How Much Does a Security Driver Cost?

One figure worth publishing, and everything that moves it.

The Short Answer

How much does a security driver cost?

A security-trained driver is a licensed close protection officer at the wheel, and he is priced as an officer: from EUR 850 per day, the market base, for a single principal on twelve-hour cover. That is the one number that can be published honestly. Chauffeur-only hire, vehicle class, armoured specification, event nights and cross-border legs are quoted to the brief, because those variables move a quotation far more than the number of days does. Where transportation runs inside a coordinated programme, with protection, airport handling and concierge together, engagements typically start from EUR 1,800 per day. We ask for at least seven days. That is the honest lead time for vetting the brief, assigning the right officer and doing the advance work. Under 48 hours is an urgency case: additional fees, and no guarantee. Every figure is confirmed in writing before anything is booked.

This Is Not Marketing

Why almost nobody publishes a driver rate.

Search “chauffeur service cost” or “executive driver rates” and you meet two kinds of page. The first quotes an hourly figure so low it can only describe an app-dispatched saloon with a driver who was cleaning a different car twenty minutes earlier. The second quotes nothing at all and asks you to fill in a form. Neither tells you what you actually want to know, which is what separates the two numbers and which one your movement requires.

The reason the honest answer is hard to publish is that “driver” describes two different professions wearing the same suit. One is a hospitality role. The other is a protective one, licensed and trained, where the vehicle happens to be the working position. They are not variants of each other and they are not priced on the same scale. This page sets out the figure we can publish, the difference behind it, the factors that move a quotation up or down, and how to tell which of the two your principal needs on a given day.

What Is Actually Priced

The parts a quotation is built from.

Security Driver

From €850/day

A licensed close protection officer at the wheel, on twelve-hour cover for a single principal. The market base for a trained, vetted and operationally experienced professional, shaped upward by profile, threat picture and season.

Chauffeur Only

Quoted to the brief

A professional driver without a protective mandate. Priced by the hours held at disposal, the vehicle class and the city, so a single published number would mislead in both directions.

Coordinated Programme

From €1,800/day

Where protection, transportation, airport handling and concierge run together under one coordinator rather than as separate bookings. Typical starting point for a full day of combined cover.

Vehicle Class

Quoted to the brief

Executive saloon, people carrier, prestige marque, SUV or armoured specification. The car is a separate line from the person driving it, and it moves independently of the driver rate.

Formation

Quoted to the brief

A second vehicle, a follow car or a full formation multiplies drivers, vehicles and coordination. Team size is the single fastest way to change a total, in either direction.

Armed Work

30-day authorisation

Not a line item and never a same-week arrangement. Armed protection requires a minimum 30-day lead time for authorisation in every jurisdiction we work in, and it may be refused.

Read those six together and the shape of a quotation becomes clear. A day of cover is not one price with options bolted on; it is a person, a vehicle and a plan, each of which carries its own cost and its own lead time. The full service picture sits on the Executive Transportation page, and the protective side is set out in our close protection pricing guide.

Security Driver or Chauffeur: The Difference That Sets the Price

A chauffeur is trained in the craft of driving well: smooth progress, punctuality, luggage, discretion, the manners of the profession. A security driver holds all of that and a close protection licence on top of it, which means route planning, threat awareness, embus and debus procedure, evasive and defensive driving, trauma-capable first aid, and the judgement to leave a location before a situation forms rather than after. The second person costs more because the training, the licensing and the liability behind him cost more, and because the pool of people who genuinely hold both skill sets is small in every city on earth.

That is the whole reason the EUR 850 base applies to a driver at all. When the man at the wheel is a close protection officer, he is priced as a close protection officer, not as transport. Anyone quoting a security driver at a chauffeur rate is either selling a chauffeur under a better title or absorbing a loss they will find another way to recover.

Bodyguard & Close Protection
What Moves the Price

Six factors that change the number.

Hours

Disposal or Transfer

A car held at disposal all day is a different commitment from three timed transfers. Twelve-hour cover is the reference; shorter days, split shifts and overnight positioning all price differently.

Fleet

Vehicle Class

An executive saloon, a people carrier for a family, a prestige marque for a premiere and an SUV for mountain roads are four different costs before anyone is assigned to drive them.

Protection Level

Armoured or Standard

Armoured vehicles are scarce, heavy, expensive to run and limited by market and lead time. Availability is the constraint far more often than budget is.

Geography

Cross-Border Legs

Distance, tolls, permits, insurance validity and the driver’s return leg all attach to an intercity or cross-border movement, and a border crossing adds documentation before it adds kilometres.

Calendar

Night and Event Work

Grand Prix week, fashion week, a film festival or a gala night compresses supply in an entire city at once. Late finishes, standby hours and peak weeks are priced accordingly.

Scale

Team Size

One officer covering one principal is the base. A second vehicle, a follow car, an advance driver or a formation multiplies the total by people, not by discount.

When a Chauffeur Is Enough

Most movements do not need a protective mandate, and we will say so rather than sell one. A board meeting across a familiar capital, an airport transfer for an executive who is not publicly identifiable, a dinner in a city where the principal has no profile, a family day out where the only real risks are traffic and time: a properly vetted chauffeur with the right vehicle answers all of them, and paying officer rates for that work is simply paying more for a service you are not using.

The test is not wealth, and it is not the price of the car. It is exposure. If nobody who wishes the principal harm knows the schedule, if the venues are ordinary, if the itinerary is not published anywhere and there is no audience waiting at the kerb, the correct answer is a good chauffeur, arranged well, coordinated by someone who has already checked the route and the arrival point.

When You Want an Officer Driving

The vehicle is where a principal is most predictable and least able to move. Arrival and departure points are the two moments a hostile observer can plan around, because they are the only ones on the schedule that cannot be improvised. That is the argument for a close protection officer at the wheel, and it is an operational argument rather than a status one.

Engage one when the principal is publicly recognisable, when the itinerary has been published or leaked, when the destination is a red-carpet or press-facing venue, when children are travelling, when the movement crosses a jurisdiction where the risk picture is unfamiliar, when there is an active dispute or a known grievance, or when the schedule runs late at night into venues with crowds outside. In those situations the driver is not transport with extra training. He is the closest protective layer the principal has, and the difference in rate buys the judgement that keeps the car moving.

Advance positioning and route planning

Why Two Identical-Looking Quotes Differ

Two quotations for the same three days in the same city can sit far apart without either being dishonest. One may cover a twelve-hour disposal day and the other three timed transfers. One may include a briefed reconnaissance of the route and the arrival point and the other may not. One may price a driver who holds a current close protection licence, verified medical training and years of principal-side experience; the other may price a smart man in a good suit who has never planned a route in his life. One may carry the vehicle, the fuel, the tolls, the parking, the overnight positioning and the return leg inside the figure, and the other may present them afterwards.

The only way to compare fairly is to compare the same brief. Ask any provider to state the hours, the vehicle class, the driver’s qualification, what happens to costs outside the quoted window, and who is responsible if the schedule changes at nineteen hundred on a Friday. A professional answers all five without hesitating.

Security Driver Costs - Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a security driver cost?

A security-trained driver is a licensed close protection officer at the wheel, and he is priced as an officer: from EUR 850 per day, the market base, for a single principal on twelve-hour cover. The final rate is shaped by the profile, the threat picture, the itinerary and the season, and it is confirmed in writing on enquiry with no obligation. Vehicle class, armoured specification, additional vehicles and event weeks sit above the base and are quoted to the brief.

What is the difference between a security driver and a chauffeur?

A chauffeur is trained in the craft of driving: smooth progress, punctuality, luggage, discretion. A security driver holds all of that plus a close protection licence, which brings route planning, threat awareness, embus and debus procedure, defensive driving, trauma-capable first aid and the judgement to leave a location before a situation forms. That licensing and training is the reason the two roles are priced on different scales.

How much does a chauffeur service cost per day?

Chauffeur-only hire is quoted to the brief rather than published, because the figure is driven by variables nobody can guess in advance: the hours the car is held at disposal, the vehicle class, the city, the season, the distance covered and whether overnight positioning is needed. Tell us the itinerary and you receive one written figure for the whole movement before anything is booked.

What are typical executive driver rates?

The only rate that can be published honestly is the protective one, because it is tied to a licensed profession: from EUR 850 per day for a close protection officer driving a single principal on twelve-hour cover. Everything else in executive transportation, from a saloon for three timed transfers to a prestige marque for a premiere, is a function of hours, vehicle and city and is quoted per movement.

Is a security driver the same as a bodyguard?

He holds the same licence and the same training, but the working position is different. A close protection officer on foot moves with the principal through venues and crowds; a security driver holds the vehicle, the route and the arrival and departure points, which are the two moments in any day a hostile observer can plan around. Many engagements use both, and they are briefed as one team.

What makes one security driver quote higher than another?

Six things, in roughly this order: the hours and whether the car is held at disposal or booked movement by movement, the vehicle class, armoured versus standard specification, cross-border or intercity legs, night and event work in a compressed season, and the number of drivers and vehicles in the formation. Team size changes a total faster than any other single factor.

Does an armoured vehicle cost more than a standard executive car?

Yes, and it is quoted to the brief rather than published. Armoured vehicles are scarce in most markets, heavier and more expensive to run, and their availability is constrained by lead time more often than by budget. Armouring to higher protection levels is available in selected markets on sufficient notice; send the dates and the destination and we confirm what is genuinely obtainable.

How much notice do you need to arrange a security driver?

Seven days is the minimum we ask for, and more is better. Inside that week the brief is vetted, the right officer is assigned and released from other work, and the advance work on routes, venues and access is done properly. We will always look at shorter notice, but under 48 hours is an urgency case: it carries additional fees and it cannot be guaranteed. Nobody produces a licensed officer in 24 hours, whatever the promise. Armoured vehicles and specialist requirements need longer and vary by country. Anything involving armed authorisation requires a minimum 30-day lead time, and authorisation may be refused by the relevant authorities.

Do I need a security driver, or is a normal chauffeur enough?

The test is exposure, not wealth. If the principal is not publicly identifiable, the itinerary is not published anywhere, the venues are ordinary and there is no audience waiting at the kerb, a properly vetted chauffeur is the correct and cheaper answer, and we will tell you so. If the principal is recognisable, the schedule has leaked, the venue is press-facing, children are travelling or the jurisdiction is unfamiliar, you want an officer at the wheel.

How is a multi-vehicle movement or convoy priced?

By people and vehicles, not by discount. A follow car, an advance vehicle or a full formation adds drivers, cars, coordination and briefing time, so the total scales with the number of elements rather than compressing. Formations are quoted to the brief after we understand the route, the venues and the risk picture.

Are night work, event weeks and peak season charged differently?

Yes. Grand Prix week in Monaco, fashion week in Milan or Paris, a film festival or a major gala compresses the supply of qualified drivers and suitable vehicles across an entire city at the same time. Late finishes, standby hours and peak weeks are reflected in the quotation, which is one good reason to brief early rather than late.

What does a cross-border or intercity transfer cost?

It is quoted to the brief, because a border adds documentation before it adds distance. Permits, insurance validity, tolls, the driver hours involved and the return leg all attach to the movement, and some vehicle categories cannot cross certain frontiers at all. Give us the two cities and the dates and we confirm both the figure and the feasibility.

Can transportation be booked together with close protection?

Yes, and it usually is. Drivers, vehicles and routes are coordinated with the protection detail through one point of contact, so you brief once instead of stitching vendors together. Where protection, transportation, airport handling and concierge run as one coordinated programme, engagements typically start from EUR 1,800 per day.

How is transport billed, and do you accept cryptocurrency?

Engagements are quoted following a confidential consultation, by the hour, the day or the programme, with the final figure fixed in writing before anything is confirmed. We invoice in AED, USD, EUR and GBP, and accept USDT, USDC, Bitcoin and Ethereum for clients who value complete transactional privacy.
