Can you hire an armed bodyguard in São Paulo?
Yes, and in Brazil it is an ordinary, regulated service rather than an exception. Private security here is governed by the 2024 Estatuto da Segurança Privada (Lei 14.967) and supervised by the Polícia Federal: only a company the Polícia Federal authorises may provide personal protection, the armed officer is a registered personal security officer (vigilante de segurança pessoal privada, VSPP) carrying a weapon registered to that company, and freelance or cooperative protection is prohibited outright. The law also puts a duty on the client: whoever contracts security must check the company's authorisation first. Is it legal?
Yes, through a company authorised by the Polícia Federal under Lei 14.967/2024, whose personal security officers are registered and carry company-registered weapons. A foreign bodyguard, or a Brazilian freelancer, cannot lawfully work armed here.
Do I actually need an armed officer?
Often, in São Paulo, an armed officer is the normal configuration rather than an escalation, because the risks that matter here, express kidnapping, robbery at traffic lights and ambush on a predictable route, are armed risks. For a quiet day between the hotel and one office, an armoured car with a security driver may be the better answer, and we say so. The brief decides, not the upsell.

How much notice we need

Shorter notice is looked at case by case, but under 48 hours is an urgency case with an additional fee and no guarantee of cover. Peak dates such as the Grand Prix and the year-end weeks are reserved earlier.

A level III-A armoured sedan or SUV with a security-trained driver removes most of the exposure on the Marginais, at traffic lights and at the kerb; the officer covers the doors, the walk and the room. For many visitors the car is the single most effective measure available.

When an armed officer is the right answer in São Paulo, and when it is not
São Paulo is not a dangerous city to visit in the way first-time visitors fear, and it is not a city to treat casually either. The risks that matter are specific: express kidnapping, where a victim is driven between cash machines for an hour; robbery of watches and phones at traffic lights and in slow traffic; and ambush on a route that someone has learnt because the principal takes it every morning. Those are armed risks, carried out by people who expect their target to be alone, and an armed officer from an authorised company is the proportionate answer for a recognisable principal, an executive whose movements are predictable, or a family living in the city.
