Agadir is the easy arrival, and the mountains behind it are the reason to stay.
Agadir was rebuilt after the 1960 earthquake as a planned city, so it is wide, orderly and easy in a way no other Moroccan destination is: a long beach, a hotel strip, a marina, and an airport close enough that the transfer is not an event. Three hours from most of western Europe, reliably warm in winter, and genuinely straightforward with children.
The mistake is treating it as only a beach. Within an hour or two you have the surf coast at Taghazout, the palm gorges of Paradise Valley, the walled town of Taroudant, the argan country and the edge of the Anti-Atlas. The town is where you sleep well; the region is where the week actually happens. Send the dates and who is travelling.
Villas, staff and getting the house right
A large share of clients here take a villa rather than a hotel, usually above the bay or out toward the golf courses, and the difference between a good week and a mediocre one is decided at that booking. Pool orientation and shade matter more than photographs suggest in a place this sunny. Whether staff live in or arrive daily changes the feel of the house entirely. And distance from the beach is measured in traffic, not kilometres.
What we actually do is unglamorous and it is the job: match the house to the party rather than to the listing, arrange the staff and the provisioning before arrival, and put a driver against the house for the week so nobody is negotiating a taxi at nine in the morning with three children and a surfboard.
The excursions that make the week
This is where Agadir earns its keep, and where a good local operation shows. Taghazout and Tamraght for surf, with schools that range from excellent to careless. Paradise Valley, a palm gorge with pools in the Ida Ou Tanane hills, magnificent early and crowded by midday. Taroudant, a walled town inland that feels like Marrakech before Marrakech became Marrakech. The argan cooperatives, of which the genuine women-run ones are worth the visit and the roadside ones are not.
Beyond those, Souss-Massa national park for birds, the Anti-Atlas for a longer day, and the coast road north toward Essaouira. All of it is driving, and all of it is better started early. The single most useful instruction we give clients here is to leave before the tour buses, which is a scheduling decision rather than a luxury one.
Golf, and the sport the region is quietly good at
Agadir has a real golf offering, several courses in and around the city on the plain behind the bay, and a climate that makes winter play genuinely pleasant rather than merely possible. It is one of the reasons the destination holds up for a repeat visit when the beach alone would not.
The concierge work here is ordinary and worth having: tee times at the courses that suit the group rather than the one nearest the hotel, transport arranged so the round is not bracketed by two taxi negotiations, and clubs and buggies sorted in advance. For a mixed party it also means planning the non-golf half of those days rather than leaving it to chance.
The beach, the wind and the water
The Atlantic here is cold, honest and often lively, and Agadir bay is sheltered enough to be a proper swimming beach while the coast either side is a surf and kite coast. That is the actual character of the place and it decides what a good day looks like.
Practically: use a school or a licensed operator rather than improvising with rented kit, watch children closely where there is real surf, and take the wind seriously when planning anything on the water. Beach clubs along the bay handle the comfortable end of this well. Any advice about Agadir that talks only about restaurants and ignores the ocean has misread the destination.
Public figures, filming and privacy in Morocco
Morocco has hosted film production, fashion shoots and recognisable guests for decades, and it is relaxed about it in a way that helps. There is no paparazzi industry here of the kind that exists on the Mediterranean. The exposure comes from other guests and from how photogenic the country is: a client in a medina lane is in somebody else’s photograph whether or not they were the subject.
Privacy is bought with choices rather than with visible officers. Where the house sits and how it is entered. Off-peak timing at the obvious places. A guide who can move a group out of a lane rather than through it. And an explicit understanding with staff about what is not posted. Where the profile justifies an officer, he dresses for the setting and moves with the group instead of behind it.
Onward: Essaouira, Marrakech and the south
Agadir works well as one half of a trip. Essaouira is up the coast, Marrakech is a few hours north-east through the Argana pass, Taroudant is close inland, and the road south runs toward the Anti-Atlas and eventually the desert. Al Massira also takes direct flights from a lot of Europe, which makes it a sensible entry or exit point rather than only a destination.

Concierge, destination management or fixer?
Concierge, destination management and fixer describe three different things and clients often ask for one meaning another. A concierge holds the relationship and the diary. A destination manager runs the ground operation: cars, guides, houses, permits and the order things happen in. A fixer solves one problem on one day and disappears.
In Morocco the second is what most trips actually need, because the country is not difficult so much as it is sequential. The riad is reached on foot, the desert camp needs a vehicle that can get there, the guide has to be licensed to be useful, and the drive between two cities is half a day. Somebody has to hold that chain, and it is not the hotel.
