Can you hire a bodyguard in Chicago?

Yes, and within Illinois’s licensing system it is entirely lawful. Algoz arranges an IDFPR-registered close protection officer who meets you inside O’Hare or Midway or on the ramp at Chicago Executive, a security driver who knows which of the five expressways is stopped this morning and which level of Wacker Drive to use, and the same team stays with you through the hotel, the meetings in the Loop, the convention floor and the evening. Send your dates and your hotel and a confidential proposal follows within 24 hours, with the officer profile and the final rate, and no obligation attached.

Straight Answers

What people ask before enquiring.

Legality

Is it legal?

Yes. Private security in Illinois is regulated by the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation under the Private Detective, Private Alarm, Private Security, Fingerprint Vendor and Locksmith Act: contractors are licensed, officers hold the Permanent Employee Registration Card, and armed work requires the Firearm Control Card. Algoz coordinates only within that framework.

Cost

What it costs

Priced to the profile and the itinerary. Chicago is a business market first, and most briefs are met by one officer and a security driver for the working week; convention weeks carry a premium because the city sells out at once. The final rate comes with the proposal; an idea of day rates is in the FAQ below.

Speed

How fast

Plan on seven days. Vetting the brief, releasing the right officer and completing the advance work takes that long. Under 48 hours means additional fees and no guarantee of cover. Armed authorisation needs a minimum 30-day lead.

Weapons

Armed or unarmed

Both are lawful in Illinois with the correct IDFPR registration and Firearm Control Card. Most Chicago details run unarmed and low-profile; armed officers are arranged in advance on assessment, with a minimum 30-day lead, never assumed and never sold around.

Coverage

Where we cover

The Gold Coast, Streeterville, River North, the Loop, the West Loop and Lincoln Park first. Then the North Shore from Evanston to Lake Forest, Oak Brook and the western suburbs, and by road Milwaukee, Madison, Indianapolis, Detroit and the Michigan lakeshore, with the same contact and the same brief.

Language

Who you get

Vetted Illinois officers, many from the military, the Chicago Police Department, federal law enforcement and corporate executive protection, working in English, with Spanish and Polish common. Coordination in Arabic, Russian, Chinese and French is available, and the written day plan comes in your language on request.

The Third City

A business capital with a reputation that belongs to other neighborhoods.

Chicago is the business capital of the American Midwest and one of the great cities of the world: the trading floors and the law firms of the Loop, the towers along Wacker Drive, the headquarters that have settled in the West Loop and Fulton Market, the largest convention centre in North America at McCormick Place, the museums and the orchestra, and a lakefront that is the most beautiful urban shoreline in the country. It is also a city with a reputation for violence that visitors arrive worrying about, and the honest answer is that the reputation belongs to neighbourhoods on the South and West Sides that a visiting principal will never see. Inside the band where our clients live, dine and work, the Gold Coast, Streeterville, River North, the Loop and the West Loop, the risks are the ordinary big-city ones with a Chicago accent: the robbery and retail theft crews that have worked Michigan Avenue and Oak Street, carjackings that peaked in recent years and still occur in the central districts, pickpockets at the station and on the lakefront, the crowds of the convention weeks and the summer festivals, and a winter that rewrites the map for days.

Algoz coordinates bodyguard services in Chicago through vetted, Illinois-licensed operators with genuine local knowledge: officers who know which level of Wacker Drive is the asset and which is the trap, where a vehicle may legally stand on Michigan Avenue at seven in the evening, how McCormick Place empties twenty thousand people onto the South Loop approaches at once, and which underground connections and covered entrances exist when the wind off the lake decides the schedule. Our clients are executives and delegations from the Gulf, Europe, Asia and Latin America at the headquarters and the trading houses, families in residence on the Gold Coast or the North Shore for a posting or a season, patients at the Northwestern and University of Chicago hospitals, patrons of the symphony and the museum galas, exhibitors and buyers at the conventions, and the assistants and family offices who book for all of them. The brief is given once; from the aircraft steps to the last dinner in the West Loop, one team plans, drives and covers it.

The Security Environment

Why hire a bodyguard in Chicago?

Street

Robbery & Retail Theft Crews

Organised crews have worked the Magnificent Mile and Oak Street for watches, bags and store stock, sometimes in daylight, sometimes following a target from a boutique to a car. The pattern targets visible value and a visitor walking alone, which is exactly what an officer and a positioned vehicle remove.

Vehicles

Carjacking

Chicago recorded one of the sharpest carjacking surges in the country in recent years, and although the numbers have fallen, the pattern persists in and near the central districts, at gas stations, at curbs and in garages. A security driver who never leaves the vehicle and never idles where he should not is the answer.

Crowds

Union Station, the Lakefront & the Mile

Union Station, the Riverwalk, Millennium Park and the Michigan Avenue sidewalks concentrate pickpocketing and distraction theft into crowds where a visitor’s attention is on the Bean rather than the bag, and the summer brings large unplanned youth gatherings downtown that end badly for bystanders.

Profile

Visible Wealth

Oak Street, the Michigan Avenue flagships and the jewellers of the Gold Coast are where serious pieces are bought and worn, and the hotels of the Gold Coast and the restaurants of the West Loop are where a recognisable face is read at a glance. The walk back to the car is where it matters.

Season

Convention & Festival Weeks

McCormick Place fills the city several times a year, Lollapalooza closes Grant Park in August, the Marathon takes the streets in October and the Auto Show runs in February. Each fills every hotel, closes roads and pulls the city’s security resources onto a single site.

Winter

Weather as a Route Factor

Lake-effect snow, ice on the expressway ramps and a wind off the lake that turns a short walk from a lobby into something a principal does not want to do. Winter is not a detail here; it is the reason a local team is worth paying for.

01 —

The Gold Coast, Michigan Avenue & the hotels

Most of our Chicago principals sleep, shop and dine inside a small band of the near North Side: the Peninsula and the Four Seasons above the Michigan Avenue flagships, the Waldorf Astoria on its quiet Gold Coast block, the Langham on the river, the newer hotels of Streeterville and River North, and the restaurants of the West Loop and Fulton Market a few minutes west. Oak Street and the Magnificent Mile hold the city’s luxury retail in a few hundred metres, and a shopping afternoon is handled the way we handle Madison Avenue: private appointments so pieces are viewed in a salon rather than at a counter, the vehicle positioned where it may legally pause on a street that rarely offers one, purchases carried by the team rather than the principal, and the short walk back to the hotel reduced to a few observed metres, because the robbery crews that have worked this district work exactly that walk. A detail here is quiet choreography: arrival timing agreed with the hotel’s own security, the floor and the elevator planned, and the evening at a Gold Coast table covered by an officer who sits where the approaches are visible.

02 —

O’Hare, Midway, Chicago Executive & the private fields

O’Hare is one of the busiest airports on earth and the point at which most Chicago itineraries either start well or start badly: a car booked against the scheduled landing time, a principal on a curb with luggage while a driver loops a parking structure, and forty minutes gone before anything has begun. We work the opposite way round. The inbound is watched in real time, the officer waits inside the building at a point agreed with you, the cases are counted onto the vehicle, and the Kennedy is treated as one option among several rather than the only road. Midway sits to the south-west and is genuinely closer to downtown, which makes it a favourite for short domestic legs. Principals arriving by private aircraft land where the ground plan puts them: Chicago Executive at Wheeling for the North Shore and the corporate belt north of the city, DuPage for the western suburbs and Oak Brook, Gary across the state line, and the business aviation terminals at both commercial fields. Every field has its own handling agents and its own view on how close a vehicle may come to an aircraft, and our coordinator speaks to your handler directly rather than through you. See executive transportation in Chicago.

03 —

The Loop, Wacker Drive & business Chicago

Business Chicago is compact and vertical: the trading and legal towers of the Loop, the offices along Wacker Drive, the West Loop and Fulton Market where the newer headquarters and the serious restaurants have settled, and River North immediately across the water. The distances are trivial and the last block is not. Wacker Drive runs on two levels, and the lower level is a genuine asset in the hands of a driver who knows it and a liability in the hands of one who does not; loading zones are enforced, Michigan Avenue offers almost nowhere to pause, and hotel forecourts fill at exactly the hours everyone wants them. Protective work here is measured in discretion rather than presence: an officer who reads as staff in a lift lobby, credentials and building access arranged before the day begins, a security driver who turns the drive to Oak Brook, Schaumburg or the plants of the industrial belt into working time, and device and conversation discipline treated as part of the detail, because in a transaction week at a trading house the itinerary itself is a leak. For a delegation from the Gulf, Europe or Asia, the vehicles, the officers and the hotel floor are planned as one programme rather than booked as a stack.

04 —

McCormick Place & the convention weeks

McCormick Place is the largest convention centre in North America, and when it is full the whole city feels it: hotel inventory tightens, the South Loop approaches back up, and vehicles that would ordinarily be available three hours ahead are simply gone. For an exhibitor, a buyer or an executive working the floor, the exposure is the circuit: between halls, between the convention centre and a Gold Coast hotel, from the floor to a dinner to a late reception, with badges, credentials and a schedule that moves without notice. We plan convention weeks backwards from the departure rather than forwards from the arrival, because leaving is always the harder half: twenty thousand people finish a keynote at the same moment and want a car in the same two minutes. The entrance the vehicle uses is agreed in advance, the position where it may legally hold while the principal is inside is known, the party reaches it without crossing the crowd, the stand is covered while the principal is on it, and the dinners and receptions of the week, where the real business is done and the real exposure happens, are covered by an officer who reads as part of the company.

05 —

Lincoln Park, the North Shore & the residential city

Chicago’s money lives along the lake: in the Gold Coast and Streeterville towers, in the houses of Lincoln Park, and north along the shore in Evanston, Wilmette, Winnetka, Glencoe and Lake Forest, where the estates sit on ravines and the gates are discreet because the owners are. Families in residence for a posting or a season, patients at the Northwestern, Rush and University of Chicago hospitals with a family in the city for weeks, executives who prefer to sleep on the North Shore and parents of students at Northwestern and the University of Chicago base themselves here, and the brief changes with them: the school run, the hospital appointment, the drive down the Edens into the city each morning, the weekend at the lake, and a residence where seclusion is the point and seclusion is the vulnerability. Residence work here is advance work: access, lighting and camera lines reviewed, household staff briefed, deliveries controlled, and an officer present in a way that neighbours and guests never register, with female officers often the right choice for the family and medical days. See medical travel protection and student protection.

06 —

Winter, the lakefront & the summer festivals

Chicago has two seasons that rewrite a protection plan. The winter is not a decorative detail: lake-effect snow arrives quickly and unevenly, the expressway ramps ice before the roads do, and a wind off the lake turns a short walk from a lobby into something a principal genuinely does not want to do, which is why vehicles run on proper winter tyres, cabins are warmed before collection, airport windows carry extra time in a storm week, and the officer knows which underground connections and covered entrances exist between a hotel and a tower. The summer is the opposite problem: the lakefront, the Riverwalk and Millennium Park fill, Lollapalooza closes Grant Park for a weekend in August, the Air and Water Show and the Marathon take the lakeshore and the streets, the arena nights at the United Center empty onto the West Side, and large unplanned gatherings downtown have ended badly for bystanders more than once. Each is a routing problem before it is a security problem, and each is planned for rather than discovered: the alternative road, the covered entrance, the departure that begins before the crowd moves.

07 —

How a Chicago detail is actually run

It starts with your itinerary, not with a headcount. We read the dates, the profile, the hotel and the season, then propose the smallest team that genuinely covers it: most often one officer with a security driver for the working week, sometimes a two-officer rotation for a convention or a gala, occasionally a full detail with advance work at every venue and a North Shore or Milwaukee leg. Every officer is IDFPR-registered, NDA-bound and briefed to the Algoz standard; every hotel, residence and venue is walked before you arrive; the winter alternative is in the plan before the forecast needs it; and one Algoz contact stays with the engagement from proposal to the departure flight, so you are never managing an unfamiliar vendor in an unfamiliar city. The proposal, the schedule and the written day plan are provided in Arabic, Russian, Chinese, Spanish or French on request. How close protection works.

08 —

Beyond Chicago: Milwaukee, the lakeshore & the rest of America

A great many Chicago engagements do not stay in Chicago. The North Shore and the corporate campuses at Oak Brook, Schaumburg and Naperville are routine day work; Milwaukee is a straightforward run north and regularly a morning meeting and a lunch return; Madison, Indianapolis, Detroit and the Michigan lakeshore around New Buffalo and Harbor Country are all comfortably reached by road, and for a party of four with luggage the road is frequently the better answer than a short flight once the airport hours are counted honestly. Driver hours, rest planning and overnight positioning are built into the quote rather than discovered at the far end. For itineraries continuing to New York, Miami, Los Angeles or Washington, the handover happens inside Algoz, not on your desk, with a new state’s licence and the same brief waiting at the other end.

Illinois Licensing (IDFPR)

Why protection in Chicago must be licensed.

Private security in Illinois is regulated under the Private Detective, Private Alarm, Private Security, Fingerprint Vendor and Locksmith Act, administered by the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR). A company that provides protective services for hire must hold a Private Security Contractor licence; every individual officer must hold a Permanent Employee Registration Card, the PERC, issued after fingerprinting and a background check; and anyone who carries a firearm on duty must hold a Firearm Control Card, issued only after the state’s firearms training and only through a licensed employer. The City of Chicago layers its own rules on top. An unlicensed individual cannot lawfully provide protective services for hire in Illinois, and a bodyguard brought from the Gulf, Europe or Asia cannot simply work here; engaging outside the licensed framework exposes a principal to legal risk and voids meaningful liability cover.

Algoz coordinates protection in Chicago exclusively through this licensed framework, with every operative vetted, NDA-bound and discreet. See how our close protection works, read the state-by-state guide to protection in the USA, combine it with VIP concierge across the United States, add secure transport in Chicago, or extend to New York and Washington.

When to Hire

The moments that specifically call for protection in Chicago.

The convention weeks at McCormick Place are the obvious ones: every hotel full, the South Loop approaches stopped, and the executives on the floor the ones whose itineraries leak. Lollapalooza weekend in August, the Marathon in October, the Auto Show in February and the arena nights at the United Center each concentrate crowds and closures into the districts our principals use. Transaction weeks at the trading houses and the law firms of the Loop are the quiet category, where confidentiality matters more than presence and the detail works in the background.

A storm week in winter, when the airport windows stretch and the walk from the lobby is the exposure; the shopping afternoon on Oak Street and the Mile, where the crews work; hospital stays at Northwestern and the University of Chicago; school terms at the universities and the North Shore schools; residential postings on the Gold Coast and the North Shore; and the arrival at O’Hare after a long flight round out the moments where even a short stay benefits from an officer and a security driver. And for families, the practical value is simple: the children see the Bean and the lake while someone else watches everything approaching them.

What a bodyguard in Chicago costs.

As a guide, professional close protection in the United States is, in 2026, from USD 900 per day for a single principal on twelve-hour cover, the market base, with the final rate shaped by the profile, the threat picture and the season, and confirmed on enquiry with no obligation. Armed profiles, specialist officers, short-notice mobilisation, the convention weeks and the storm weeks carry a premium. A security driver with an executive vehicle is quoted separately and, in a city whose airports sit on opposite expressways and whose winter decides the schedule, is usually the most useful addition; team details and multi-city programmes are quoted above the base, to the brief. Payment is by card or bank transfer in USD, EUR, GBP or AED.

Bodyguard in Chicago - Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a bodyguard in Chicago cost?

As a guide, professional close protection in the United States starts from USD 900 per day for one officer covering a single principal on twelve hours, with the final rate shaped by the profile, the season and the brief. A security driver with an executive vehicle is quoted separately and, in a city whose airports sit on opposite expressways and whose winter decides the schedule, is usually the most useful addition. Armed profiles, short-notice mobilisation, the convention weeks and the storm weeks carry a premium. Multi-city itineraries are quoted as one programme, and the final rate is always confirmed on enquiry, with no obligation. Payment is by card or bank transfer.

Why use Algoz rather than hiring a local security company in Chicago directly?

Illinois has a large, well-regulated security industry built mostly for static guarding, retail, events and the conventions, and only a handful of its licensed contractors do genuine close protection to an international standard. From Dubai, London, Shanghai or São Paulo they all look the same, and the difference only shows once a detail is moving between O’Hare, a Gold Coast hotel and McCormick Place in a February storm. Algoz has already made the comparison, keeps only the Illinois providers that met our standard on live assignments, composes the team for your profile, puts it under NDA, supervises it against our own doctrine and answers to you as a single point of accountability, in your language.

Is it legal to hire a bodyguard in Chicago, and is it licensed?

Yes. Private security in Illinois is regulated by the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation under the Private Detective, Private Alarm, Private Security, Fingerprint Vendor and Locksmith Act: contractors hold a licence, every officer holds a Permanent Employee Registration Card issued after fingerprinting and a background check, and armed work requires the Firearm Control Card. Algoz coordinates only properly licensed operators, so your detail is fully compliant.

Can protection be armed in Chicago?

It can, where specifically arranged in advance with an officer holding the Illinois Firearm Control Card and where a threat assessment supports it, with a minimum 30-day lead time and no guarantee. Most Chicago assignments are nonetheless handled unarmed, built on planning, a skilled driver and a discreet presence, and we will tell you honestly which your itinerary actually requires.

Is Chicago safe for wealthy visitors?

Yes, inside the districts a visiting principal actually uses, and violent crime against visitors is rare. Chicago’s reputation for violence belongs to neighbourhoods on the South and West Sides that a visitor will never see. The real risks in the Gold Coast, Streeterville, River North, the Loop and the West Loop are the documented ones: robbery and retail theft crews that have worked Michigan Avenue and Oak Street, carjackings that peaked in recent years and still occur in the central districts, pickpocketing at Union Station and on the lakefront, large unplanned gatherings downtown in summer, and a winter that turns a short walk into an exposure. For a wealthy visitor, private protection adds the layer that the police are not designed to provide: someone close, watching the approaches, and managing the movement.

Do you work with clients from the Gulf, Europe, Asia and Latin America?

Yes, often. Chicago draws executives and delegations to its trading houses, headquarters and conventions, families to its hospitals and universities, and patrons to its orchestra and museums from across the world. Enquiries, proposals, the schedule and the written day plan are handled in Arabic, Russian, Chinese, Spanish or French on request. Officers work in English, with Spanish and Polish common; officers in other languages can be requested with notice, though we never guarantee one.

Is a security driver included?

Usually, yes. O’Hare and Midway sit on opposite expressways, five roads funnel toward the same interchange west of the Loop, Wacker Drive runs on two levels, Michigan Avenue rarely offers a legal pause, and from December to March the weather decides the route. A security-trained driver is planned alongside the officer, the vehicle runs on winter tyres and is positioned where it can legally stand, and the late drive back from the West Loop or the United Center receives particular attention, because that is the window a follow-home or a carjacking exploits.

How quickly can you mobilise in Chicago?

Seven days is the minimum we ask for, and more is better. Inside that week the brief is vetted, the right officer is assigned and released from other work, and the advance work on the hotel, the venues and the routes is done properly. We will always look at shorter notice, but under 48 hours is an urgency case: it carries additional fees and it cannot be guaranteed. Nobody produces a licensed officer in 24 hours. Around the major conventions at McCormick Place, Lollapalooza and the Marathon we advise booking well ahead, because the city’s best officers are committed months in advance, and armed protection always requires the 30-day authorisation lead.

Do you handle arrivals at O’Hare, Midway and Chicago Executive?

Yes, and we recommend it. At O’Hare and Midway we watch the inbound in real time, meet inside the building at a point agreed with you, count the cases onto the vehicle and stage it so the curbside moment barely exists, with the expressway chosen for the hour rather than the map. Principals arriving by private aircraft are met at Chicago Executive, DuPage, Gary or the business aviation terminals at the commercial fields, where the aircraft steps are a few metres from the vehicle. Our coordinator speaks to your ground handler directly rather than through you.

Do you provide protection at McCormick Place and during the convention weeks?

Yes. Convention work is a Chicago speciality: credentials and floor access arranged before the morning, the stand covered while the principal is on it, the entrance and the holding position agreed in advance, the party reaching the vehicle without crossing the crowd, and the dinners and receptions of the week, where the real exposure happens, covered by an officer who reads as part of the company. McCormick Place, the Merchandise Mart, Navy Pier and the downtown hotel corridor are all covered under one brief.

Do you provide residence and hotel security on the Gold Coast and the North Shore?

Yes. Residence work is core to our Chicago coverage: a review of building access, elevators and parking, or of gates, lighting and camera lines at a house, household and building staff briefed, deliveries controlled, and a quiet protective presence from a single overnight to a standing detail. Suites at the Gold Coast hotels, apartments in Streeterville, houses in Lincoln Park and estates in Winnetka, Glencoe and Lake Forest are all surveyed before the first night, not after it.

Do you provide female officers for families?

Yes. Female close protection officers are available and well suited to family postings, hospital and school days, shopping and principals who prefer a female officer in close proximity. Availability is better with notice, so please raise it at the enquiry stage.

Do you cover the North Shore, Milwaukee and the rest of the Midwest?

Yes. The same team and the same point of contact follow the principal to the North Shore, Oak Brook, Schaumburg and Naperville, to Milwaukee and Madison, to Indianapolis and Detroit and to the Michigan lakeshore, with driver hours, rest planning and overnight positioning built into the quote. For itineraries continuing to New York, Washington, Miami or Los Angeles, the transition is managed inside Algoz. Please share the full itinerary when you enquire.

Can the client choose the officer profile?

Often, yes. Given lead time we offer a selection of profiles: a low-visibility officer who reads as staff in a Loop lift lobby, a female officer for family or medical cover, a driver-protector combination for the winter weeks, an armed officer where the assessment supports it, or, with notice, an officer who speaks Spanish, Polish, Arabic or Russian. Whatever the preference, the security assessment carries final authority over the composition of the detail.
