Hiring a bodyguard in India, answered.

Yes, and the framework is clear: private security agencies are licensed under the Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act 2005, and the licence is issued state by state. That single fact shapes every serious itinerary here, because a country programme touching Mumbai, Delhi, Rajasthan and Goa is a compliance question in four jurisdictions rather than one. We hold that together as a single plan with one point of contact, and we never source an unlicensed officer to fill a date. Send your dates and route and you receive a clear proposal with a final rate, with no obligation.

Straight Answers

What people ask before enquiring.

Legality

Is it legal?

Yes, through an agency licensed under PSARA 2005 by the controlling authority of the state you are in. Officers are trained and their antecedents verified. Unlicensed arrangements are unlawful.

Cost

What it costs

From USD 900 per day (the EUR 850 market base) for one officer, shaped by the city, the profile and the vehicle. Multi-city routes are quoted as one programme, not as separate days.

Speed

How fast

Plan on seven days. Vetting the brief, releasing the right officer and completing the advance work takes that long. Under 48 hours means additional fees and no guarantee of cover. Armed cover requires a minimum 30-day lead time for authorisation and may be refused.

Weapons

Armed or unarmed

Armed private security exists in India but is tightly controlled under the Arms Act and licensed at agency level. Most visitor programmes are properly unarmed and low profile, and that is what we usually recommend.

Coverage

Where we cover

Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and Kolkata; Jaipur, Udaipur and Jodhpur in Rajasthan; Goa and Kerala; and the wedding and festival circuits between them.

People

Who you get

Vetted officers from PSARA-licensed agencies, many with army or police service, working in English and Hindi with regional languages locally, and female and Russian-speaking officers on request.

The Case for One Programme

India is a federal country, and protection is licensed that way.

PSARA licences are granted by state controlling authorities, which means an agency lawfully operating in Maharashtra is not automatically lawful in Rajasthan or Karnataka. A principal moving between four states in ten days needs a compliant provider in each of them, briefed to the same standard and coordinated so that the handovers do not become the weak point. Assembling that from separate local bookings is how visitors end up with an excellent officer in one city and an unlicensed one in the next.

We hold it as a single programme: one brief, one written plan, one named contact, licensed agencies in each state, and the joins planned as events in their own right. A named officer completes each leg rather than handing you to a stranger at a terminal door, luggage is counted at every stage, and the receiving team is briefed before the aircraft lands.

The National Picture

What protection in India is actually for.

Crowds

Density, not danger

The defining feature of Indian travel is the sheer number of people. Crowd management, pace and access are what an officer actually does here, far more than confronting any threat.

Traffic

The road is the real risk

Road conditions and driving standards make traffic the largest physical risk to a visitor by a wide margin. The driver and the vehicle are safety decisions, not comfort ones.

Business

Corporate and investor travel

Mumbai for finance, Delhi for government and policy, Bengaluru and Hyderabad for technology. Tight schedules in cities where an hour of traffic can remove a meeting.

Weddings

The wedding season

Indian weddings are among the largest private events in the world, with hundreds of guests, serious jewellery and multi-day programmes across several venues.

Public

Recognisable principals

India has an enormous, energetic public culture. A recognisable face attracts genuine crowds quickly, and the discipline is anticipation rather than reaction.

Family

Families and heritage travel

Palaces, forts and temples with uneven ground, steep steps, heat and crowds. The value is a calm perimeter and a pace set by the slowest member of the party.

01 —

Mumbai: finance, film and the coastal city

Mumbai is the financial capital, the centre of the film industry and the densest major city in the country. Business runs from Nariman Point and Bandra Kurla Complex, the residential south holds the older addresses, and the distances that look short on a map become long in the evening peak. It is also the city where a recognisable principal is most likely to be recognised, because the public interest in film and business figures here is genuine and immediate.

The city has its own page covering the districts, the airport, the hotels and the coastal routes: bodyguard in Mumbai. In outline, Mumbai programmes are built around timing and access: departures ahead of the peak, vehicles held where they can legally wait, and arrival points varied across a stay so that a pattern does not form.

02 —

Delhi NCR: government, corporate and the winter air

Delhi and the wider National Capital Region combine the seat of government, the diplomatic community, a large corporate presence in Gurugram and Noida, and a heritage circuit that visitors reliably underestimate. Movement between the city and the satellite towns is the practical challenge, official movements close roads without notice, and the winter air quality is a genuine health consideration rather than an inconvenience for anyone with a respiratory condition.

Delhi is covered in detail on bodyguard in New Delhi. The capital is also the usual base for the Golden Triangle to Agra and Jaipur, which is a long road day that rewards an early start and punishes an optimistic schedule.

03 —

Bengaluru, Hyderabad and the technology corridor

The southern technology cities are where a growing share of corporate travel now lands: campuses, investor meetings, research centres and the executive traffic that follows them. Both cities are more relaxed than Mumbai or Delhi in tone, and both have traffic that is worse than visitors expect, with campus districts sitting well outside the centre and journey times that vary enormously by hour.

Protection here is quiet by nature. Business dress, unmarked vehicles, drivers who know the corridor and not just the city, meetings covered from outside the room, and complete discretion about who was met and when. For visitors arriving by private aircraft, both cities have workable general aviation arrangements that shorten the day considerably.

04 —

Rajasthan: palaces, forts and the heat

Udaipur, Jaipur and Jodhpur carry the palace hotels that bring most luxury travellers to India in the first place, and they are genuinely wonderful. They are also demanding: forts with long climbs and uneven stone, old cities with lanes too narrow for a car, markets that are crowded and insistent, and heat that between March and June turns a midday visit into a poor idea.

We plan Rajasthan around the clock rather than the map: sites early or late, vehicles held at the edge of the old cities with walking legs agreed in advance, a guide who knows which entrance is usable at which hour, and water and shade carried rather than assumed. Udaipur in particular is a lake city where arriving by boat is sometimes both the better experience and the simpler logistics.

05 —

The wedding season, and what it actually involves

An Indian wedding is one of the largest private events in the world: several days, multiple venues, guest lists that run into the hundreds or beyond, choreographed arrivals, and genuinely valuable jewellery moving between residences, hotels and halls. Add a photography culture and social media, and a family that values privacy can find its arrangements circulating before the last night has finished.

We plan these as events rather than staffing them as buildings: guest flow and arrival windows, vehicle staging at venues never designed for that volume, a discreet arrangement for jewellery and gifts, coordination with the venue's own security and with the wedding planner, and a clear line on photography and drones. The measure of success is that the family remembers the evening and not the logistics. Where the wedding is the reason for the trip, our destination wedding planning covers the wider programme.

06 —

Driving in India, and why the vehicle matters

Traffic is the largest physical risk to a visitor in India, ahead of anything criminal, and it is the part of the plan that most itineraries treat casually. Road conditions vary enormously, lane discipline is fluid, two-wheelers occupy every gap, and intercity driving after dark is a genuinely different proposition from the same road in daylight. A hotel car and a professional security driver are not the same product.

We use maintained vehicles from providers we know, drivers who run the specific routes regularly, and schedules built on realistic timings rather than distances. Intercity legs are planned to finish before dark wherever the itinerary allows, doors stay locked and valuables out of sight in stopped traffic, and route alternatives are agreed before departure rather than negotiated at a closed junction.

07 —

Airports, private aviation and internal legs

India's distances make domestic aviation the backbone of any multi-city programme, and the main airports are modern and efficient by any standard. The friction is on either side of the flight: arrivals halls that are busy and public, kerbside areas that are strictly controlled, and city transfers that can take longer than the flight itself. Private and business aviation is well established at the major cities and transforms a tight schedule when it is available.

We meet arrivals inside where the terminal permits it, hold vehicles at agreed points rather than in the general rank, count luggage before anyone moves, and plan departures backwards from the security queue rather than the departure time. Every internal leg is met by a named officer at the far end, which is the single most effective way to keep a multi-city programme from unravelling.

08 —

Hotels, palace stays and residences

India's best hotels operate genuinely serious perimeter security, with vehicle checks at the gate, scanners at the entrance and controlled lobbies, a standard that has been the norm in the country's luxury properties for many years. That handles a great deal before we arrive. The remaining work is the arrangement: room position relative to lifts and service corridors, a procedure for visitors and deliveries, a conversation with the duty manager before arrival, and discretion about who is told the principal is in residence.

Palace hotels add their own texture, since parts of many are open to visitors or events while guests are in residence, and the boundary between the two needs to be understood rather than assumed. For private residences and rented villas, we survey before arrival and recommend the two or three changes that genuinely matter for the length of the stay.

09 —

How an Indian detail is actually run

One officer for most principals, in business dress, with a security driver and a maintained vehicle, and a second officer where the venue, the crowd or the event genuinely justifies it. The officer arrives before you, walks the addresses, agrees the stopping points with the driver, and works ahead through crowds and behind through doors. In a country this public, most of the skill is in reading a crowd early rather than in managing it late.

Where armed cover is genuinely warranted, it is arranged through the licensed agency under the Arms Act framework with the authorisation lead time built into the plan rather than promised against it. A named supervisor is accountable for the whole engagement, and NDA cover extends to the officers on the ground rather than only to the contract.

Indian Legal Framework

Why protection in India must be licensed, state by state.

Private security in India is governed by the Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act 2005, known as PSARA. Agencies must hold a licence issued by the controlling authority of the state in which they operate, must verify the antecedents of the personnel they employ, and must provide prescribed training. Because licensing is at state level, an agency lawfully operating in one state is not automatically authorised in the next, which is precisely why a multi-state itinerary is a compliance exercise as much as a logistics one. Armed private security is separately controlled under the Arms Act 1959 and is tightly restricted.

Two further points matter to visitors. A protection officer you employ abroad cannot lawfully perform a protective role in India; he may travel with you as a member of your party, and we will brief him alongside the licensed team. And the police protection categories that appear in the Indian press, assigned to individuals following a state threat assessment, are a government provision and cannot be purchased privately by anyone, however they are described. Algoz coordinates PSARA-licensed agencies only. See how our close protection works, compare jurisdictions on bodyguard laws by country, or plan the wider stay through luxury concierge in India.

When to Hire

Seasons, and the moments that call for cover.

October to March is the main season across most of the country: comfortable in the north and centre, and the window in which the wedding circuit, the festival calendar and the luxury travel season all land at once. April to June is severe heat in the north and centre, which turns midday sightseeing into a poor idea. June to September is the south-west monsoon, heaviest on the west coast and in Mumbai, where flooding disrupts road movement for days at a time, while the north-east monsoon affects the south-east coast later in the year.

Four situations reliably justify a detail. Multi-city and multi-state routes, because the licensing and the handovers both need holding together. Weddings and large family events, for guest flow, staging and jewellery. Festival travel around Diwali, Holi and the major pilgrimages, when crowd density reaches a scale most visitors have never experienced. And corporate travel on tight schedules, where the value is simply arriving on time, repeatedly, in cities where traffic decides everything.

For Executive & Personal Assistants

The answers you actually need before you book.

Vetting

How officers are selected

Every officer comes from a PSARA-licensed agency we have engaged before and kept. Licence verified against the state, antecedents and training checked, references taken, and a named supervisor accountable for the duration.

Compliance

Licensing follows the state

A multi-state route needs a licensed provider in each state. Send the full itinerary rather than the first city, so that the compliance picture is built once rather than patched together en route.

Confirmation

What you get in writing

The officer profile and languages, whether cover is armed or unarmed, the vehicles and drivers, the covered hours, the itinerary as briefed, a named Algoz contact, the rate and exclusions, and the change terms.

Changes

When the itinerary moves

Timing changes and venue swaps within the covered day are absorbed by the same contact. Added days, extra officers, a new state or armed cover are re-quoted and agreed before they run.

Discretion

NDA and the principal name

NDA cover is standard and extends to the officers on the ground. Where you prefer it, the principal is briefed to the team by role rather than by name, and the itinerary is treated as confidential information.

Requests

Language, gender and payment

English and Hindi as standard with regional languages locally, Russian on request, and female officers for family, residence and proximity work. Payment terms are in the confirmation, in one currency.

Excellence, Discreetly Delivered

"A country is not a series of bookings. It is one plan, held by one person, from the arrivals hall to the last transfer."

What protection in India costs.

Licensed close protection in India starts from USD 900 per day (the EUR 850 market base) for one officer covering a single principal on a twelve-hour day, with the final rate shaped by the city, the profile and the programme, and confirmed on enquiry with no obligation. A security driver with an executive vehicle is quoted separately and is the most useful addition in every Indian city, because traffic decides more of the day than anything else. Above the base rate: specialist profiles, female officers, a second officer or a full team for weddings and events, armed cover where genuinely warranted, and the October to March peak.

Multi-city and multi-state routes are quoted as one programme rather than as a stack of separate days, because the state-by-state licensing, the internal flights, the handovers and the officer positioning are part of both the cost and the value. Wedding and event cover is quoted as an event rather than as a daily rate. Further reading: what a bodyguard costs and luxury concierge in India.

Good to Know

Bodyguard in India - Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a bodyguard cost in India?

Licensed close protection in India starts from USD 900 per day (the EUR 850 market base) for one officer covering a single principal on a twelve-hour day. A security driver with an executive vehicle is quoted separately and is the most useful addition in every Indian city, because traffic decides more of the day than anything else does. Specialist profiles, female officers, a second officer or a full team for weddings and events, armed cover where genuinely warranted, and the October to March peak season all sit above the base rate. Multi-city routes are quoted as one programme, and the final rate is confirmed on enquiry with no obligation.

Is it legal to hire a bodyguard in India?

Yes, through an agency licensed under the Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act 2005, known as PSARA. The licence is issued by the controlling authority of the state in which the agency operates, and the agency must verify its personnel's antecedents and provide the prescribed training. Because licensing is at state level, an agency lawfully operating in Maharashtra is not automatically authorised in Rajasthan or Karnataka, which is why a multi-state itinerary needs a compliant provider in each state rather than one national arrangement.

Can bodyguards be armed in India?

Armed private security exists in India but is tightly controlled under the Arms Act 1959 and licensed at agency level rather than granted to an individual officer for a trip. For the great majority of visitor programmes it is neither necessary nor appropriate, and we recommend unarmed, low-profile cover unless the profile or the circumstances genuinely change the picture. Where armed cover is warranted, it is arranged through the licensed agency and requires a minimum 30-day lead time for authorisation, which may be refused.

Can I buy the police protection I read about in the Indian press?

No, and it is worth being clear about this because the terminology causes real confusion. The categories assigned to public figures in India follow a state threat assessment and are a government provision. They cannot be purchased privately by anyone, whatever a provider may imply. What can be arranged lawfully is professional close protection through a PSARA-licensed agency, which is a different thing and, for a visiting principal, the appropriate one.

Which cities and regions do you cover?

Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and Kolkata; Jaipur, Udaipur and Jodhpur across Rajasthan; Goa and Kerala; and the wedding and festival circuits that connect them. Mumbai and New Delhi have their own detailed pages. A typical programme strings several of these together, and we quote it as one plan with one point of contact rather than as separate city bookings, precisely because the state-by-state licensing and the handovers are where an assembled itinerary fails.

Is India safe for a luxury traveller or a family?

For prepared visitors, yes, and the honest risk list is not the one most people expect. Road traffic is the largest physical risk by a wide margin. After that come crowd density at sites and events, petty theft and distraction scams in tourist areas, heat and hygiene, and air quality in the northern winter, which is a genuine health issue for anyone with a respiratory condition. Violent crime against foreign visitors is rare. A close protection officer and a security driver remove most of this quietly, which is why family programmes are built around pace and access rather than around threat.

How quickly can you mobilise in India?

We ask for at least seven days. That is the honest lead time: the brief has to be vetted, the right officer assigned and released from other commitments, and the advance work on routes, venues and access actually done. Shorter notice is looked at case by case, but anything under 48 hours is an urgency case, carries additional fees and is not guaranteed. No one can put a licensed officer in place in 24 hours. Send your dates as early as you have them. Smaller cities and the Rajasthan circuit need a little longer because the officer travels to you. The wedding and festival season from October to March is the genuine constraint, when good officers and vehicles are committed weeks ahead. Armed cover always requires a minimum 30-day lead time and may be refused.

Can one programme cover several states in one trip?

Yes, and that is exactly what a country programme is for. Because PSARA licences are issued state by state, a multi-state route needs a compliant licensed provider in each state, coordinated to one standard. You receive one brief, one written plan and one named contact, with local officers in each state rather than one officer flown around the country at your expense. The handovers are planned as events in their own right, with a named officer completing each leg and the receiving team briefed before the aircraft lands.

We are attending or hosting an Indian wedding. Can you cover it?

Yes, and it is one of the largest categories of work we do in the country. Indian weddings run for several days across multiple venues, with guest lists in the hundreds, choreographed arrivals and genuinely valuable jewellery moving between residences, hotels and halls. We plan guest flow and arrival windows, vehicle staging at venues never designed for that volume, a discreet arrangement for jewellery and gifts, coordination with the venue security and the wedding planner, and a clear line on photography and drones. It is planned as an event, not staffed as a building.

Do you provide security drivers as well as officers?

Yes, and in India the driver carries an unusual share of the safety load. Road conditions and driving standards make traffic the largest physical risk to a visitor, and a hotel car with a general driver is not the same product as a maintained vehicle with a professional security driver who runs your specific routes. We plan intercity legs to finish before dark wherever the itinerary allows, keep doors locked and valuables out of sight in stopped traffic, and agree route alternatives before departure.

Do you have female or Russian-speaking officers in India?

Yes to both, on request and with notice. Female close protection officers are available for family details, residence and hotel work, shopping, school runs, wedding events and any situation where a principal prefers a female officer in close proximity, and demand for them in India is high enough that notice genuinely matters. Officers work in English and Hindi as standard with regional languages locally, and Russian-speaking officers are available in the main cities with advance notice.

Can my own bodyguard travel with me to India?

He may travel as a member of your party, but he cannot lawfully perform a protective role in India, where the work belongs to a PSARA-licensed agency. In practice this arrangement works well when it is planned: your own officer knows the principal and the household, the Indian team knows the licensing, the cities, the traffic and the crowds, and we brief both together before the first movement so that there is one plan rather than two overlapping ones.

I am an executive assistant booking for a principal. How does that work?

You send one brief with the dates, the party, the full route across every state and any security requirements, and you receive one written confirmation covering the officer profile and languages, whether cover is armed or unarmed, the vehicles and drivers, the covered hours, the itinerary as briefed, the named Algoz contact with a direct line, the rate and exclusions, and the change and cancellation terms. Send the whole route rather than the first city, because the licensing picture is built from it. NDA cover is standard.

When is the best time of year to travel in India?

October to March is the main season across most of the country, comfortable in the north and centre, and the window in which the wedding circuit, the festival calendar and the luxury travel season all arrive together, so it books out early. April to June brings severe heat to the north and centre. June to September is the south-west monsoon, heaviest on the west coast and in Mumbai, where flooding can disrupt road movement for days. Diwali, Holi and the major pilgrimages produce crowd densities most visitors have never experienced, and we plan around them explicitly.
