 16). A detail from PVR to Punta Mita crosses from Jalisco into Nayarit, so one state’s registration is not enough for this bay.

Before any officer is armed, the company needs a collective firearms licence from the defence ministry (article 24). A foreign officer cannot work a detail or carry a weapon in Mexico. Algoz coordinates only inside this framework. See how our close protection works, bodyguard laws by country and multi-city travel management.

When to Hire

The moments that call for protection on the bay.

Villa weeks at Punta Mita and Conchas Chinas. Weddings at the resorts or at Las Caletas by boat. Yacht weeks, and the crowds of Pride and the Day of the Dead.

Executives on a short visit need the arrival and the dinners. If your stay is one hotel and no evenings out, a security driver alone may be the honest answer, and we will say so.

Good to Know

Bodyguard in Puerto Vallarta: frequently asked questions

How much does a bodyguard in Puerto Vallarta cost?

From USD 750 per day for one officer on twelve-hour cover. Drivers, vehicles and boats are separate lines, confirmed before you pay. Armed cover and larger details sit above the base.

Is it legal to hire a bodyguard in Puerto Vallarta and Punta Mita, and who authorises the company?

Yes, through a Mexican company under the Federal Private Security Law. Work in two or more states needs prior authorisation from the federal public security ministry, and a detail from Puerto Vallarta in Jalisco to Punta Mita in Nayarit is a two-state service. One state's registration is not enough for this bay. A foreign officer cannot work a detail or carry a weapon in Mexico.

Can my bodyguard be armed in Puerto Vallarta?

Only through a Mexican company holding a collective firearms licence from the defence ministry. It needs a minimum 30-day lead time for authorisation, may be refused and costs more. For most visits to the bay a low-profile, well-driven detail is the better answer, and we say so.

How much notice do you need for a bodyguard in Puerto Vallarta?

We ask for at least seven days. Shorter notice is looked at case by case; under 48 hours carries an urgency fee and is not guaranteed. For Christmas to New Year, Pride week and the Day of the Dead, ask earlier.

Is Puerto Vallarta safe for a high-profile visitor right now, and what happened in February 2026?

We give no verdict, because the honest answer has two halves. The everyday risks are tied to movement: unlicensed taxis, visible valuables, predictable routes. On 22 February 2026 a federal operation in Tapalpa killed the leader of the Jalisco New Generation cartel; more than ten vehicles burned in Puerto Vallarta, transport stopped and flights were diverted or cancelled. Within days the roadblocks had stopped and airlines were flying again. In September 2026, 53.6% of adults in the city told INEGI they felt unsafe, against 58.1% nationally. We plan for both halves.

Is Punta Mita safe, and does a gated villa still need an officer?

Punta Mita is a private, gated peninsula in Nayarit, and a gate is not a verdict: burning roadblocks reached Nayarit on 22 February 2026 and schools there closed the next day. The gate filters who enters. It does nothing about the airport road, the staff inside or the beach side. If a security driver and a walked villa cover your week, we say so.

Is the Riviera Nayarit side of the bay safer than the Jalisco side?

We do not call either side safer. In its advisory of 29 May 2026 the United States rates Jalisco at Level 3 and Nayarit at Level 2, and says conditions can vary from state to state and even within a state. This bay is two states and one set of roads. The events of February 2026 reached both sides, schools closed in both states, and the FCDO names Nuevo Vallarta beside Puerto Vallarta in its warning on assaults against British travellers. We plan by route and by hour, not by state line.

Can you meet us at Puerto Vallarta airport, including the private jet FBO, and drive us to Punta Mita?

Yes. The officer waits at the terminal exit or at the door of the FBO, Aerotron or Affinity Aviation; a private officer does not bypass immigration or screening. The vetted car is waiting, and the drive to Punta Mita takes about 45 minutes, with the gate briefed in advance.

Do I need an armoured car in Puerto Vallarta?

Not always, and we say so plainly. For many stays a vetted security driver in a soft-skin vehicle is the proportionate answer. Armour makes sense for a recognisable principal, longer road legs or repeated routines. It is quoted as its own line, because an armoured car driven badly protects nobody.

Can you cover Sayulita, San Pancho, Yelapa and a day on the Islas Marietas?

Yes. Sayulita and San Pancho lie further up the coast by road. Yelapa has no road a visiting car would use, so the officer travels with you by boat. On the Islas Marietas, landings are restricted and run through permitted operators, so a place is confirmed first.

Can the officer work on our yacht in Banderas Bay and during whale season?

Yes. The officer works the tender and the quay, coordinated with the captain. Whale-watching season runs from December to March.

Do you cover Day of the Dead, Vallarta Pride and the Festival Gourmet?

Yes. The Day of the Dead runs from late October to 2 November, Vallarta Pride comes in May and Festival Gourmet in November. Crowds close streets, so the driver holds a clear exit and the officer stays close.

Is Puerto Vallarta a good choice for a family or a wedding, and can you protect both?

Yes to the protection, and the choice is yours. For families we plan the airport, the beach club and the boat day around the children. Weddings take place at the Punta Mita resorts, at villa estates or at Las Caletas, reached only by boat, and a protected wedding does not look protected.

Do you have female officers and officers who speak English?

On request, yes. Officers who work in English and Spanish, and female officers for family movement, women travelling alone or anyone who prefers them, are requested with the brief and confirmed before deployment.

Why use Algoz rather than hiring a Puerto Vallarta security company directly?

Because from abroad there is no reliable way to tell a properly authorised, well-run firm from one that only claims to be. In September 2026 Jalisco counted 289 registered companies, only 35 of them licensed to arm their staff. Algoz selects the provider, checks its authorisation for both states, places every officer under NDA and supervises the detail, with one contact for protection and concierge alike.

I am an executive assistant or family office booking for a principal. How does that work?

You brief once and keep one contact. You receive a written proposal, then under NDA the officer and driver profiles, the vehicle specification and one number for changes. Nothing about the principal is shared beyond what the work requires. We do not name clients and we never will.

A Trusted Single Point of Contact

Principals and the people who plan for them - executive assistants, personal assistants, chiefs of staff, family offices and the agencies and producers who book on a client’s behalf - brief Algoz once and we coordinate the rest. Every detail in Puerto Vallarta is delivered by accredited, locally licensed close protection officers (male and female), armoured transport where the threat picture warrants it, and 24/7 operations - coordinated and quality-controlled by Algoz under NDA. UHNWI and HNWI principals, royal and family offices, executives, celebrities and public figures rely on Algoz as a credible, trustworthy first call.
