Bodyguard in New Jersey
Can you hire a bodyguard in New Jersey?
Yes, and within New Jersey’s licensing system it is entirely lawful, with the one fact that defines every engagement here: New Jersey licenses security separately from New York, so the officer who meets you at Teterboro and the officer who walks you into a Fifth Avenue hotel an hour later are two licences, two partners and, inside Algoz, one plan. We arrange a SORA-registered New Jersey close protection officer who meets you on the ramp at Teterboro or inside Newark Liberty, a security driver who knows which Hudson crossing is moving at that hour and which is not, and the same team stays with you through the estate in Alpine or Short Hills, the headquarters, the stadium and the evening, handing over inside Algoz when the day crosses the river. Send your dates and your addresses and a confidential proposal follows within 24 hours, with the officer profile and the final rate, and no obligation attached.
What people ask before enquiring.
Is it legal?
Yes. Private security in New Jersey is regulated by the State Police Private Detective Unit: security companies are licensed, with a bond, and every officer is registered under the Security Officer Registration Act after fingerprinting, a background check and the state’s 24-hour course. Algoz coordinates only within that framework.
What it costs
Priced to the profile and the itinerary. New Jersey is a residential and corporate market first, and most briefs are met by one officer and a security driver; a programme that crosses into Manhattan is quoted as one programme with New York officers on the other side. The final rate comes with the proposal; an idea of day rates is in the FAQ below.
How fast
Plan on seven days. Vetting the brief, releasing the right officer and completing the advance work takes that long. Under 48 hours means additional fees and no guarantee of cover.
Armed or unarmed
New Jersey details run unarmed. The state has some of the strictest firearms laws in the country; an armed officer needs both the armed SORA certification and a New Jersey permit to carry, which is a long municipal process. Armed cover is rarely practical for a visiting principal and we say so plainly.
Where we cover
Bergen County first: Alpine, Saddle River, Englewood Cliffs, Franklin Lakes and Teterboro. Then Short Hills, Summit, Far Hills and Bedminster, Princeton, the Jersey City and Hoboken waterfront, Newark and the Meadowlands, and in summer the Shore at Deal, Rumson and Long Branch, with Atlantic City on request and Manhattan under the same brief.
Who you get
Vetted New Jersey officers, many from the military, the State and county police, the Port Authority and corporate executive protection, working in English and Spanish, with Russian-speaking officers common in a state with large Russian-speaking communities. Coordination in Hebrew, Arabic, Portuguese and Chinese, and the written day plan in your language on request.
Where Manhattan's wealth sleeps, lands and spends its summer.
New Jersey is the wealthiest state in America by most measures and the least understood by visitors, who see it from the window of a car between Newark and the Lincoln Tunnel. The families who own Manhattan sleep here: in Alpine, Saddle River and Englewood Cliffs above the Palisades in Bergen County, where the estates are among the most expensive in the country; in Short Hills, Summit and the Essex and Morris County towns along the train line; in Far Hills and Bedminster in the Somerset Hills horse country; and in Princeton around the university. Manhattan’s business aviation lands here, at Teterboro, the busiest business airport in the region, and at Morristown. The pharmaceutical industry is headquartered here, in New Brunswick, Rahway, East Hanover and along Route 1, and the back offices of Wall Street have moved to the Jersey City waterfront. The Shore at Deal, Rumson and Long Branch is the summer address of Brooklyn’s Syrian Jewish community and of New York money in general, Lakewood holds one of the largest Orthodox communities in the world, and the stadium and the arena in the Meadowlands hold the Giants, the Jets, the concerts and the fights. It is a safe state in the ordinary sense, with a specific pattern a visitor should know: the organised burglary crews, some of them foreign nationals travelling on tourist visas, who have worked the Bergen, Essex and Morris County estates and the homes of Asian-American and other affluent families for years; a documented surge in luxury car theft from driveways; carjackings in and around the cities; and the Hudson crossings, which decide every day.
Algoz coordinates bodyguard services in New Jersey through vetted, SORA-registered operators with genuine local knowledge: officers who know which Alpine driveway is watched by which patrol, how Teterboro’s FBOs handle a late arrival, whether the George Washington Bridge or the Lincoln Tunnel is the plan at eight in the morning, what a Giants Sunday does to Route 3, and how Deal and Rumson fill from June. Our clients are families in residence in Bergen and Essex County for a posting or a season, executives and delegations from the Gulf, Europe and Asia at the pharmaceutical and finance headquarters, owners of a Shore house for the summer, patients at the Hackensack and RWJ hospitals and the Manhattan hospitals across the river, parents of students at Princeton, recognisable people who prefer a New Jersey estate to a Manhattan tower, and the assistants and family offices who book for all of them. The brief is given once; from the Teterboro ramp to the last dinner, on either side of the river, one team plans, drives and covers it.
Why hire a bodyguard in New Jersey?
Estate Burglary Crews
Organised crews, some of them foreign nationals on tourist visas, have worked the Bergen, Essex and Morris County estates for years, studying a house, waiting for the family to leave and entering through the back. Affluent Asian-American and Jewish families have been targeted specifically. A residence detail is advance work before it is presence.
Luxury Car Theft & Carjacking
New Jersey recorded one of the sharpest rises in luxury car theft in the country, with vehicles taken from driveways with the fob inside, and carjackings in and around Newark, Jersey City and the highway interchanges. A security driver who never leaves the vehicle, and never idles where he should not, is the answer.
The Hudson & the Last Mile
The George Washington Bridge, the Lincoln and Holland tunnels and the ferries decide every New Jersey day, and a predictable, slow crossing is exposure in itself. The choice is made on the morning, with the alternative already chosen, and the kerb on the Manhattan side is a New York officer’s job.
Visible Wealth
The Mall at Short Hills, the Riverside and Garden State Plaza malls, the jewellers of Englewood and the restaurants of Hoboken and Jersey City are where serious pieces are bought and worn and where a recognisable face is read at a glance. The walk back to the car across a New Jersey parking lot is where it matters.
The Meadowlands & the Shore
A Giants or Jets Sunday, a championship fight or a stadium concert releases eighty thousand people onto Route 3 at once; the Shore fills from June and the Parkway with it. Departure is always the harder half, and it is planned weeks ahead.
Antisemitic & Targeted Incidents
New Jersey’s Jewish communities in Bergen County, Lakewood and the Shore have faced a documented rise in antisemitic incidents, and families, institutions and events in those communities ask for a presence that understands the calendar and the etiquette and reads as a guest, not a guard.
Bodyguard Services in New Jersey
Licensed Officers
SORA-registered close protection officers with military, State and county police, Port Authority and corporate executive protection backgrounds, dressed for an Alpine dinner rather than a checkpoint, NDA-bound, briefed to our standard and supervised throughout.
Secure Transportation & the Crossings
Executive SUVs and sedans with security-trained drivers, the Hudson crossing chosen on the morning with the alternative already in hand, the vehicle held in the driveway rather than on the road, and the Manhattan kerb handed to a New York officer under the same plan.
Estate & Residence Security
Estates in Alpine, Saddle River, Englewood Cliffs and Franklin Lakes, houses in Short Hills, Summit and Princeton, apartments on the Jersey City and Hoboken waterfront and Shore houses in Deal and Rumson, from a single overnight to a standing detail, with gates, cameras and the patrol reviewed first.
Executive & Headquarters Protection
Board visits and delegations at the pharmaceutical headquarters of New Brunswick, Rahway, East Hanover and Route 1, the finance back offices of Jersey City and the campuses of Princeton and the Route 1 corridor, with credentials and gate access arranged before the morning and the itinerary kept under NDA.
Family, Community & Female Officers
Family protocols for the private schools, the synagogues and community institutions, the malls and the Shore weekends, with female close protection officers available for principals and children who are better served by one and officers who understand the Jewish calendar and etiquette.
Stadium, Arena & Shore Season
MetLife Stadium and the arena in the Meadowlands, the Prudential Center in Newark, the Shore clubs and the Deal and Rumson season, and private celebrations in the estates: venue advance, arrival choreography and a departure that begins before the crowd moves.
Alpine, Saddle River & the Bergen County estates
The most expensive residential streets in New Jersey sit on the Palisades above the Hudson and in the hills behind them: Alpine, where the estates look across the river at the Bronx and the gates are discreet because the owners are; Saddle River and Upper Saddle River, with their acreage and their horse paddocks; Englewood Cliffs and Englewood, where the Russian-speaking, Korean and Jewish communities overlap with the new towers; and Franklin Lakes and Ho-Ho-Kus beyond. Families in residence for a posting or a season, owners who commute to Manhattan over the bridge each morning, recognisable people who prefer a Bergen County estate to a Fifth Avenue tower and Gulf, Russian and Israeli families who have made the county a second home base themselves here, and the brief changes with them: the school run to the private schools and the yeshivas, the drive over the George Washington Bridge at eight in the morning, the afternoon at the Riverside mall or in Englewood, the weekend at the Shore, and a residence where seclusion is the point and seclusion is the vulnerability, with the documented burglary crews who have worked exactly these streets. Residence work here is advance work: gates, lighting and camera lines reviewed, the household and the police patrol briefed, the car never left in the driveway with the fob inside, deliveries controlled, and an officer present in a way that neighbours and guests never register.
Teterboro, Newark Liberty & Morristown
Teterboro is the business airport Manhattan actually uses: twelve miles from Midtown, the busiest general aviation field in the region, with FBOs that work the ramp around the clock and a ramp at nine on a Monday morning that is a car park of jets. The officer meets the aircraft at the FBO so the transfer begins covered, customs is cleared in the building for international arrivals, luggage is counted onto the vehicle, and the crossing into Manhattan, the Lincoln Tunnel or the George Washington Bridge, is chosen for the hour with the alternative already in hand, because the crossing is where a Teterboro day is won or lost. Newark Liberty carries the scheduled traffic, with the long-haul arrivals from the Gulf, Europe, Israel and Asia landing in Terminal B and the new Terminal A, and the curb outside with its rideshare touts and its taxi queue is the most public moment of any New Jersey itinerary; we plan it out of existence with a meet inside the terminal and a vehicle staged so the walk is seconds. Morristown Municipal serves the Morris and Somerset County estates and the Far Hills horse country, and keeps a principal clear of the Hudson entirely. Each has its own handling agents and its own view on how close a vehicle may come to an aircraft, and our coordinator speaks to your handler directly rather than through you. See executive transportation in New York.
Short Hills, Summit, Far Hills & the train-line towns
West of Newark the old New Jersey money lives along the train line: Short Hills and Millburn, with The Mall at Short Hills holding the state’s luxury retail under one roof; Summit, Chatham and Madison in the Essex and Morris County hills; and further out the horse country of Far Hills, Bedminster and Peapack-Gladstone in the Somerset Hills, where the estates run to hundreds of acres and the golf club has hosted presidents. Princeton, an hour south, is the university town and the Institute, with its own quiet wealth and its own parents from abroad. The brief here is residential and seasonal: the school run, the commute to Manhattan or to a headquarters, the shopping afternoon at Short Hills handled by private appointment with the vehicle positioned at the right entrance and the purchases carried by the team, the weekend at the hunt or the club, and a residence that the same burglary crews have studied from the same back roads. Residence work is advance work, and for a family new to the state the first task is often the simplest: knowing which towns, which roads and which hours are the exposure, which is what a local officer carries in his head.
Jersey City, Hoboken & the Gold Coast waterfront
The Hudson waterfront from Jersey City to Hoboken and Weehawken is the newest New Jersey: the towers of Exchange Place and Newport where Wall Street’s back offices and a share of its front offices have moved, the Hoboken brownstones and the restaurants along Washington Street, the ferries and the PATH that put a resident in Lower Manhattan in ten minutes, and a residential population of finance, technology and consulting professionals who chose the view of the skyline over the skyline itself. For an executive in the city for a week at a Jersey City headquarters, the brief is corporate: an officer who reads as staff in a lobby, access arranged before the day, a security driver who knows that the Holland Tunnel at six in the evening is a decision rather than a route, and device and conversation discipline treated as part of the detail. For a family in a waterfront tower, the brief is residential with a particular edge: the building’s own security is a baseline that a detail works with rather than a substitute for one, the parking garage is where the city’s documented carjackings and break-ins happen, and the evening walk along the waterfront is covered by an officer who reads as a neighbour. Newark, a few miles west, holds the arena, the airport and a downtown that a visitor will see for a game and little else.
The Shore: Deal, Rumson, Long Branch & the summer
From June the New Jersey season moves to the coast. Deal is the summer address of Brooklyn’s Syrian Jewish community, one of the wealthiest communities in America, with oceanfront estates, synagogues and a calendar that runs from the first weekend of summer to the holidays in the autumn; Rumson and Fair Haven on the Navesink hold the old Monmouth County money and its yacht clubs; Long Branch, Allenhurst and Spring Lake hold the rest of the Shore’s wealth; and the Parkway on a summer Friday holds everyone at once. The brief changes with the geography: the beach club, the synagogue, the children on bicycles, the Saturday that is not a travel day, the dinner in Red Bank, and a house where everyone in town knows who is in residence and the back door opens onto the sand. Residence work here is advance work: the house surveyed before the first weekend, the household and the seasonal staff briefed, the community’s own patrols and institutions worked with rather than around, and an officer who understands the Sabbath and the holidays and reads as a guest at a Deal table rather than a guard at its door. Atlantic City, further south, is a different brief again, and covered on request.
The Meadowlands, the arena & the pharmaceutical headquarters
Two kinds of New Jersey day fill the roads. The first is the stadium: MetLife Stadium and the arena in the Meadowlands hold the Giants and the Jets on Sundays, the championship fights, the stadium concerts and the largest events on the East Coast, and the Prudential Center in Newark holds the Devils and the touring shows; each releases tens of thousands of people onto Route 3 and the Turnpike within minutes, and for a recognisable guest the walk from a suite to a vehicle through that crowd is the moment of the whole evening. We plan these nights backwards from the exit: the arrival window agreed with the venue’s security, the suite and the corridor walked in advance, an officer who reads as part of the party, and a vehicle held in position before the final whistle rather than sent for afterwards. The second is corporate: the pharmaceutical headquarters of New Brunswick, Rahway, East Hanover and the Route 1 corridor, the finance campuses and the data centres, where a visiting board or a delegation from the Gulf, Europe or Asia spends a week that is measured in discretion rather than presence, with credentials and gate access arranged before the morning, a security driver who turns the Turnpike legs into working time, and an itinerary kept under NDA because in a licensing or acquisition week the schedule itself is the sensitive asset.
How a New Jersey detail is actually run
It starts with your itinerary and your addresses on both sides of the river, not with a headcount. We read the dates, the profile, the estate or the hotel, the crossings and the week, then propose the smallest team that genuinely covers it: most often one officer with a security driver, sometimes a two-officer rotation for a stadium night or a Shore weekend, occasionally a full detail with advance work at every venue and New York officers waiting at the Manhattan kerb. Every New Jersey officer is SORA-registered through a State Police-licensed company, NDA-bound and briefed to the Algoz standard; every estate, hotel and venue is walked before you arrive; the crossing is decided on the morning with the alternative in hand; the handover at the state line is planned, not improvised; and one Algoz contact stays with the engagement from proposal to the departure flight, so you are never managing two unfamiliar vendors in two unfamiliar states. The proposal, the schedule and the written day plan are provided in Russian, Hebrew, Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese or Chinese on request. How close protection works.
Across the river: New York, Connecticut & the corridor
No New Jersey engagement stays in New Jersey for long. Manhattan is across the river, and most of our New Jersey clients spend their days there and their nights here, which is exactly why the two licences are run as one plan: the New Jersey officer closes the day at the tunnel or the bridge, the New York officer is briefed and waiting at the kerb, and the principal notices nothing. Greenwich and the Connecticut estates are an hour north under a third licence, the Hamptons a summer alternative to the Shore, and the corridor south runs to Philadelphia in an hour and Washington in an afternoon by road or by train, with the officer in the carriage and the vehicle positioned at the far end. For itineraries continuing to Miami, Boston or London, the handover happens inside Algoz, not on your desk.
Why protection in New Jersey must be licensed, separately from New York.
Private security in New Jersey is regulated by the New Jersey State Police through its Private Detective Unit. A company that provides security services for hire must hold a security officer company licence, issued after an examination of its character, competency and integrity, with a bond and a two-year renewal; and every individual officer must be registered under the Security Officer Registration Act (SORA), which requires an online application, fingerprinting, a criminal background check and the state’s 24-hour training course before any work begins, with no temporary certificate since 2024. Armed work is a separate and demanding matter: an officer needs the armed SORA certification, with annual firearms training, and, before that, a New Jersey permit to carry a handgun, issued through the municipal police under some of the strictest firearms laws in the country; armed private protection is rarely practical for a visiting principal here, and we say so. A New York registration does not work in New Jersey and a New Jersey registration does not work in New York, which is why an engagement that crosses the Hudson is two licences and one Algoz plan. An unlicensed individual cannot lawfully provide protective services for hire in New Jersey, and a bodyguard brought from the Gulf, Israel, Russia or Europe cannot simply work here; engaging outside the licensed framework exposes a principal to legal risk and voids meaningful liability cover.
Algoz coordinates protection in New Jersey exclusively through this licensed framework, with every operative vetted, NDA-bound and discreet. See how our close protection works, read the state-by-state guide to protection in the USA, cross the river to New York, combine it with VIP concierge across the United States, add secure transport across the Hudson, or extend to Miami and Palm Beach for the winter.
The moments that specifically call for protection in New Jersey.
A residential posting in Alpine, Saddle River, Short Hills or Englewood Cliffs is the New Jersey category: a family new to the state, a house the burglary crews have studied from the back road, a car in the driveway, and a school run across the county. The Shore season from June, in Deal and Rumson, when everyone in town knows who is in residence; a Giants or Jets Sunday, a championship night or a stadium concert at the Meadowlands; and the Jewish holidays, when the communities of Bergen County, Lakewood and the Shore gather and the documented incidents concentrate, are the obvious ones.
A Teterboro arrival with the Hudson crossing to follow, a headquarters week at the pharmaceutical and finance campuses, a Short Hills afternoon where the follow-home begins, a hospital stay at Hackensack or across the river, a school year at Princeton and the daily commute over the bridge or through the tunnel round out the moments where even a short stay benefits from an officer and a security driver. And for families, the practical value is simple: the children see the skyline from the right side of the river while someone else watches everything approaching them.
"New Jersey is where New York sleeps. Good protection here is the person who knows the driveway, the bridge and the hour, and never lets the family notice the state line."
Hire a Bodyguard in New Jersey
Seven days is the notice we ask for. Shorter notice we look at case by case, but under 48 hours carries an urgency fee and cannot be guaranteed. No one puts a licensed officer in place in 24 hours, in either state. Share your dates, your addresses and your itinerary and we respond with a clear proposal, confidential from the first message.
EnquireWhat a bodyguard in New Jersey costs.
As a guide, professional close protection in the United States is, in 2026, from USD 900 per day for a single principal on twelve-hour cover, the market base, with the final rate shaped by the profile, the threat picture and the season, and confirmed on enquiry with no obligation. Specialist profiles, short-notice mobilisation, the stadium nights and the Shore season carry a premium, and a programme that runs on both sides of the Hudson is quoted as one programme with New Jersey officers here and New York officers there. A security driver with an executive vehicle is quoted separately and, in a state defined by its crossings and its driveways, is usually the most useful addition; standing residence details and multi-city programmes are quoted above the base, to the brief. Payment is by card or bank transfer in USD, EUR, GBP or AED.
