Can you hire a bodyguard in Honolulu?

Yes, and within Hawaii’s licensing system it is entirely lawful. Algoz arranges a registered close protection officer who meets you at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport or on the ramp at the private terminals, a security driver who covers the H-1 and the beach roads, and the same team stays with you through the hotel, the restaurants, the shopping and the residence. Send your dates and your hotel and a confidential proposal follows within 24 hours, with the officer profile and the final rate, and no obligation attached.

Straight Answers

What people ask before enquiring.

Legality

Is it legal?

Yes. Private security in Hawaii is regulated under Chapter 463 of the Hawaii Revised Statutes by the Board of Private Detectives and Guards. Guard agencies are licensed and every individual guard is registered, with fingerprint background checks and mandatory training. Algoz coordinates only within that framework.

Cost

What it costs

Priced to the profile and the itinerary. Honolulu is a resort market with a real city behind it, and most briefs are covered by one officer and a security driver. The final rate comes with the proposal; an idea of day rates is in the FAQ below.

Speed

How fast

Plan on seven days. Vetting the brief, releasing the right officer and completing the advance work takes that long on an island with a small pool of genuinely good people. Under 48 hours means additional fees and no guarantee of cover.

Weapons

Armed or unarmed

Almost every Honolulu detail runs unarmed. Hawaii’s firearms laws are among the strictest in the United States, and an armed guard needs a licence to carry issued by the county police. Where a brief genuinely calls for it, we say so and allow at least 30 days; it can be refused.

Coverage

Where we cover

Honolulu and all of Oahu first: Waikiki, Kahala, Diamond Head, Hawaii Kai, Kailua and Lanikai, Ko Olina and the North Shore. Then Maui, Hawaii Island, Kauai and Lanai, with the same contact and the same brief.

Language

Who you get

Vetted Hawaii officers, many from military, federal and law enforcement backgrounds, working in English. Hawaii has a large Japanese-speaking community and Japanese-speaking officers can be requested with notice, though never guaranteed. Enquiries, proposals and the written day plan are handled in Japanese on request.

The Crossroads of the Pacific

A resort city with a real city behind it.

Honolulu is the only major American city that is also a Pacific island resort, and the two realities share the same few square miles. Waikiki holds the beachfront hotels, Kalakaua Avenue and its flagship boutiques; Ala Moana and Kakaako hold the largest open-air shopping centre in the country and the newest condominium towers; Kahala and Diamond Head hold the quietest residential addresses in the state; and Downtown, the port and the airport are a short drive west along a single freeway. The visitor economy is enormous, Japan is its largest international market by a wide margin, and a principal who arrives with a watch, a family and a full itinerary is read within minutes on Kalakaua Avenue by people who do nothing else.

Algoz coordinates bodyguard services in Honolulu through vetted, Hawaii-licensed operators with genuine local knowledge: officers who know which hotel porte-cochère is exposed at nine in the evening, which trailhead car parks are worked by thieves, how the Honolulu Marathon closes Waikiki for a December morning, and how the island’s single-freeway geography shapes every route. Our clients are families from Japan, the mainland and the Gulf, executives in the islands for a board week or a golf week, second-home owners in Kahala and Kakaako, recognisable people who want the beach without the attention, and the assistants and family offices who book for all of them. The brief is given once; from the aircraft steps to the last evening at the Halekulani, one team plans, drives and covers it.

The Security Environment

Why hire a bodyguard in Honolulu?

Vehicles

Rental-Car Break-Ins

Vehicle break-ins are the most consistent crime against visitors in Hawaii, and they are concentrated where tourists leave cars: the Diamond Head trailhead, beach parks, the Pali and Makapuu lookouts, Lanikai. A detail removes the parked car from the picture entirely.

Street

Kalakaua Avenue at Night

Waikiki concentrates a large share of Oahu’s recorded theft into one mile of beachfront: pickpocketing, bag snatching, distraction theft and the occasional robbery, mostly after dark. The 2022 Safe and Sound Waikiki programme has cut it, not removed it.

Beach

Beach Theft

The classic Hawaii loss is the bag left on the sand while the family swims. For a principal travelling with jewellery, phones and documents, somebody has to stay with the towels, and that somebody should be watching the approaches, not the waves.

Profile

Visible Wealth

Luxury Row, the Royal Hawaiian Center and Ala Moana put the highest concentration of fine jewellery and watches in the Pacific on one avenue. A serious piece worn from boutique to beach bar is noticed, and the walk back to the hotel is where it matters.

Disorder

Street Disorder

Honolulu has one of the highest rates of homelessness in the United States, and encampments move between Waikiki, Ala Moana Beach Park, Chinatown and Downtown. Most encounters are harmless; the unpredictable ones are what a calm, trained presence is for.

Geography

One Freeway, One Ring Road

Oahu runs on the H-1 and a single coastal road around the island. An accident, a surf closure or a marathon turns a 30-minute transfer into two hours, and a predictable route is exposure in itself. A security driver who reads the island in real time protects schedule and principal alike.

01 —

Waikiki, Kalakaua Avenue & the beachfront hotels

The Halekulani, the Royal Hawaiian, the Moana Surfrider, the Ritz-Carlton Residences on Kuhio and the newer towers along Kalakaua Avenue are where most of our Honolulu principals stay, and each has its own geometry of porte-cochère, lift lobby, beach access and valet line. Waikiki is a pleasant place to walk and a difficult place to walk unnoticed: Kalakaua Avenue is one long, bright, crowded pavement from the Royal Hawaiian Center to the zoo, and the beach path behind the hotels is open to anyone at any hour. A detail here is quiet choreography: arrival timing agreed with the hotel’s own security, the floor and the lift planned, the beach day covered by an officer who sits where the approaches are visible, and the evening walk back from dinner reduced to a few observed metres.

02 —

HNL, the private terminals & the arrival from Japan

Daniel K. Inouye International Airport is the gateway to the islands, and its arrivals kerb is the most public moment of any Honolulu itinerary, particularly on the morning bank of flights from Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya when several hundred passengers reach the same pavement at once. We plan it out of existence: a meet inside the terminal, luggage handled and counted, a vehicle staged so the walk is seconds, and a driver who knows the Nimitz Highway and the H-1 at that hour. Principals arriving by private aircraft are met at the fixed base operators on the airport, where customs and immigration can be cleared on site and the distance from the aircraft steps to the vehicle is a few metres. Kalaeloa, the general aviation field on the Ewa plain, is used for some west-side arrivals. See executive transportation in Honolulu.

03 —

Kahala, Diamond Head & the residential coast

East of Diamond Head the island changes character. Kahala Avenue holds the most valuable residential addresses in Hawaii, oceanfront estates behind hedges and gates with The Kahala Hotel & Resort at the end of the road, and beyond it Portlock, Hawaii Kai and the windward coast at Lanikai and Kailua, where the beach houses sit on streets with no fences at all. Seclusion is the point, and seclusion is the vulnerability: long driveways, beach access from the sand, gardeners and housekeepers who change weekly, and short-term rentals that pass between guests without any security continuity. Residence work here is advance work: access and beach lines reviewed, household staff briefed, deliveries controlled, and an officer present in a way that neighbours and guests never register.

04 —

Ala Moana, Ward Village & the condominium towers

Between Waikiki and Downtown, Ala Moana Center is the largest open-air shopping centre in the United States and the island’s luxury retail heart, and the Kakaako towers behind it, Ward Village, Park Lane and their neighbours, have become the second-home address of choice for buyers from Japan and the mainland. A shopping day is handled the way we handle Rodeo Drive or Avenue Montaigne: private appointments so pieces are viewed in a salon rather than at a counter, the vehicle positioned at the right entrance of a very large building, purchases carried by the team rather than the principal, and the short, exposed walk across the car park removed. For owners in residence, the towers’ own security is a baseline that a detail works with, not a substitute for one.

05 —

Golf weeks, weddings & the calendar from Japan

Honolulu’s calendar is set in Tokyo as much as in Washington. The year-end and New Year weeks, Golden Week at the turn of April and May, and Obon in mid-August fill the flights from Japan and the suites along Kalakaua Avenue; the Sony Open at Waialae Country Club opens the golf year in January; the Honolulu Marathon, with tens of thousands of runners from Japan, closes the Waikiki roads on the second Sunday of December; and beachfront weddings, a very large business in the islands, bring families, jewellery and photographers to the same lawns every weekend of the year. Each brings its own rhythm of road closures, crowds and attention, and each is covered by the same brief: venue advance, an arrival window agreed with the venue, and an officer who reads as part of the party on the lawn and controls the approaches off it.

06 —

Ko Olina, the west side & the ocean

Half an hour west of the airport, Ko Olina is the other Honolulu: the Four Seasons Resort Oahu, Aulani, the lagoons, the marina and the golf course, built around privacy in a way Waikiki never can be. Families with young children, principals who want the beach without the avenue, and groups taking a villa for a week tend to base themselves here, and the brief changes with them: the resort perimeter, the lagoon beach, the golf course and the drive back along the H-1 become the day. The ocean is part of it too. Private catamaran and fishing charters out of Kewalo Basin and Ko Olina Marina, surf lessons and whale watching from December to April are arranged with the same care as a restaurant, and the officer goes aboard.

07 —

How a Honolulu detail is actually run

It starts with your itinerary, not with a headcount. We read the dates, the profile, the hotel and the season, then propose the smallest team that genuinely covers it: most often one officer with a security driver, sometimes a two-officer rotation for a wedding or a marathon weekend, occasionally a full detail with advance work at every venue and a neighbour island leg. Every officer is Hawaii-registered, NDA-bound and briefed to the Algoz standard; every hotel, villa and venue is walked before you arrive; and one Algoz contact stays with the engagement from proposal to the departure flight, so you are never managing an unfamiliar vendor across an unfamiliar island. For clients from Japan, the proposal, the schedule and the written day plan are provided in Japanese on request. How close protection works.

08 —

Beyond Oahu: Maui, Hawaii Island, Kauai & Lanai

Few Hawaii itineraries stay on one island. The same team follows the principal to Wailea and Kapalua on Maui, to the Kohala Coast resorts of Hawaii Island, Hualalai, Mauna Lani and Mauna Kea, with private arrivals at Kona, to Princeville and Poipu on Kauai, and to Lanai, where the Four Seasons sits on an island with almost no public traffic at all. Interisland movement is planned as part of the brief: scheduled or private flights, vehicles positioned at both ends, resort security briefed before arrival, and the officer travelling with the principal so protection never pauses at a departure gate. For itineraries continuing to Los Angeles, Tokyo or New York, the handover happens inside Algoz, not on your desk.

US Licensing (Hawaii)

Why protection in Hawaii is licensed under Chapter 463.

Private security in Hawaii is regulated by the Board of Private Detectives and Guards, part of the state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, under Chapter 463 of the Hawaii Revised Statutes. Guard agencies hold a state licence, and every individual guard must be registered with the Board, which requires a fingerprint-based state and federal criminal background check, pre-assignment and continuing training, and renewal of the registration. Armed work sits under a second layer: a guard who carries a firearm on duty needs a licence to carry issued by the county police department under the state firearms law, valid only in the county that issued it, and Hawaii grants these sparingly. An unlicensed individual cannot lawfully provide protective services for hire in Hawaii, and a bodyguard brought from Japan, the mainland or abroad cannot simply work here; engaging outside the licensed framework exposes a principal to legal risk and voids meaningful liability cover.

Algoz coordinates protection in Honolulu exclusively through this licensed framework, with every operative vetted, NDA-bound and discreet. See how our close protection works, combine it with VIP concierge in Honolulu, add secure transport in Honolulu, plan a wider Pacific itinerary through one contact, or extend to Los Angeles and Tokyo.

When to Hire

The moments that specifically call for protection in Honolulu.

The year-end weeks, from Christmas into the first days of January, are when Honolulu is fullest, most expensive and most watched: the flights from Japan arrive full, the suites along Kalakaua Avenue are taken months ahead, and the beachfront restaurants and boutiques work at capacity. Golden Week in late April and early May and Obon in mid-August repeat the pattern. The Sony Open in January and the Honolulu Marathon in December bring road closures and crowds to exactly the streets our principals use.

Family stays are the quiet category: the beach day, the shopping afternoon at Ala Moana, the excursion to the North Shore and the drive back after dark are each a small exposure that a single officer and a security driver remove entirely. Weddings and celebrations bring jewellery, photographers and guests who do not all know each other to the same lawn. Second-home weeks in Kahala or Kakaako and board and incentive weeks at the resorts round out the moments where even a short stay benefits from a detail. And for families, the practical value is simple: the children see the turtles and the surf while someone else watches everything approaching them.

What a bodyguard in Honolulu costs.

As a guide, professional close protection in the United States is, in 2026, from USD 900 per day for a single principal on twelve-hour cover, with the final rate shaped by the profile, the threat picture and the season, and confirmed on enquiry with no obligation. Specialist profiles, armed requirements, short-notice mobilisation, the year-end weeks and neighbour island legs with interisland travel carry a premium. A security driver with an executive vehicle is quoted separately and, on an island with one freeway, is usually the most useful addition; team details and multi-island programmes are quoted above the base, to the brief. Payment is by card or bank transfer in USD, EUR, GBP or AED.

Bodyguard in Honolulu - Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a bodyguard in Honolulu cost?

As a guide, professional close protection in the United States starts from USD 900 per day for one officer covering a single principal on twelve hours, with the final rate shaped by the profile, the season and the brief. A security driver with an executive vehicle is quoted separately and, on an island where everything runs on one freeway, is usually the most useful addition. Armed profiles, short-notice mobilisation, the year-end and Golden Week peaks and neighbour island legs carry a premium. Multi-island itineraries are quoted as one programme, and the final rate is always confirmed on enquiry, with no obligation. Payment is by card or bank transfer.

Why use Algoz rather than hiring a Honolulu security company directly?

Hawaii has a small private security market compared with Los Angeles or New York, and most of it is built for hotels, shopping centres and events rather than for close protection of an individual. The few operators who do that work well are known to us from live assignments; the others use the same words. A client booking from Tokyo or Dubai cannot tell the difference until the detail is moving, and by then it is too late. Algoz has already made the comparison, keeps only the Hawaii providers that met our standard, composes the team for your profile, puts it under NDA, supervises it against our own doctrine and answers to you as a single point of accountability, in English or Japanese.

Is it legal to hire a bodyguard in Honolulu, and is it licensed?

Yes. Private security in Hawaii is regulated under Chapter 463 of the Hawaii Revised Statutes by the Board of Private Detectives and Guards of the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs. Guard agencies are licensed by the state and every individual guard is registered, with fingerprint background checks, mandatory training and renewal. Algoz coordinates only properly licensed operators, so your detail is fully compliant.

Can protection be armed in Honolulu?

Rarely, and only where specifically arranged in advance. Hawaii has some of the strictest firearms laws in the United States: a guard who carries a firearm on duty needs a licence to carry issued by the county police department, valid only in that county, and such licences are granted sparingly. Almost every Honolulu assignment is handled unarmed, built on planning, a skilled driver and a discreet presence. Where a brief genuinely requires armed cover we will say so, allow a minimum 30-day lead time, and be honest that it may be refused.

Do you work with clients from Japan?

Yes, and Honolulu is one of the cities where we most often do. Japan is Hawaii’s largest international market, with roughly 720,000 arrivals in 2024 and nonstop flights from Tokyo Haneda and Narita, Osaka and Nagoya. Enquiries, proposals, the schedule and the written day plan are handled in Japanese on request. Officers work in English; Hawaii has a large Japanese-speaking community and Japanese-speaking officers can be requested with notice, though we never guarantee one. The Japanese version of this page is at algozgroup.com/ja/bodyguard-honolulu.

Is a security driver included?

Usually, yes. Oahu runs on the H-1 and a single coastal road, and the drive between the airport, Waikiki, Kahala and Ko Olina is where most of a Honolulu day is spent. A security-trained driver is planned alongside the officer, the vehicle is positioned so no walk across a hotel forecourt or a car park is longer than it needs to be, and the parked rental car, the most common point of loss for visitors in Hawaii, disappears from the itinerary entirely.

Is Honolulu safe for wealthy visitors?

Honolulu is a safe city by American standards and violent crime against visitors is rare. The real risks are the documented ones: rental-car break-ins at trailheads and beach parks, theft from the beach, pickpocketing and bag snatching on Kalakaua Avenue after dark, visible street disorder in parts of Waikiki, Ala Moana and Chinatown, and the attention that fine jewellery and watches draw on an avenue built around them. For a wealthy visitor, private protection adds the layer that the police are not designed to provide: someone close, watching the approaches, and managing the movement.

How quickly can you mobilise in Honolulu?

Seven days is the minimum we ask for, and more is better. Inside that week the brief is vetted, the right officer is assigned and released from other work, and the advance work on the hotel, the villa, the venues and the routes is done properly. Hawaii has a small pool of genuinely good close protection officers, so the strongest profiles are booked first. We will always look at shorter notice, but under 48 hours is an urgency case: it carries additional fees and it cannot be guaranteed. Nobody produces a licensed officer in 24 hours. Around the year-end weeks, Golden Week, the Honolulu Marathon and the Sony Open we advise booking well ahead, and armed protection always requires the 30-day authorisation lead.

Do you handle arrivals at HNL and the private terminals?

Yes, and we recommend it. At Daniel K. Inouye International Airport we arrange a meet inside the terminal, luggage handled and counted, and a vehicle staged so the kerbside moment barely exists, which matters most on the morning arrivals from Japan when several flights land together. Principals arriving by private aircraft are met at the fixed base operators on the airport, where customs and immigration can be cleared on site and the aircraft steps are a few metres from the vehicle. Some west-side arrivals use Kalaeloa, the general aviation field near Ko Olina.

Do you provide residence and villa security in Kahala, Hawaii Kai and Kailua?

Yes. Residence work is core to our Honolulu coverage: a review of gates, beach access, lighting and camera lines, household and rental staff briefed, deliveries controlled, and a quiet protective presence from a single overnight to a standing detail. Oceanfront estates on Kahala Avenue, beach houses at Lanikai and Kailua, villas at Ko Olina and condominium residences in Kakaako are all surveyed before the first night, not after it.

Do you cover weddings, the Sony Open and the Honolulu Marathon?

Yes. Beachfront weddings are a large business in Hawaii and bring jewellery, photographers and guests to the same lawns every weekend; we agree an arrival window with the venue, walk it in advance and place an officer who reads as part of the party. The Sony Open at Waialae in January and the Honolulu Marathon in December bring road closures and crowds to Waikiki and Kahala, and corporate incentive weeks fill the resorts. All are covered under one brief.

Do you provide female officers for families?

Yes. Female close protection officers are available and well suited to family holidays, beach days, the children’s programme and principals who prefer a female officer in close proximity. Availability is better with notice, so please raise it at the enquiry stage.

Do you cover Maui, Hawaii Island, Kauai and Lanai?

Yes. The same team and the same point of contact follow the principal to Wailea and Kapalua on Maui, the Kohala Coast resorts of Hawaii Island with private arrivals at Kona, Princeville and Poipu on Kauai, and Lanai. Interisland flights, vehicles at both ends and resort security are arranged as part of the brief so protection never pauses between islands. For itineraries continuing to Los Angeles, Tokyo or New York, the transition is managed inside Algoz. Please share the full itinerary when you enquire.

Can the client choose the officer profile?

Often, yes. Given lead time we offer a selection of profiles: a low-visibility officer who reads as a family friend on the beach, a female officer for family cover, a driver-protector combination for long island days, or, with notice, an officer who speaks Japanese. Whatever the preference, the security assessment carries final authority over the composition of the detail.
