Bodyguard in Costa Rica
Can you hire a bodyguard in Costa Rica?
Yes. Private security is regulated under Ley 8395, and agents are registered and credentialed through the Ministry of Public Security. We do not fly in an officer to work a detail here. The detail is run by locally registered agents, and the house arranges and supervises it through one contact.
For most visitors the likeliest harm is the road, the surf or a car break-in. The violent risk is real, and it is planned for. Send the dates for a written proposal, from USD 750 per day for one officer on twelve-hour cover.
- Locally registered agents, vetted and under NDA before your name is shared
- The arrival as a sequence at Juan Santamaría or Liberia, luggage counted, car waiting
- A security driver and a 4x4 where the road needs one, in daylight where the day allows
- The villa walked before you arrive: gates, staff, vendors and the beach door
- The small plane booked around the baggage rule, not around the brochure
- One contact from the Central Valley to the Pacific, in English or Spanish
Hiring a bodyguard in Costa Rica: the questions people ask first.
Is it legal to hire a bodyguard in Costa Rica?
Yes, under Ley 8395, which regulates private security for persons and property through the Ministerio de Seguridad Pública. The legal framework is set out further down.
What a bodyguard costs in Costa Rica
From USD 750 per day for one officer on twelve-hour cover. The security driver, the 4x4, flights and the villa are each quoted as its own line, one figure per line, confirmed before you pay.
How much notice we need
We ask for at least seven days. Shorter notice is looked at case by case; under 48 hours carries an urgency fee and is not guaranteed. Christmas, New Year and Semana Santa book out far earlier.
Armed or unarmed
Unarmed and low profile is the standard. Armed cover is arranged only where the law allows it for licensed local agents, on request. It needs a minimum 30-day lead time for authorisation, may be refused and costs more, and it is rarely the right answer.
Where we cover
San José, Escazú and Santa Ana; Guanacaste from Papagayo to Nosara; the rest of the Nicoya; the Central Pacific; Arenal and Monteverde; the Osa; and the Caribbean, planned with care.
Who your officer is
Vetted Costa Rican agents working in Spanish and English, with female officers on request, subject to availability. Costa Rica abolished its army in 1948, so the background that matters here is police or public security.
Bodyguard services in Costa Rica.
Locally registered agents
Agents who read as an assistant rather than a guard, and are absent where they are not needed.
Security drivers and the 4x4
A driver who knows the ford matters more here than an armoured car: rivers, unpaved stretches and San José’s plate days. See executive transportation.
Villas and residences
Gates, staff and vendor routines, the beach access nobody locks, and an overnight presence where the brief needs it. The villa walked, not the gate locked.
Airports and small planes
The meet inside the terminal, the general aviation apron for private flights, the small plane chosen with your luggage in mind. See private jet charter.
Weddings and retreats
A wedding on the Guanacaste coast, a surf or wellness group on a remote beach, the road home after dark. See destination weddings.
The quay and the concierge side
An officer at the quay at Marina Papagayo, Los Sueños or Marina Pez Vela, with tables and lodges under the same brief. See yacht charter.
Arriving: Juan Santamaría, Liberia and the small planes
Juan Santamaría (SJO), about 20 km from San José, handled 6.7 million passengers in 2025, with Iberia from Madrid, British Airways in season and the main US carriers. Guanacaste Airport at Liberia (LIR) took 1.9 million in 2024, direct from Toronto, New York, Houston and Los Angeles, and lists a VIP lounge and premium access. Tobías Bolaños in Pavas is a visual-flight field for air taxis and small charters, not most jets. Sansa allows 4.5 kg free as a personal item, may charge up to 6.8 kg and checks anything heavier; other operators set their own limits. The first transfer is the exposed one: the agent inside the terminal, the luggage counted, the vetted driver waiting, and never a hailed taxi.
Private jet charterSan José, Escazú and Santa Ana: the capital’s western belt
For a working visit, the western belt comes first. Escazú, at 1,129 metres, holds several diplomatic missions and the US Ambassador’s residence. Santa Ana, next door, ranked first among the cantons on the UNDP human development index for 2022. The centre is for the Teatro Nacional, Barrio Amón, the Museo del Oro and Hotel Grano de Oro, 25 minutes from the airport. Canada names the inner downtown, the Coca-Cola bus terminal, the Mercado Central area and the public parks as high risk for theft. The Teatro and the Museo del Oro sit inside that inner downtown, so they are reached by car, door to door, and nobody walks between them. Each number plate is barred from central San José on one set weekday, which is the driver’s problem, not yours. Clínica Bíblica, JCI accredited, and Hospital CIMA San José are written into the plan.
Close protection with AlgozThe risk picture, honestly: the ports, the beach and the road
Costa Rica recorded 907 homicides in 2023, about 17 per 100,000, the highest in its history at that point. InSight Crime counted 16.8 for 2025, roughly level with the year before. That is higher than the United States and below Mexico and Colombia, driven by gang disputes over ports and drug markets, and heaviest in Limón, with Alajuela, Puntarenas and San José provinces also named by Canada. The British Foreign Office (FCDO) adds that shootings are more frequent in urban areas and that some sexual assaults appear targeted at tourists. What a visitor more often meets is smaller. Canada calls rental and luxury vehicles “a target of choice”, and the FCDO warns of thieves who slash a tyre and then offer to help. Canada’s theft list takes in Jacó, Manuel Antonio, Quepos, Puerto Viejo, Limón and the Cóbano area, which includes Santa Teresa. Then the physical risks: one of the world’s highest road accident rates by Canada’s reckoning, rip currents with few lifeguards, and drownings, the FCDO’s second most common cause of accidental death, about a third of the victims tourists.
Executive transportationBeyond the capital: Guanacaste to the Osa and the Caribbean
Nekajui, the Ritz-Carlton Reserve on Peninsula Papagayo, is 35 km from Liberia airport, and the peninsula holds the Four Seasons and Andaz beside Marina Papagayo, where a yacht charter gets an officer on the tender. Tamarindo is about an hour from Liberia. Nosara lies among the last large stretches of unpaved road in the country. Santa Teresa is a small plane to Cóbano, or a long road journey with the Paquera ferry. Jacó and Los Sueños are about an hour and a half from SJO. Manuel Antonio and Quepos lie further down the same coast, with Marina Pez Vela at Quepos. Arenal rises to 1,633 metres above La Fortuna; Monteverde is roughly four hours from the Central Valley, with difficult access. Corcovado, 424 square kilometres and about a third of the Osa, requires certified guides. Drake Bay is best reached by small plane or boat: the road means river crossings without bridges, and only in the dry season. Limón province carries the country’s narcotics violence, and we cover Puerto Viejo with our eyes open.
Multi-stop travel managementHow a Costa Rica detail is planned
It starts with the itinerary, never with a headcount. A typical plan is one locally registered agent with a security driver in a 4x4, and a second officer where a villa, a wedding or a public profile needs one. For a surf week in Santa Teresa a full-time officer may be more than you need, and a driver with a residence check may be the answer. Long drives run in daylight with the alternate known: Route 32 through Braulio Carrillo has fog and, in the rains, landslides. The medical plan is written down, with 911, Clínica Bíblica’s round-the-clock urgent care at Liberia, and an honest note that ambulance services in remote areas vary.
How close protection worksThe calendar: dry season, Semana Santa and the green months
The dry season runs from December to April, and the rains from May to November. Christmas, New Year and Semana Santa, from 21 to 28 March 2027, book out far earlier. On holiday return days, traffic on Route 27 runs mostly towards the capital. The Los Sueños Triple Crown brings three tournament legs to the Central Pacific from January to April 2027. September and October are the wettest months in San José and Liberia and the driest on the Caribbean. Uvita has two whale seasons, mid-year and over the northern winter. The hurricane season usually runs from June to November, and Poás has closed for long periods after eruptions, so its status is checked first.
Destination weddingsWhen protection in Costa Rica earns its day.
The dry season peak
Little rain in Guanacaste and the wedding season on the coast.
Semana Santa
Much of the country heads for the beach, and the road home is part of the plan.
Los Sueños Triple Crown
Three billfish legs on the Central Pacific: 18 to 23 January, 22 to 27 February and 29 March to 3 April.
The Guanacaste holiday
25 July is the Guanacaste holiday, and rainfall dips at San José and Liberia in the veranillo: a good window for the north.
Wettest on the Pacific
High rivers on the Nicoya and the Osa. Independence on 15 September; Limón Carnival in the second week of October.
The turn
The Pacific dries first, though November is still wet, and the Caribbean turns wettest, so Route 32 through Braulio Carrillo is checked before every crossing.
The brief, the agent, the road, the stay.
The brief, under NDA
Dates, places, profile, villas or hotels and how you arrive, held under NDA from the first message.
The agent
A locally registered agent matched to the brief, the credential checked, the profile shown to you before deployment.
The arrival
The meet inside at SJO or Liberia, the luggage counted, the vetted driver and the first route with its alternate.
The villa
Gates, staff, vendors and the beach door walked before you arrive, and the medical plan written.
The road
Long legs in daylight, rivers and weather read on the day, the small plane booked to its baggage rule.
One contact
One coordinator in English or Spanish, until you leave the country.
“In Costa Rica the danger is as likely to be the river as the road. The detail is a driver who knows the ford and an officer who disappears at dinner.”
What protection in Costa Rica costs.
Close protection in Costa Rica starts from USD 750 per day for one officer on twelve-hour cover. The security driver and 4x4, the small plane or the charter, the villa and a second officer are each quoted as its own line, one figure per line, confirmed before you pay.
Armed cover sits above the base, needs a minimum 30-day lead time for authorisation and may be refused. For a typical itinerary here, one agent with a security driver is the honest answer, and we will say so. Further reading: what a bodyguard costs and our close protection pricing guide.
Why protection in Costa Rica must be licensed.
Private security is governed by Ley 8395, the Ley de Servicios de Seguridad Privados, and its regulation. The regulator is the Dirección de Servicios de Seguridad Privados of the Ministerio de Seguridad Pública, which supervises companies and agents and runs sanction procedures. An unregistered individual sits outside its oversight.
Firearms fall under Ley 7530, the Ley de Armas y Explosivos. A carry permit depends on the Ministry’s mental fitness opinion, a fingerprint record and a theory and practical exam. Algoz coordinates only inside this framework. See our close protection service and bodyguard laws by country.
The moments that call for protection in Costa Rica.
The arrival and the first long transfer. The villa week, with its gates, staff and beach door. The destination wedding, the surf or wellness retreat, the family with children near rip currents, and the property visit with the lawyer and the bank.
Then the quieter case: a board visit in Escazú, where the value is the driver and the route. If a driver and a residence check will do, we say so.
Send the dates and the places.
Tell us the dates, the villa or hotel and how you arrive. You receive a written proposal, one figure per line, with no obligation. Agent and driver profiles and the routes follow once the engagement is confirmed and under NDA.

The villa week
A rented villa in Guanacaste, a plan for children near rip currents and wildlife, and female officers where the family prefers them.
The destination wedding
Guest arrivals, the venue walked and the road home after the reception. A protected wedding does not look protected.
Surf and wellness groups
Nosara, Santa Teresa and Pavones: a residence check, a driver and the nearest clinic named in advance.
Retirees and property buyers
The lawyer’s office, the bank, the site visit on an unpaved road and a residence assessment before you commit.
Papagayo, Los Sueños, Pez Vela
An officer on the tender and at the quay, and dinners ashore planned with the captain.
The board visit in Escazú
The hotel, the office and the airport, where the value is the driver and the route. A security driver alone may be enough.
