Bodyguard in Cancun
Can you hire a bodyguard in Cancun?
Yes, through Mexican security companies authorised federally or by Quintana Roo. A foreign officer cannot work a detail or carry a firearm here. Algoz is a protection house that also runs the concierge side: one contact answers for the officer, the driver and the stay.
Cancun runs along one boulevard with a lagoon behind it, so routes are predictable, and its record since 2021 includes gang shootings that caught bystanders. Both are planning problems. Send the dates for a written proposal, with no obligation, from USD 750 per day for one officer on twelve-hour cover.
- Officers from authorised Mexican companies, vetted and under NDA
- Arrivals met in the hall or at the general aviation terminal, the vehicle pre-booked
- The Hotel Zone read by kilometre marker, the Nichupté bridge used in its open hours
- Evenings at Punta Cancun timed to leave before the clubs empty
- An officer on the tender for Isla Mujeres and the yacht day
- One contact in English or Spanish, from Costa Mujeres to Tulum and onward
Hiring a bodyguard in Cancun: the questions people ask first.
Is it legal to hire a bodyguard in Cancun?
Yes, through authorised Mexican companies only, with state or federal authorisation. Quintana Roo reserves the service to Mexican citizens and companies, so a foreign officer cannot work a detail.
What a bodyguard costs in Cancun
From USD 750 per day for one officer on twelve-hour cover. A security driver, an armoured vehicle and a boat day are each quoted as its own line, one figure per line, confirmed before you pay.
How much notice we need
We ask for at least seven days. Shorter notice is looked at case by case; under 48 hours carries an urgency fee and is not guaranteed. Christmas to New Year and spring break book out far earlier.
Armed or unarmed
Armed protection exists in Mexico only through Mexican companies holding a collective firearms licence from the defence ministry. It needs a minimum 30-day lead time for authorisation and may be refused. For most Cancun visits a low-profile, well-driven detail is the better answer.
Where we cover
The Hotel Zone, Puerto Cancun, downtown, Costa Mujeres, Isla Mujeres and Puerto Morelos, then Playa del Carmen and Tulum on the road south, and the rest of Mexico under the same brief.
Who your officer is
Vetted Mexican officers with police, military or federal service backgrounds, working in Spanish and English, with female officers on request.

Authorised Mexican officers
Officers from authorised companies, vetted by the house and under NDA before your name is shared. Close where the risk sits, absent where they are not needed.
Security drivers
In a city of one boulevard, the driver is the plan: the hour to leave, the right hotel entrance, the moment not to stop. See executive transportation.
Airport and private aviation
The meet in the terminal or at the general aviation building, the luggage counted, the pre-booked vehicle waiting. See private jet charter.
Resorts and villas
Liaison with the hotel’s security team, floor and beach plans understood, the villa walked first. See villas and property rental.
Boats and islands
An officer on the tender and at the quay, the captain briefed, the crossing to Isla Mujeres planned as a movement. See yacht charter.
Weddings and families
A protected wedding at a Costa Mujeres resort, a family fortnight, female officers where preferred. See destination weddings and female travel protection.
The Hotel Zone: one boulevard, 22.5 kilometres and a lagoon behind it
The Zona Hotelera is a strip shaped like the number 7, with the Caribbean on one side, the Nichupté Lagoon on the other and more than 190 hotels between. Boulevard Kukulcán runs through it from km 0 downtown to the low twenties at Punta Nizuc, and every address is a number on that road. Puerto Cancun and SLS Cancun sit at the northern mouth; Punta Cancun and its clubs at about km 9; then the grand hotels, from Le Blanc and Live Aqua to the Kempinski, the JW Marriott at km 14.5 and NIZUC at Punta Nizuc. One road makes every movement predictable, and that is the protective problem. The Puente Nichupté, 8.8 kilometres over the lagoon to about km 13, was inaugurated on 2 May 2026 and has carried traffic since 6 May. It adds a mid-strip crossing to the boulevard’s two ends, but it closes overnight and its reversible lane changes direction in the afternoon: a tool for certain hours, not a standing alternate. The work is timing: leaving before the peak, holding the car at the right door, briefing the resort’s security team. What the road cannot do, a boat can.
Executive transportation and security driversArriving at Cancun International: the kerb, the private terminal and the train
Cancun International works through Terminals 2, 3 and 4. Terminal 1 is being rebuilt, so we confirm the terminal with the flight. Private aircraft use a separate general aviation terminal with customs on site. The practical question is who may collect you. The federal transport ministry’s position, stated on 30 October 2025, is that ride apps have no authorisation to collect inside Mexican airports, which Uber contests. The kerb itself is held by concession taxis, pre-booked transfers and authorised tourism transport, and a private car can be caught in that dispute: in July 2023 two taxi drivers were arrested after attacking a Suburban of foreign tourists mistaken for Uber. So your vehicle is pre-booked through an operator authorised to collect at the airport, your driver vetted, the officer in the hall and the transfer timed: about 12 kilometres to Punta Nizuc, about 25 to Punta Cancun, about 30 kilometres and 45 minutes to Costa Mujeres. The Tren Maya station is a shuttle ride from the terminals.
Private jet charter to CancunThe risk picture, honestly: gangs, taxis, nightlife and routine
The US State Department rates Quintana Roo at Level 2 and asks for extra care after dark in downtown Cancun, Tulum and Playa del Carmen. The British FCDO records assaults on travellers, in some cases with hotel, taxi or security staff involved, as well as drink spiking and taxi protests that have pulled tourists from Uber cars. It says rival gangs have clashed in tourist areas without targeting tourists, and that anyone nearby can be caught. Canada adds express kidnapping in large cities and illegal highway roadblocks. The record: Playa Tortugas in June 2021, a Puerto Morelos beachfront that November, Playa Caracol in 2024, where stray fire killed a child, and central Playa del Carmen in June 2026. On 22 February 2026, after the killing of the Jalisco cartel’s leader, the US Embassy told citizens in the state to shelter in place; a day later it said the state had returned to normal. Against that, the federal government reported on 24 March 2026 that the state’s daily homicide average fell from 2.0 to 0.4 between September 2024 and February 2026, and the local paper Por Esto disputes the counts. Where you stand, whose car you are in and when you leave can be planned. We plan them, and we promise no more than that.
Bodyguard across MexicoHow a Cancun detail is actually run
It starts with the diary, never with a headcount. We propose the smallest team that covers the brief: often a security driver alone, usually one officer with a driver, two vehicles for higher profiles or long days south. The hotel’s security team is briefed before the officer arrives. The table at Punta Cancun is chosen for its exit, the nightlife call is made before the bars empty, and on a boat day the officer is on the tender. Every officer works under Mexican authorisation and signs an NDA, and one Algoz contact stays from proposal to departure. The main private hospitals, Galenia on Avenida Tulum and Hospiten on Avenida Bonampak, sit downtown, so the route to each is settled before anyone needs it. If the brief does not need an officer, we say so.
How close protection worksBeyond the strip: Isla Mujeres, Costa Mujeres, Puerto Morelos and the road south
Isla Mujeres lies 13 kilometres off the coast, seven long and barely 650 metres wide, moved around by golf cart. The Ultramar crossing from Gran Puerto is short and carries foot passengers only, so the car stays ashore and the officer crosses with you. Costa Mujeres, about 30 kilometres north of the airport, is a coast of gated resorts. Puerto Morelos, 36 kilometres south of Cancun, keeps a national marine park on a reef close offshore and has its own Tren Maya station. Four-lane Highway 307 then runs to Playa del Carmen, about 55 kilometres from the airport, and on to Tulum, about 120 to 130 kilometres and roughly two hours.
Bodyguard in Tulum and the Riviera MayaThe Cancun calendar: high season, spring break, hurricanes and sargassum
High season runs from December to April. Spring break arrives in late February and concentrates in March and early April: about 27,000 students were expected in 2026, against up to 120,000 a season in the 2000s. Holy Week falls inside it in 2027, with Easter on 28 March. The Atlantic hurricane season lasts from 1 June to 30 November and peaks around 10 September. Wilma came ashore near Puerto Morelos in October 2005 and left 110 Cancun hotels destroyed or badly damaged; when a watch is posted, the detail already holds the exit plan. Sargassum usually builds from March or April, peaks in June and July and falls away by October, though in 2026 it reached Isla Mujeres in January. The north-facing arm of the Hotel Zone and Playa Norte suffer least.

The peak falls around 10 September. Beryl came ashore near Tulum on 5 July 2024. The detail carries the storm plan and the exit.
The quiet weeks
The wettest, least crowded weeks of the year, with the lightest traffic.
The reset
Clean beaches return and the Day of the Dead falls on 1 and 2 November.

What a bodyguard costs in Cancun.
Close protection in Cancun starts from USD 750 per day for one officer on twelve-hour cover. A security driver, an armoured vehicle, a boat day, flights and hotels are each quoted as its own line, one figure per line, confirmed before you pay. Larger details and peak weeks are quoted to the brief.
Armed cover sits above the base, needs a minimum 30-day lead time for authorisation, may be refused and is rarely the better answer here. See what a bodyguard costs and how a security driver works.
Why protection in Cancun must be licensed.
Private security rests on the Federal Private Security Law of 2006. A company working in two or more states is authorised by the Secretaría de Seguridad y Protección Ciudadana and must also register with Quintana Roo; one working only in the state is authorised by its Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana, under the Citizen Security Law of 2023 and a regulation of 2005. Authorisations run for one year.
Quintana Roo reserves the service to Mexican citizens and to Mexican companies that exclude foreign partners (Citizen Security Law, Article 101). Weapons exist only under a collective licence from the Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional, under the Federal Firearms and Explosives Law as reformed in May 2025. A foreign officer cannot work a detail or carry a weapon here. See how our close protection works, bodyguard laws by country and travel and destination management.
The moments that call for protection in Cancun.
The arrival and the first transfer. The nightlife evening at Punta Cancun or downtown. A villa or wedding week at Costa Mujeres or Puerto Morelos. A yacht day to Isla Mujeres. The road to Tulum. A family fortnight with the routine managed by someone else.
Business travel is the quiet majority, conferences at the Cancun Center included, and there the value is in the car and the route. For one hotel and one dinner, a security driver alone is often the honest answer.
Send the dates.
Tell us the dates, the resort or villa and how you arrive. You receive a written proposal, one figure per line, with no obligation. Officer and driver profiles and the routes follow once the engagement is confirmed and under NDA.
