Can you hire a bodyguard in Barcelona?

Yes, and in Spain it is a fully regulated arrangement. How to check that a Barcelona bodyguard is legal, before the first name is shared.

Three things decide the question in Spain, and all three come from Ley 5/2014 de Seguridad Privada. The company: accompanying and protecting a specific person is a private security activity (article 5.1.b) that only an authorised private security company may provide (article 5.2), and the company must be registered for personal protection, not only for guarding. The officer: the private protection officer is a defined profession (article 26), and each one needs a prior habilitation from the Ministry of the Interior, processed by the Policía Nacional and shown on the tarjeta de identidad profesional, the TIP card the officer must carry on duty (articles 27 and 39). The service: every personal protection service needs prior authorisation from the Ministry of the Interior or the competent regional body (article 43.3), which for a service performed in Catalonia is the Generalitat.

There is no freelance route. Spanish law places every private protection officer inside the security company that employs them (article 38.4), so a bodyguard who offers his services directly, by message or through a hotel desk, is working outside the law. The risk is not only his. A client who knowingly contracts an unauthorised company or an unlicensed person commits a very serious offence (article 59.1, letters a and h), with a fine of EUR 20,001 to 100,000 (article 63.1.a). A UK SIA licence, a US state permit or a Gulf security card gives no right to work in Spain either. Qualifications from other EU and EEA states can be recognised, but only after verification by the Ministry and with sufficient Spanish.

Ask for the company’s authorisation and the officer’s TIP before the engagement, and for the authorisation of your service before the first day: it is applied for once your brief is confirmed. Bodyguard, close protection or security driver in Barcelona?

Bodyguard is the everyday word and the one most people search. In Spanish law the person doing the work is a private protection officer, a profession of its own under Ley 5/2014 and distinct from a security guard, holding a Ministry of the Interior habilitation shown on a TIP card and working for an authorised security company. Close protection is the professional discipline behind the word: advance work, route and venue planning, positioning and counter-surveillance, not physical presence alone. Executive protection is the corporate framing of the same work, usually including the driver and the vehicle.

Private security and personal security are broader words that also cover static guarding, event staffing and residential alarms. Those are different authorisations and a different skill from moving with a principal, and confusing them is the most common mistake we see. A security detail means more than one officer. A security driver is not a bodyguard in Spanish law, whatever anyone calls him, but in Barcelona he often carries more of the real work than the officer: the El Prat run, the Rondes, the low emission zone and the car held where it can reach you.

Why protection in Barcelona must be licensed.

In Spain, private security is governed by Ley 5/2014 de Seguridad Privada, and personal protection sits at its strictest end. The 1994 regulation, Real Decreto 2364/1994, still applies wherever it does not conflict with the 2014 law, and it sets the tone: each protection contract is authorised individually and exceptionally, on the risk the application describes, and the decision fixes the duration, the number of officers and whether they carry weapons. An urgent case has a provisional route (article 29 of the regulation), but it remains an authorisation, not a formality.

In Catalonia the Generalitat authorises services performed in Catalonia. The Mossos d’Esquadra report on whether the service is justified, and the Direcció General d’Administració de Seguretat grants the authorisation; a service that covers more than one region, such as Barcelona followed by Madrid or Marbella, is authorised by the State. On duty, a private protection officer protects; he does not police. Article 33 allows no identity checks and no detentions except where essential after an actual or manifestly attempted attack, and anyone detained goes straight to the police. Personal protection is not on the list of services that must be armed: an officer carries a firearm only if the service authorisation provides for it, under a type C arms licence, discreetly and on duty only.

What actually happens to visitors in Barcelona, and what the officer does about it.

Most of what happens to visitors in Barcelona is theft, not violence, and the numbers are falling. Mossos d’Esquadra open data recorded 87,342 thefts in the city in 2025, 7.5% fewer than in 2024, with the Eixample and Ciutat Vella together accounting for 55% of them. The city’s Junta Local de Seguretat reported recorded crime down 11.2% in the first half of 2026, and thefts down about 21%.

Where it happens is just as clear. According to Junta Local de Seguretat figures reported by the newspaper Ara, about 40% of thefts in 2025 took place in shops, 36.4% on the street and 20% on public transport, and about 70% of violent robberies were snatches. On Mossos d’Esquadra open data, Ciutat Vella alone accounted for almost a third of the city’s violent robberies in 2025. Watches are a category of their own: Ara, citing police data, reported more than 1,000 violent watch robberies in 2025, almost three a day, and noted that a tug on the strap legally counts as violence. The law has tightened too. Since 10 April 2026, under Ley Orgánica 1/2026, a thief with at least three prior final convictions for similar offences faces the full theft penalty even for items worth EUR 400 or less, and stealing a mobile phone is now an aggravated theft.

Most of it is predictable, and predictable risk can be planned out. The car replaces the metro and the taxi rank. The officer stands on the approach side in the Gothic Quarter and at the Boqueria, chooses the terrace table with a wall behind it, and watches the street so the watch can stay on the wrist. Purchases are carried by the team, and the phone stays in a pocket rather than on the table. A private protection officer in Spain has no power to stop and question people, and may detain someone only after an actual or attempted attack, so the value of the work lies before the approach, not after it. The moments that specifically call for protection in Barcelona.

Congress weeks are the clearest case. When Fira Gran Via is full, hotels and taxi ranks are saturated, executives are publicly listed as speakers, and a delegation without a plan spends the week reacting to it. Product launches add cameras and a known location. Summer, from June through the festival season into September, is when the city is busiest and the waterfront, the old city and the beach clubs are at their fullest.

Family visits are the quiet category that benefits most: parents want to look at Gaudí rather than watch bags, and one officer with a security driver changes the texture of the whole week. Yacht and cruise calls compress an arrival into a fixed hour on an open quay. Long-stay residences in Pedralbes and Sarrià need pattern discipline more than presence.
