Why the Milan to St. Moritz transfer is a mountain road, not a motorway.

St. Moritz sits in the Engadin at 1,800 metres, and every road from Milan climbs a pass to reach it. The usual route runs north past Lake Como to Chiavenna and over the Maloja Pass, about three hours in good conditions; the alternative goes by Lecco and the Valtellina to Tirano and over the Bernina. Both are beautiful, both are closed or chained when the weather turns, and both end in a resort where a wrong vehicle, a missing Swiss vignette or a driver without winter tyres becomes the story of the holiday.

Algoz arranges chauffeured transfers from Milan, Malpensa, Linate and Bergamo to St. Moritz and the whole Engadin, in SUVs and V-Class vans equipped for winter, with skis and luggage handled, the pass checked on the day, and a licensed security driver where the principal's profile asks for one. The chalet or the hotel is briefed before you leave the airport.

  • Collected inside the terminal at Malpensa, Linate or Bergamo, or at your Milan hotel, with the vehicle already positioned
  • Range Rover, Mercedes GLS or similar SUV and V-Class vans with winter tyres, chains on board, and roof or interior space for skis
  • The Maloja and the Bernina checked the morning of travel, with the Bernina Express train from Tirano as the honest alternative when a pass is closed
  • Swiss vignette, border formalities and the Engadin's own parking rules handled by the driver, not by you
  • Chalet gate or hotel arrival agreed in advance: Badrutt's Palace, Kulm, Suvretta House, Carlton and the private chalets of Suvretta and Champfer
  • Security driver option: a licensed close protection officer at the wheel for protected principals over the passes
Straight Answers

What people ask before booking a Milan to St. Moritz chauffeur.

Time

How long it takes

About three hours from Milan or Malpensa to St. Moritz by the Maloja in good conditions, a little more by the Bernina. Snow, chains and the Christmas traffic add to it, and we quote the hour honestly rather than optimistically.

Cost

What it costs

A transfer is quoted per journey by vehicle class, with the pass, the season and a late or early hour shaping the figure. A driver held in the Engadin is quoted per day. A security driver is priced as close protection, from EUR 850 per day.

Vehicles

Which vehicle

In winter an SUV with winter tyres and chains, or a V-Class for a family with skis; in summer a saloon is fine on the Maloja. We never send a vehicle to the Engadin in January that was not chosen for January.

Route

Maloja or Bernina

The Maloja via Chiavenna is shorter and the usual choice. The Bernina via Tirano is the alternative when the Maloja is closed, and the Bernina Express train from Tirano is a serious option in heavy snow. The driver decides on the morning, with you informed.

Border

Switzerland

Italy to Switzerland is a border with passport checks and customs. The driver carries the vignette and knows the crossing; you carry your passport, and anything you are importing, declared.

Notice

How far ahead

A few days in the quiet months, a week for a security driver, and well ahead for Christmas, New Year, the Snow Polo and White Turf weekends in January and February when the Engadin's vehicles and drivers are committed early.

The Maloja route: Como, Chiavenna and the climb

From Milan the road runs north past Lake Como to Chiavenna, crosses into Switzerland and climbs the Maloja Pass in a series of hairpins that reward a driver who has done them in the dark and in snow. It is the shorter route, about three hours in good conditions, and the normal choice. The Maloja is kept open through most winters, but it closes in heavy snowfall and chains are mandatory when the sign says so. A driver who knows the pass checks it before breakfast and tells you before you leave the hotel.

The Bernina route and the train from Tirano

The alternative runs by Lecco and the Valtellina to Tirano, crosses into Switzerland and climbs the Bernina Pass past the glacier. It is a little longer and higher, and it is the route when the Maloja is closed. From Tirano the Bernina Express railway climbs the same valley in any weather, and in a serious storm the honest answer is a chauffeur to Tirano, the train to St. Moritz and a vehicle waiting at the other end. We will tell you when that is the better plan.

Winter: tyres, chains and the Christmas road

Between November and April the Engadin is a winter resort and the road to it is a winter road. Winter tyres are required, chains must be on board, and on the worst days they are needed. The Christmas and New Year fortnight puts the whole of northern Italy on the same road at the same hour; a transfer that leaves Malpensa at the wrong time on the 23rd of December is a transfer that arrives for dinner on the 24th. We choose the vehicle for January and the hour for the traffic.

Summer: the Engadin by road and the lakes on the way

From June to September the passes are open, the hairpins are dry, and the Milan to St. Moritz road is one of the finest drives in Europe. A saloon is comfortable, a stop in Chiavenna or at the Maloja viewpoint costs nothing, and Lake Como is on the way for lunch. Summer in the Engadin is hiking, golf, sailing on Silvaplana and the Festival da Jazz, and a driver held for the week turns the valley into a day-trip radius.

The border and the vignette

Switzerland is not in the European Union and the crossing at Castasegna or Campocologno is a real border: passports, customs, and the Swiss motorway vignette that the vehicle must display. Our drivers carry the vignette and know the crossing; you carry your passport and declare what needs declaring, which for most visitors is nothing. For a non-EU passport the Schengen stamp is not an issue, since Switzerland is in the Schengen area, but the ninety-day rule keeps counting.

When the driver is also the protection

For some principals the vehicle is the security plan, and on a mountain road the security driver earns the title. A licensed GPG officer at the wheel on the Italian side, working with a Swiss-licensed partner in the Engadin where the brief requires it, chooses the route with alternatives, times the pass, handles the chalet arrival as a protective movement, and continues as residential cover at the house. St. Moritz in January is a small town full of recognisable people, and the ones who are not recognised are the ones who planned it.

Samedan, Malpensa and the private aviation picture

Engadin Airport at Samedan is minutes from St. Moritz and takes private jets when the weather allows, which in winter it sometimes does not; Malpensa and Zurich are the diversions. We meet private flights at Samedan with the vehicle at the apron, and when Samedan closes we meet the diversion and drive the pass. A party arriving on a commercial flight at Malpensa and a principal landing at Samedan are brought to the same chalet on one coordinated movement.

How a Milan to St. Moritz transfer is run

It starts with the date and the flight, because the month decides the vehicle and the hour decides the road. We read the party, the skis, the luggage and the chalet address, choose the SUV or the V-Class, confirm winter equipment, agree the gate with the house, and brief the driver the day before with the pass forecast. On the morning the driver checks the Maloja and the Bernina, chooses, and tells you. If the flight moves, the car moves. One coordinator from the airport to the chalet door and back.

The Engadin by Season

When the road to St. Moritz needs a plan.

Christmas and New Year

The peak fortnight

Every chalet full, every road busy, and the Malpensa to St. Moritz transfer at its slowest. Book with the flights and travel at the hour we suggest.

January

Snow Polo

The Snow Polo World Cup on the frozen lake brings the resort to capacity for a weekend. Vehicles, drivers and chalet staff are committed early.

February

White Turf

Horse racing on the lake over three Sundays. The town is full, the road is winter, and the right driver is the one who already has the hotel's parking arranged.

March

Spring skiing and the Skimarathon

The best light of the season and the Engadin Skimarathon weekend. Passes usually open, chains still on board.

June to September

Summer

Passes dry, the drive at its finest, Lake Como on the way, and the Festival da Jazz in July. A saloon is enough; a driver for the week is better.

Shoulder months

May, October, November

Quiet roads, hotels closed for maintenance, and weather that can turn a pass in an afternoon. We check before you leave.

How It Works

Date, flight, vehicle, pass, chalet.

Step 01

The brief

Dates, flight or Milan address, the chalet or hotel, the party, skis and luggage. Under NDA before a chalet address is shared.

Step 02

The vehicle

SUV or V-Class with winter equipment for the month, a saloon in summer, chosen for the pass and the luggage rather than the catalogue.

Step 03

The gate

Chalet entrance or hotel arrival agreed with the house, the hour confirmed, the parking arranged in a town that has very little.

Step 04

The morning

Maloja and Bernina checked, the route chosen, you informed, the vehicle positioned early at the terminal or the hotel.

Step 05

The transfer

Met inside, skis and luggage handled, the pass driven by someone who knows it, the chalet staff expecting you.

Step 06

The stay and the return

A driver held for the days you want one, Samedan or Malpensa for the flight home, and the next destination planned by the same desk.

Excellence, Discreetly Delivered

“The road to St. Moritz is three hours in summer and whatever the mountain decides in January. The driver who knows the difference is the service.”

For Clients Arriving from the US

Your US security detail cannot work in St. Moritz. Ours can.

Licensing

Why your home team stops at the border

Italy licenses personal protection through Prefettura-authorised security institutes under the TULPS, and the officer on the ground is a sworn Guardia Particolare Giurata. A US executive protection agent, however good, has no standing to work in St. Moritz, cannot be insured for it, and would put the principal at risk of a stop that ends the visit. What we do instead: an officer licensed here, briefed by us against your itinerary, who works alongside your security director rather than replacing them.

Standards

Officers who work the way your US team does

English-speaking as standard, insured through the licensed institute that employs them, NDA-bound, and run to the same advance, arrival and departure discipline a US executive protection team expects. Your security director gets a named coordinator and a written plan before anyone arrives, and the officer reports to that plan, not around it.

Practicalities

Car plus officer, and a reply on your clock

Most US visits are best covered by one security-trained driver with an executive vehicle, adding a second officer for events, show weeks and evenings out. Rates are quoted in EUR, with an indicative USD figure alongside for visitors from outside Europe. A person reads every message and replies, usually within two hours and always within 24, on Eastern and Pacific hours as well as ours.

Good to Know

Milan to St. Moritz Transfer - Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to drive from Milan to St. Moritz?

About three hours from Milan or Malpensa by the Maloja Pass in good conditions, a little more by the Bernina. Snow, chains, the border and the Christmas fortnight add time, and we quote the hour honestly rather than optimistically.

How much does a private transfer from Milan to St. Moritz cost?

It is quoted per journey by vehicle class and season, with an airport collection, a winter-equipped SUV and the peak dates shaping the figure. A driver held in the Engadin is quoted per day. A security driver is priced as close protection, from EUR 850 per day. One written figure before you commit.

Which airport is best for St. Moritz?

Malpensa for most international arrivals, about three hours away by road; Zurich is a similar distance from the north; Engadin Airport at Samedan takes private flights minutes from the resort when the weather allows. Tell us the flight and we will tell you the road.

Is the road to St. Moritz open in winter?

Usually, yes. The Maloja and the Bernina are kept open through most of the winter, with closures in heavy snowfall and chains mandatory when signed. The driver checks both passes on the morning of travel, and the Bernina Express train from Tirano is the alternative in a serious storm.

What vehicle do you use in winter?

An SUV such as a Range Rover or Mercedes GLS, or a V-Class for a family with skis, with winter tyres fitted and chains on board. In summer a saloon is comfortable. We never send a vehicle to the Engadin in January that was not chosen for January.

Do you handle skis and sports equipment?

Yes. The vehicle is chosen for the equipment as well as the party, skis go inside or on the roof, and the chalet or hotel ski room is told what is arriving.

Do I need a passport to cross into Switzerland?

Yes. Switzerland is in the Schengen area but not in the European Union, and the crossing is a real border with passport and customs checks. The driver carries the Swiss motorway vignette; you carry your passport and declare anything that needs declaring.

Can the driver stay with us in St. Moritz for the week?

Yes, and it is the arrangement we recommend for a stay of more than a night. A daily as-directed chauffeur holds the vehicle for your day in a resort with very little parking: the slopes, Pontresina for dinner, Samedan for a flight, a day over to Lake Como.

Can you provide a security driver for the transfer?

Yes. A licensed close protection officer at the wheel on the Italian side, working with a Swiss-licensed partner in the Engadin where the brief requires it. The route is chosen with alternatives, the chalet arrival is handled as a protective movement, and residential cover can continue at the house.

Do you meet private jets at Samedan?

Yes, with the vehicle at the apron when the handler allows. When Samedan closes for weather, which happens in winter, we meet the diversion at Malpensa or Zurich and drive the pass, and the chalet is told either way.

How much notice do you need?

A few days in the quiet months, a week for a security driver, and well ahead for Christmas, New Year, Snow Polo in January and White Turf in February. Under 48 hours is possible with an urgency fee and no guarantee.

Can we stop at Lake Como on the way?

Yes. Lake Como is on the Maloja route, and a lunch in Cernobbio or Tremezzo or a night on the lake before the mountain is an easy addition. The same driver continues.

Do the drivers speak English?

Yes, English and Italian as standard, German on the Engadin side. Arabic, Russian, French, Spanish and Mandarin speakers, and female drivers, are available with notice.

I am visiting from the United States. Anything I should know about the transfer?

Switzerland uses Swiss francs and the Engadin is expensive even by Alpine standards; our transfer is quoted in EUR with an indicative USD figure alongside. Your own security team cannot work in Italy or Switzerland, so a protected transfer uses our licensed driver. And after an overnight flight, three hours of hairpins are better slept through than driven.
