Tenerife, the flagship
The largest island carries the archipelago’s grandest register: Teide above the clouds, the estates of Abama and Bahía del Duque, the Santa Cruz Carnival and the whale strait toward La Gomera. Gran Canaria, the miniature continent
Half the world’s climates on one island: the dunes of Maspalomas rolling into the Atlantic, pine forests at two thousand metres, and Las Palmas with the archipelago’s most cosmopolitan life, from its old quarter of Vegueta to the marina where round-the-world crews winter. We arrange clifftop villas in the south, tables where the island’s chefs actually eat, rounds at Maspalomas and Anfi Tauro, and days that cross from beach to summit before lunch.
La Gomera, the island time forgot
Twenty minutes by helicopter from Tenerife and half a century away: ravines of ancient laurel forest, terraced valleys folding to the sea, and a silence so complete the islanders invented a whistled language, Silbo, to carry across it. Garajonay’s cloud forest is UNESCO heritage; the harbours still smell of salt and rope. We arrange private fincas above the valleys, forest walks with the island’s best guides, and lunches of watercress stew and palm honey in villages the road barely reaches.
Lanzarote, art on a lava field
César Manrique made an entire island his canvas: white villages against black volcanic plains, architecture folded into lava bubbles, and papas beaches with water the colour of the Caribbean. Timanfaya’s fire mountains, the vine craters of La Geria where malvasía grows in ash, and Jameos del Agua by night. We arrange villas behind Manrique walls, private tastings at the volcanic wineries, chartered days to the Papagayo coves, and the museums and ateliers opened quietly out of hours.
Fuerteventura, the endless beach
A hundred and fifty kilometres of sand: Sotavento’s tidal lagoons, Cofete’s wild crescent behind the mountains, and dunes at Corralejo that run gold to a turquoise sea. The island is Europe’s great wind-and-water arena, world-class kitesurfing, surfing and sailing, and its emptiness is its luxury. We arrange beachfront villas, private kite and surf coaching, 4x4 expeditions to Cofete with lunch waiting, and boat days to the islet of Lobos before the ferries arrive.
El Hierro, the edge of the map
The smallest and furthest island was once the end of the known world, and it still feels like a secret: natural lava pools filling with clear Atlantic swell, juniper trees bent horizontal by the wind, and La Restinga’s marine reserve, considered by many the finest diving in Spain. The island runs almost entirely on renewable energy and receives almost no one. We arrange the crossings, the island’s few exceptional houses, private diving in the reserve, and the rare pleasure of an island where nobody knows to look for you.
