Antarctica is a season, a permit and a very short list of berths.

An Antarctica luxury expedition sails from about November to March, and about 98 percent of voyages go to the Antarctic Peninsula. Seven states claim sectors of the continent and the Antarctic Treaty settles none of those claims, so a voyage needs authorisation under national law, usually from the operator's own country or the vessel's flag state. Peak cabins and yacht weeks go far ahead.

Algoz is a protection house that runs concierge. We arrange the journey on one contact, through our Swiss travel partner house and the operators and yachts that run the voyages. Send the season and the party: one written proposal, one figure per line, our team under NDA from the first message.

  • One coordinator for the whole journey, from the first city to the last
  • The yacht or the ship chosen for the party, with the trade-offs stated
  • The Drake or the flight decided with you, on the facts
  • Buenos Aires or Santiago and Ushuaia or Punta Arenas under one plan
  • Medical conditions raised with the operator and insurance that names Antarctica, before booking
  • A protection officer where the operator accepts one, unarmed, the berth as its own line
Straight Answers

An Antarctica luxury expedition: the first questions.

What it is

What a luxury expedition really is

A small ship or a yacht, Zodiacs to shore, an expedition team and a plan that changes with the ice. Luxury means a better cabin and fewer people ashore. It does not mean the weather obeys.

Cost

What it costs

There is no honest single figure. Vessel, season and route decide it, and the proposal prices each element on its own line.

Lead time

How far ahead to book

An expedition is booked far ahead: peak cabins and yacht weeks go months before the season. For a late cabin or a city leg, we ask for at least seven days. Under 48 hours carries an urgency fee and is not guaranteed.

Choice

Yacht or top suite

A ship brings a doctor and a shared shore plan. A yacht brings privacy and a plan made around you. The ice and the rules are the same for both.

Security

Whether an officer is needed

Not for the ice itself. UK travel advice records no history of crime in the British Antarctic Territory. The realistic risks are weather, ice, distance and, on a shared ship, other guests' cameras.

Medical

If someone falls ill

Care is basic and help is far away: UK advice says rescue may take several days. Discuss conditions with the operator before booking, and carry insurance that names Antarctica.

What We Arrange

One journey, from the first city to the last.

Ships

Top Suites on Polar Class Ships

Silver Endeavour, Polar Class 6, 220 guests. Seabourn Venture and Scenic Eclipse, Polar Class 6. National Geographic Endurance, Polar Class 5, 138 guests. We name what exists. Which suite is free is confirmed voyage by voyage.

Yachts

Private Expedition Yachts

Hanse Explorer, 47.76 m, ice class hull, 12 guests. La Datcha, 77 m, Ice Class and IMO Polar Coded, two helicopters and a submersible. Octopus, 126 m, ice class 1A. Polar readiness is checked yacht by yacht.

Charter

The Whole Ship

A small expedition ship taken by one family or one company. More than 12 passengers is no longer the yacht category, so the rules of a ship apply, and the operator's team sails with her.

Air

Flights and Positioning

The flight to Buenos Aires or Santiago, the onward leg to Ushuaia or Punta Arenas, the connection to a fly-cruise. Private aircraft positioning is confirmed flight by flight. See private jet charter.

Land

Gateway Stays and Drivers

A missed connection can cost you the ship. Hotels, drivers, arrivals and a spare day before embarkation. See executive transportation.

Protect

Close Protection

On the ice, an officer where the operator accepts one, unarmed. On land in Argentina and Chile, protection runs through locally licensed officers in each jurisdiction, coordinated by the house. See close protection explained.

01 —

The Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetlands

The Lemaire Channel runs 11 km, narrows to 600 m, and early ice can close it. Port Lockroy keeps Britain's wartime Base A as a museum, open from November to March. Gentoo penguins breed at Petermann Island. At Deception Island you sail through Neptune's Bellows, 500 m wide, into a flooded caldera, and Baily Head holds one of the large chinstrap colonies of the South Shetlands. More than 20 sites receive over 15,000 visitors a season, which is the case for a quieter anchorage. The list is a wish, not a contract: ice and wind have the casting vote.

02 —

The Weddell Sea and the emperors of Snow Hill

East of the Peninsula the Weddell Sea is often clogged with heavy pack ice, and that is the reason to go. Emperor penguins breed on the sea ice off Snow Hill Island, about 8,000 birds, reached in November by helicopter from a strong ice-class ship. Le Commandant Charcot, as of 2025 the only Polar Class 2 ship in service, has worked these waters, and Shackleton's Endurance was found here in 2022 at 3,008 m. The colony is never guaranteed. Conditions decide access, and any house that promises you emperors is selling.

Destinations we arrange
03 —

South Georgia and the Falkland Islands

Both lie north of 60 degrees South, outside the Treaty area, under their own rules. South Georgia is reached only by sea, needs an entry permit and has no medical facilities for visitors and no search and rescue; the Falklands are at least three days away and South America at least five. Helicopters are banned. In return: king penguin beaches beneath glaciers at Gold Harbour and Shackleton's grave at Grytviken. The Falklands add five penguin species and Volunteer Point. Since 2010 Argentina has required authorisation for vessels using its waters on the way to these islands, so routing from Ushuaia is settled early.

Private travel
04 —

The Drake Passage or the flight

The Drake is about 800 km of open water between Cape Horn and the South Shetlands, and waves can reach 12 m. By ship it is around 48 hours each way. The alternative is about two hours by air from Punta Arenas to the gravel airfield on King George Island, 1,292 m long, and straight onto a ship. Sail if you want the crossing and the sense of arrival, or if South Georgia is on the route. Fly if days are short or the sea is a genuine problem. Flights wait for the weather and you wait with them, which is why a spare day in Punta Arenas is not a luxury.

Private jet charter
05 —

A private yacht or the top suite

A yacht of up to 12 passengers falls into the yacht category of IAATO, the operators' association. She must be authorised by her operator's country or her flag state; an Argentine or Chilean exit permit by itself is not enough, so ask to see the skipper's authorisation. She must be self-sufficient and expect no rescue. A ship gives you a doctor and a larger team, but shared Zodiacs and, under IAATO operators' standards, no more than 100 people ashore at a time. On a ship the expedition leader decides for everyone. On a yacht the decision is made with you, within the same rules, ice and weather. If neither fits the party, we say so.

Ushuaia, Punta Arenas and the cities before them

Ushuaia's 2,804 m runway lies about 4 km from the centre, with approaches over water; Arakur stands above the town in the Cerro Alarkén reserve and Los Cauquenes on the Beagle Channel. Punta Arenas has Hotel Cabo de Hornos on the main square, with The Singular Patagonia and Awasi beyond it. Buenos Aires has the Alvear Palace and the Faena; Santiago has The Singular in Lastarria. UK travel advice warns of motorbike bag snatching and occasional express kidnapping across Argentina, of road blockades on the routes in and out of Buenos Aires, and of armed muggings, carjackings and Friday protests in Santiago. Neither country page names Ushuaia or Punta Arenas, and the national warnings still apply. On land the officer is a local one, licensed in that jurisdiction and coordinated by the house.

The Season

The months the ice is booked around.

November

Ice, courtship and Snow Hill

Deep snow, more sea ice and penguins beginning to breed. The Snow Hill voyages sail now, the Lemaire Channel can still be blocked and Port Lockroy opens.

December

The longest light

Up to about 20 hours of daylight, seal pups and the first chicks. From mid-December the shore conditions are at their best. Christmas and New Year cabins are the ones to settle first.

January

Chicks and the mildest days

The west coast of the Peninsula averages 1 to 2 degrees Celsius. The few voyages aiming for the Antarctic Circle, at about 66 degrees 33 minutes South, sail around now.

February

Whales

Whales feed in the channels and the light lowers and turns golden. From the middle of the month humpback activity peaks. For anyone who comes for the whales, this is the month.

March

The closing weeks

The last voyages of the season, late humpbacks and a low golden light. Air-cruises run through March, weather permitting, and Port Lockroy closes for the winter.

The Planning Year

Why the calendar starts early

Add-ons such as camping and kayaking are limited, and some authorities want a yacht's application several months before she sails. We are taking enquiries for 2027-28 now.

The Engagement

How an Antarctic journey is arranged.

Step One

Enquiry

You write once, in any of our languages, with the season, the party and any vessel you have in mind. Our team is under NDA from the first message.

Step Two

The Brief

A short written brief: ages and mobility, what you most want to see, how you feel about the Drake, and any name that changes the privacy picture.

Step Three

Proposal

One written proposal, through our Swiss travel partner house and the operator or yacht that runs the voyage. One figure per line, confirmed before you pay.

Step Four

The Voyage

The cabin or charter secured, flights and hotels built around the embarkation, and one calendar for the operator's deadlines.

On Board

The Expedition Leader Decides

On the ice the captain and the expedition leader run the day. Where an officer has been accepted as a passenger, the officer manages approaches and photography around you.

After

The Way Home

The return through Ushuaia or Punta Arenas, a night in Patagonia if you want one, and the flight out. The same contact closes the file.

Excellence, Discreetly Delivered

“On the ice the captain decides and the weather has the last word. Everything else was decided long before, by whoever was paying attention.”

Algoz Group
Indicative Cost

What an Antarctica luxury expedition costs.

We do not publish a figure for a voyage we have not scoped. The vessel, the season, the cabin or charter and the route decide the number. The voyage or charter is quoted as its own line, and so are the flights, the hotels, the drivers and the guides: one figure per line, confirmed before you pay. A protection officer is quoted to the brief, with travel and the officer's berth as separate lines.

We ask for at least seven days for a late cabin or a city leg, and under 48 hours carries an urgency fee and is not guaranteed. See what a luxury concierge costs and what a bodyguard costs.

The 2027-28 Season

Send the season you have in mind.

Tell us the months, the party and how much of the ice you want, and we reply with a written proposal.

Who Books It

Who books an Antarctic expedition through the house.

Families

Three generations on the ice

A ship or a yacht chosen around the youngest and the oldest. Operators set their own age limits, and every landing is by Zodiac. We ask before you fall in love with a ship.

Owners

Your own yacht going south

Authorisation through your flag state, polar readiness looked at honestly, the expedition team, the shore plan and the crew flights, on one brief.

Charterers

A yacht for the best weeks

Twelve guests and landings chosen daily with the captain and the expedition leader. We ask to see the skipper's authorisation before you commit.

Public Figures

A recognised name on a shared ship

Other guests carry cameras, and an NDA binds only those who sign it. A yacht solves that. A suite does not, entirely.

Family Offices

One brief, one file

An assistant or a family office runs it on one file: the operator's medical forms, insurance that names Antarctica, the flights to Ushuaia and every deadline on one calendar.

Curious Minds

Photographers and scientists at heart

Helicopters for Snow Hill, specialists where the vessel carries them, and the rules to respect: one operator bans drones, and South Georgia may require a permit for them.

Where We Deliver

From the first city to the last landing.

The Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetlands, the Weddell Sea, South Georgia and the Falklands, by ship or yacht from Ushuaia and Punta Arenas. On land the same house runs concierge in Argentina, protection in Buenos Aires, executive transportation in Santiago and the wider travel and destination management.

Good to Know

Antarctica Luxury Expeditions: Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a private Antarctica expedition cost?

There is no honest single figure, and we do not publish one for a voyage we have not scoped. The vessel, the season, the cabin or charter and the route decide it. Each element is quoted as its own line, one figure per line, confirmed before you pay. A protection officer is quoted to the brief, with travel and the officer's berth as separate lines.

Can a protection officer travel with us to Antarctica, and would the officer be armed?

Where the operator accepts the officer as a passenger, yes, and acceptance is never automatic. Protection in Antarctica is unarmed: that is house policy, without exception. On board, the officer manages privacy, approaches and photography. In the gateway cities of Argentina and Chile, the detail is made up of locally licensed officers, coordinated by the house.

How far ahead do we need to book an Antarctic expedition or a private yacht for the season?

Far ahead. Peak cabins and yacht weeks go months before the season, and some authorities want a yacht's application several months before the voyage. Enquiries for 2027-28 are open now. For a late cabin or a city leg, we ask for at least seven days. Under 48 hours carries an urgency fee and is not guaranteed.

Is Antarctica safe, and what happens if someone falls ill on board?

Crime is not the concern: UK travel advice records no history of it in the British Antarctic Territory. The serious risks are weather, ice, distance and medicine. Facilities are very limited and rescue teams may take several days to arrive. One operator carries a doctor on each ship and warns that adequate care could be 72 hours or more away. Discuss conditions with the operator before booking, and carry insurance that specifically covers Antarctica.

Should we cross the Drake Passage or fly from Punta Arenas to King George Island?

Cross if you want the whole voyage and the route that can include South Georgia: about 800 km of open water, around 48 hours each way. Fly if days are short or the sea is a genuine problem: about two hours from Punta Arenas to the gravel airfield on King George Island. Some voyages sail one way and fly the other. Flights depend on the weather, so leave a spare day.

Private expedition yacht or the top suite on a small expedition ship: which is right for us?

Choose a yacht if privacy and your own pace come first and the party is small: up to 12 passengers, with each decision made with you. The price is self-sufficiency, because IAATO tells yachts not to expect rescue. Choose a top suite on a Polar Class ship if you want a doctor on board, a large expedition team and a lower outlay, and accept that fellow guests carry cameras.

How do we get to Ushuaia or Punta Arenas, and can we position a private jet there or fly straight to Antarctica?

Scheduled flights reach Ushuaia from Buenos Aires and Punta Arenas from Santiago in a little under four hours, and private aircraft positioning is confirmed flight by flight. You cannot simply fly on to the ice: in June 2025 a private pilot who left Punta Arenas on a local flight plan landed on King George Island without authorisation and was detained by Chile. White Desert flies groups of 12 from Cape Town to Wolf's Fang, and jet charters reach Union Glacier from Punta Arenas. Neither is your own jet.

What is the best month to visit Antarctica: November, December, January, February or March?

It depends on what you came for. November brings ice, courtship and the Snow Hill voyages. December and January bring up to about 20 hours of daylight, chicks and seal pups. From mid-February to late March humpback activity peaks and the light turns golden. No month is a bad month, and none is a guaranteed one.

Which places will we actually see on the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetlands?

Usually the Lemaire Channel, Port Lockroy, Petermann Island and Deception Island, on Zodiac landings and cruises as weather and ice allow. The expedition leader chooses each site on the day, so treat any published itinerary as an intention. Over 100,000 passengers now come each year, which is the argument for a smaller vessel.

Are South Georgia and the Falklands worth the extra days?

For anyone who cares about wildlife or Shackleton, yes. South Georgia has king penguin colonies at Gold Harbour, St Andrews Bay and Salisbury Plain and Shackleton's grave at Grytviken; the Falklands add five penguin species, Sea Lion Island and Carcass Island. It is a longer voyage with more open sea, and South Georgia has no medical facilities for visitors and no search and rescue.

Can we see emperor penguins in the Weddell Sea?

Sometimes, and never on a promise. The colony off Snow Hill Island holds about 8,000 birds and is reached in November by helicopter; Quark sails a 14-day voyage on Ultramarine for it. Heavy pack ice can defeat the attempt. If a certain sighting is the whole purpose of the journey, we will tell you honestly that no voyage can sell you one.

Can we take children on an Antarctic expedition?

Yes, within each operator's limits, and they differ. One fly-cruise operator takes children of 8 and over on air-cruises, with a minimum of 1.20 m and 30 kg, and 12 and over on sea voyages, and an adult signs a waiver. Every landing is by Zodiac, so a child has to manage the boat and the cold.

What are the IAATO rules and how do they limit what a private party can do ashore?

IAATO is the operators' association and its standards are self-regulation, not law: no more than 100 people ashore at one time, one guide per 20 visitors, and no landings from vessels carrying more than 500 passengers. Above that sits the Antarctic Treaty, which applies south of 60 degrees South and neither recognises nor extinguishes the sector claims of seven states. It allows peaceful purposes only: military measures are prohibited, though military personnel may support science. Each voyage needs authorisation under national law, usually from the operator's country or the vessel's flag state; for British expeditions that is the FCDO Polar Regions Department.

Which languages does Algoz work in for an Antarctic journey?

English and Spanish are standard on the Argentine and Chilean legs. The house works with clients in English, Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic and Chinese, on notice. Expedition teams belong to the operator, so we ask which languages a ship carries before you commit to her.

Why arrange an Antarctica luxury expedition through Algoz rather than directly with the cruise line or a yacht charter house?

A cruise line sells its own ships and a charter house sells its own list. If you want one of them and nothing else, book direct, and we will say so. Algoz gives you one accountable contact from the first city to the last, the yacht and the ship compared honestly, one figure per line, our team under NDA, and protection on the same brief where the journey needs it.

Can an assistant or a family office book the whole journey on our behalf?

Yes, and it is often how these journeys are arranged. The assistant or the office holds one contact, one proposal and one calendar of deadlines. Medical forms are the traveller's own and go to the operator. The NDA covers our team from that first message.
